If you’re browsing Iglu Cruise’s latest cruise deals and wondering what it’s like to embark on an exciting Norwegian Fjords cruise with Hurtigruten, you should check out this cruise review from Alex, Iglu Cruise’s Head of Content Operations. Recently, he visited Bergen and Oslo with Hurtigruten, spending 3 nights aboard MS Trollfjord. Below, he's shared his expert opinion on this incredible experience, along with insider tips to keep in mind when you embark on an adventure like this yourself.
What was your first impression of MS Trollfjord?
The welcome from the staff was warm and friendly. It didn't take long to get checked in and head to our cabins. The communal areas are bright and feel spacious, considering it isn't a large ship. I particularly liked the restaurant's style. Plus, the traditional Norwegian blankets on the bed were so nice, I wanted to buy one to take home.
What destinations did you visit during your cruise?
Bergen to Oslo on a repositioning cruise.
Who would you recommend this ship to?
Someone who wants to experience the Northern Lights and/or Norwegian Fjords in the most authentically Norwegian way possible.
Did you have a chance to see multiple cabin types? What were they like, and what’s one insider tip you’d like to share?
I would recommend my Polar Outside Upper Deck cabin. It was spacious, had a large porthole window and the toastiest underfloor heating in the bathroom I've ever tried!

Did your accommodation have enough storage space for a full 7-night cruise?
Yes, storage was ample - even for large puffy winter jackets, you'd be fine.
How was the noise inside your accommodation? Are there any areas you advise avoiding for those selecting their own cabin?
I could hear a little bit of noise from the bar, but only faintly. I still had a great night's sleep.
If you could only eat in one complimentary restaurant for the whole trip, which one would you choose, and what’s one must-try dish you recommend?
I liked all three restaurants, but would recommend the breakfast and lunch buffets at Flora the most. The selection on offer is wonderful - I could have tried something new every day. The food is fresh and interesting. I particularly liked the cloudberry jam and the pickled beetroot! I was impressed that there were lots of vegan options on offer too - not always easy on a cruise.

What about the speciality dining on MS Trollfjord?
We ate at Røst Restaurant on the last night. The tasting menu was exquisite and adventurous. The waitress explained each dish to us and how it paired with the wine/spirits being served. The head chef even came over to say hello at one point - we felt honoured by his attention!
If you had a drinks package, would you recommend it?
Yes, and yes.
What was the most surprising or under-the-radar activity that a first-time cruiser would miss?
Stargazing and/or aurora hunting on the top deck. The deck is big and spacious, standing up there with a rum hot chocolate looking for stars was magical.
What was the vibe of the pool deck onboard?
There isn't a pool on MS Trollfjord.

You may not find a pool on MS Trollfjord, but views like this more than make up for that
Did you check out the kids’ facilities available onboard? What were the highlights?
This cruise ship didn’t feature any facilities specifically aimed at younger cruisers.
Which destination was the biggest surprise, and why?
Oslo was so nice! There were floating saunas everywhere, and the modern buildings near the dock are a sight to behold. Climbing up the opera house is well worth the effort for the views (and the steps!).

For those who prefer to explore independently, what’s the best thing to do within walking distance of the dock at your favourite destination?
Go for a sauna and jump in the water to cool off. The woodsmoke in the air was a wonderful welcome to Oslo.
What was disembarking like?
Very easy - beep your card and hop off in town.
Compared to other cruise experiences, what makes this one stand out?
The ship is small enough to enter the narrow fjords - this is reason enough to book your cruise.
What’s one bit of advice you would give someone booking this exact cruise that they won’t find in a brochure?
There are self-service saunas at many ports in Norway. You book them in advance on their websites, so get it booked in plenty of time before you arrive to avoid waiting or missing out.
