Introducing P&O Cruises' latest ship: Iona

Date Posted: 24 May 2018

Known in the industry as Project Gala, plans for P&O Cruises’ 2020 ship are being released all the time, and we’re getting more and more excited about what’s instore. It’s thought to be the cruise lines’ most ambitious vessel yet, and will combine the many firm British favourites with some fantastic new additions.

Onboard Features

The ship will be built to accommodate 5,200 guests, and will offer some brilliant features from dining choices and entertainment venues to an outstanding atrium. It will boast;

• 4 swimming pools including one inside

• 16 whirlpools

• 13 entertainment venues including some adult-only

• 15 restaurants including 8 speciality

• 10 bars and pubs

P&O Cruises have collaborated with some of the world’s best design and hospitality professionals to create these wonderful facilities, in addition to the following highly anticipated new features;

The Atrium – as well as a commanding grand staircase and gallery, the atrium is sure to be a centre of socialising and enjoyment due to the vast glass windows spanning over three decks. These will enable the area to be shrouded in bright, natural light.

The Dome – this original aspect of the ship is set to be a favourite among guests. It’s an outdoor pool with retractable stage, with an overhead roof allowing for its use in all weathers. It will be used for dining and entertainment as well as daytime activities.

The Lanai Deck – a great space for al fresco dining, relaxing, and an evening stroll, at half a mile long the Lanai Deck offers plenty for all guests to enjoy.

The Name

After more than 30,000 entries for suggested names, P&O Cruises had Stephen Mulhern announce the name of their new ship at 4pm on Thursday 24th May. She will be, Iona. The much-anticipated secret was finally released at the beautiful and apt location of Scotland's Isle of Iona.

Before now there has been much speculation over what it could be. Popular guesses have included Gala, Olympia, and of course, Shippy Mc Ship Face! Other ideas were Diana, Celestia, Aurelia, Adventurer, Phoenix, and Victoria. Which is your favourite?
