It is a popular birding destination, with over 150 species, including puffins and uncommon Asian migrating birds. Things to do
WWII History
The Aleutian World War II National Historic Area Visitor Center is located at Dutch Harbor, which was an important military outpost for the United States during WWII. The center focuses on the Forgotten War and includes interactive displays such as a dramatic, immersive "bunker" experience that recreates the ambiance of the war years. Fort Schwatka, located on Ulakta Head on Mount Ballyhoo, contains bunkers that provide a stunning and eerie view into World War II's Aleutian Islands Campaign. As the highest coastal battery ever built in the United States (897 feet above sea level), the site features wrecked concrete gun emplacements, "elephant steel" tunnels, and breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea.
Cultural History
The Museum of the Aleutians is a fascinating cultural hub that provides an intimate look at over 9,000 years of Unangan (Aleut) history. The exhibits span indigenous culture, the Russian fur trade era (1770s), and the 1942 Japanese invasion. It showcases high-quality artefacts such as traditional hunting equipment, grass baskets, and commercial fishing displays.
Boat Tours
Boat trips in Dutch Harbour provide an intimate glimpse at the harsh Aleutian scenery and intense wildlife via smaller boats or private charters. Highlights include sightings of humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, puffins, sea otters, and bald eagles, as well as stunning views of volcanic landscapes known as America's "final frontier" and close-ups of the legendary Deadliest Catch commercial fishing fleet. Rain gear and thick layers are needed, especially in the summer, because the weather can be unpredictable.
