The cruise industry is experiencing huge growth. According to the latest CLIA (Cruise Line International Association) report, the global cruise market grew by 7.7% in 2025, with further growth expected in 2026.
According to CLIA, over 37 million people went on an ocean cruise in 2025, the highest figure to date. With increasing demand for the industry, passengers around the world are continually searching to broaden their horizons through cruise travel, with more choices and itineraries than ever before.
Whether you’re a cruise fanatic or looking to set sail for the first time, we have created the ultimate Cruise Calendar, highlighting the best times of the year for warm weather, cooler weather and availability.
What to consider when booking a cruise
Iglu Cruise’s Chief Commercial Officer, Dave Mills, offered some insight:
“There are many factors to consider when embarking on a cruise, such as the destinations, the weather and the price. Sunshine and pampering might be more important to some travellers, whilst others may focus on dining or the best deals. Some might be searching for family-friendly options, with plenty of on-board activities. Others might want a luxury cruise, where they can sit back and relax. Our Cruise Calendar can help travellers find what they are searching for.”

Hotcations

Cruises to warmer climates are extremely popular, with passengers chasing the sun to enjoy life at sea. Many travellers see warm weather as one of the biggest advantages of a cruise holiday itself. Getting to enjoy various aspects of the ship, such as the sundeck, swimming pools and outdoor areas, is also more appealing when the weather is warmer.
During peak summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, destinations such as the Mediterranean, North America, Hawaii, Northwest Africa, and the Canary Islands offer warm weather, sunshine, and longer daylight hours from June to September.
During winter months (December to February), some travellers enjoy sailing further afield to escape the cold weather in the UK. Destinations near the equator or in the Southern Hemisphere enjoy warm weather in winter. These include the Caribbean, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, Australasia, South America and the Galapagos Islands.

“There are plenty of incredible destinations to explore if you’re searching for a cruise in a warm climate to soak up some sun and escape gloomy weather back home. Year after year, we experience huge demand for cruises in the Mediterranean during the peak summer months, with high temperatures and sunshine drawing people to southern Europe. During the UK winter, the Caribbean, the Canary Islands or Southeast Asia are popular as travellers search for tropical destinations to escape the cold. The interesting thing about cruising is it’s quite possible to enjoy different climates all on one trip - so careful packing is essential”
Coolcations

Coolcations have become a popular travel trend in recent years, with some travellers seeking cooler climates to escape the heat. Record-breaking temperatures and intense heatwaves across warmer destinations, such as the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, mean some travellers are seeking a different type of cruise experience.
Destinations that typically have cooler climates for most of the year, such as the Norwegian Fjords and Alaska, offer dramatic landscapes you won’t see elsewhere, including mountains, glaciers, and fjords. This unique aspect of cruising to a cooler climate is drawing in a new generation of travellers.
Some destinations with warmer climates do offer cooler weather at certain times of the year. In the Mediterranean, especially in eastern Spain and northern Italy, temperatures will cool in the winter months, particularly in December and January. This is a great option for those looking to experience a Mediterranean cruise without the heat.
On the other side of the hemisphere, Australasia experiences cooler temperatures from May to August. New Zealand, especially the South Island, offers cool temperatures, plus stunning views. This is a great option for those looking to travel further afield for a cooler cruise.
Dave Mills said:
“We’re seeing more and more customers searching specifically for cooler cruises. Not only do these destinations provide an escape from extreme heat, but they also offer some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The Norwegian Fjords are a firm favourite, offering cooler temperatures from September to April. Better yet, travellers can visit Norway from the UK, skipping the airport altogether. Other popular coolcation destinations include Alaska and Canada.”
Cruise Availability

Some destinations offer cruise sailings year-round, whilst others sail only during a specific season. There are a variety of factors that explain why some destinations are only available for certain periods, such as weather conditions, passenger demand, and port regulations.
Popular destinations such as the Mediterranean are available year-round. Demand for these destinations remains steady throughout the year, with regular flights to popular departure ports such as Barcelona, Rome, or Athens. No-fly cruise options are also available to the Mediterranean year-round, making it accessible for passengers looking to depart from the UK.
Some destinations, such as Alaska, only offer sailings at certain times of the year. Travellers can cruise to Alaska from September to May. This is mainly due to extreme winter weather, particularly icy conditions, which make it difficult for cruise ships to sail. Other destinations, such as the Panama Canal, avoid the summer months. This is because cruise ships have already repositioned to other destinations for the season.
Dave Mills said:
“The cruise season is split into three categories. High season is when we see the most demand, usually for popular destinations and family cabins during certain times of the year. Shoulder season is the transition between the busy period and the quieter times. Low season typically offers the most affordable fares and lowest deposits. Depending on your preference, it’s important to plan ahead to make sure you secure a cabin on your preferred sailing - these days prices generally run low to high, so booking early, regardless of season, is the best bet.”
Best destination for your cruise
With plenty of incredible destinations to visit, it might be easier to ask yourself which type of cruise you’re searching for. Below is our breakdown of expert advice from Dave Mills.
Family-friendly cruises
Dave said: “There are plenty of incredible destinations and cruise lines that cater for families. The Mediterranean is popular for families looking to stay within Europe, with no-fly options also available from the UK. The summer months see huge demand for the Mediterranean, so booking early is advised. North America is another popular destination, with Orlando being a highlight. Our cruise and stay options also allow families to spend up to 7 nights on land before embarking on their cruise, visiting Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. Exploring together as a family is a wonderful experience so don’t overlook Alaska or a cruise to the Arctic Circle for equally unforgettable memories ”
Luxury cruises
Dave said: “If you’re searching for a luxury cruise or a smaller ship experience, there are many destinations to consider. The Caribbean is a popular choice, especially during the UK winter. Travellers can visit incredible islands such as Antigua, Grenada and Barbados, which offer white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. You can experience these beautiful destinations whilst sailing on board a luxury cruise line, enjoying five-star dining and incredible service, with more included in the fare and some also including your shore experiences too.”
Adults-only cruises
Dave said: “Adult-only cruises offer a relaxed, child-free atmosphere catered to those over 18. With itineraries all over the world, the choice is extremely varied. The Norwegian Fjords and Northern Europe are standout destinations for those seeking dramatic landscapes, quiet viewing decks, and peaceful scenic sailings. With more of the ship spaces dedicated to adults, you often have a greater choice of dining and bars. Destination-wise, Alaska offers something a great taster of an expedition experience, with exciting shore excursions and amazing whale watching opportunities.”
Solo cruises
Dave said: “We’re seeing increasing demand for solo cruises, and as a result, more destinations and unique itineraries are available for solo passengers throughout the year. One of the main advantages of a solo cruise is that passengers can pick the exact location they wish to visit, relying only on themselves and their interests rather than catering to a group booking. Popular destinations include the Mediterranean, Mexico and Asia. As a rule, for the lowest single supplements, booking early is essential ”
Short break cruises
Dave said: “A short break is a great way to experience a cruise for the first time, or enjoy a quick getaway trip. Many of our passengers enjoy sailing from the UK, including Southampton, Newcastle and Liverpool. These itineraries visit many wonderful destinations, including Ireland, France and the Netherlands. Fly cruise options are also available, with many passengers embarking from popular European ports such as Barcelona and Athens, for a quick mini break.”
