Why rest is important

A good night's sleep is vital for our physical and mental well-being. When we reach deep sleep, our bodies reset. Our blood pressure lowers, and brain activity calms down.

This recovery time gives you real benefits when you wake. It boosts your heart health, immune system and mind. Without the right environment, it's easy to miss out on the deep rest you need.

What makes a destination an ideal sleep sanctuary?

1. Air Quality: Low air quality can prevent deep sleep, increase nighttime awakenings and worsen breathing problems.

2. Noise Levels: Keeping noise levels low helps prevent sudden increases in cortisol during light sleep.

3. Light Pollution: Reducing artificial light pollution allows natural melatonin production to peak without interruption.

4. Safety: High nighttime safety scores allow the nervous system to shift from high alert to deep rest.

5. Comfort: Creating a comfortable environment through soft sheets, climate control and suitable sleepwear will contribute to a better nights rest.

Sleepmaxxing on cruises

Dave Mills, Chief Commercial Officer at Iglu Cruise, says:

“An increasing number of travellers are looking for holidays that actively support their physical and mental wellbeing. Sleep tourism is not just a passing trend; it reflects a major shift in how people choose to recharge. Cruising aligns perfectly with this focus. Away from bright city lights and out on the open sea, travellers can enjoy dark skies, fresh air and the gentle rocking of the ship, all contributing to the ideal conditions for deep, restorative sleep."

Cruise lines are continually investing in the physical mechanics of sleep, specifically mattress, bed and sleepwear development. A standout example is Oceania Cruises signature Tranquillity Bed, often hailed as the most comfortable sleep setup at sea. The mattress proved such a hit with guests asking where they could buy it that the cruise line now sells the Oceania Bed Collection directly to consumers.

Methodology

The European Sleepmaxxing Index evaluates 40 major European travel destinations based on five equally weighted indicators (20% each):

  1. Air Quality: Concentration of fine particulate matter sourced from the European Environment Agency (EEA) and IQAir.
  2. Noise Pollution: Citywide nighttime acoustic disturbance levels sourced from EEA and Numbeo datasets.
  3. Light Pollution: Satellite-measured nighttime radiance and artificial light brightness sourced from NOAA VIIRS and NASA Earthdata.
  4. Safety: Perception of nighttime safety when walking alone, sourced from Eurostat and Numbeo.
  5. Luxury Hotel Density: Number of 4-star and 5-star hotels per 100,000 residents, calculated via Booking.com and Eurostat census metrics.
