Boasting stunning European art deco-style architecture, a hangover from this region’s colonial past, Montevideo is home to an expansive beach promenade and a South American atmosphere to match. Here, you’ll find the Rambla, a riverfront avenue that’s one of the world’s longest continuous sidewalks – which just highlights how perfect Montevideo is if you’re looking to take a laid-back wander here. Beyond this, though, if you’re looking for a little more action, you’ll find a bustling marketplace in Mercado del Puerto, intriguing exhibitions in the Andes Museum and Museo El Juguetero (just two of the several incredible museums and galleries in Montevideo), and fantastic food everywhere you turn. With all the modern comforts of a capital city, but a relaxed atmosphere that lets you savour the little things, a visit to this metropolis is worth looking forward to.

Legislative Palace of Uruguay
A monumental example of neo-classical architecture in the heart of Montevideo, the Legislative Palace of Uruguay acts as the meeting place of the General Assembly of Uruguay, the seat of the legislative branch of the Uruguayan government, and a remarkable landmark to see when you visit. Built between 1904 and 1925, it was constructed to commemorate 100 years of Uruguayan independence.
Obelisk of Montevideo
Built in 1930 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Constitution of Uruguay as a homage to the original members of the General Assembly, this three-sided structure stretches 40 metres up and is flanked by three bronze structures representing Law, Liberty, and Force. In 1983, it was the site of Rio de Libertad – the nation’s largest demonstration ever, demanding an end to the civil-military dictatorship in place at the time.
Palacio Salvo
Standing 95 metres tall, this stunning structure takes advantage of eclectic architectural designs to deliver one of the most remarkable buildings in Montevideo. Built with the intention of being a hotel in 1928, it’s now a mixture of private residences and office spaces – though tours of the building are available at select times during the day.

Widely believed to be the most southerly point of South America for a long time, and a destination marking the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, Cape Horn is a stunning headland on Hornos Island – one of the larger landmasses in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago – known for unusual rock formations, tumultuous weather, and its significant role in maritime trading from the 1700s to the early 20th century. Initially discovered by Spanish explorers in 1526, and eventually first fully rounded by Dutch navigators for the East India Company in 1616 – who then named this destination Kaap Hoorn, after Hoorn in the Netherlands – Cape Horn is a rocky outlet steeped in maritime history. Navigating around Cape Horn was once a dangerous feat, with rough waters and intense winds making this trade route a valuable one – when navigated successfully, anyway. Rendered largely obsolete as a trade route by the Panama Canal, now Cape Horn represents a breathtaking scenic cruising experience you can enjoy without worrying about the treacherous sailing conditions.

Cape Horn Monument
A sculpture paying homage to the sailors who lost their lives attempting to navigate around Cape Horn, the Cape Horn monument stands along a lighthouse and the Stella Maris, a small Catholic chapel. It stands 24 feet tall on a hilltop roughly 165 feet above sea level.
Black-Browed Albatross Sightings
A highlight among the seabirds you can see when sailing around Cape Horn, black-browed albatrosses are among the most populous of its family – but no less impressive to see while at sea. With a wingspan of 200 cm to 240 cm and a natural lifespan of over 70 years, these bright white seabirds have a dark eyestripe and broad black edging to the underside of their wings.
Southern Rockhopper Penguin Spotting
A vulnerable penguin species often found in subantarctic waters like those surrounding Cape Horn, these are among the smallest species of its family; with breeding colonies around Cape Horn, you may spot some of these incredible animals during your sailing. They’re known for their bright yellow eyebrows, ending in long yellow plumes, and red eyes.

Nicknamed the “End of the World”, Ushuaia is a charming windswept city on the southernmost tip of South America and an important port of call for cruise adventures to Antarctica. In the heart of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, this port is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, boasting sensational sightseeing opportunities for everyone who travels here. Ushuaia is also home to a unique collection of museums and some fantastic food; so, while the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the region is a major highlight, this is one destination that will prove to be just as memorable as everything else on your itinerary.

Tierra del Fuego National Park
An expansive national park that protects nearly 70,000 hectares of land, the Tierra del Fuego National Park combines marine areas, forests, and mountains to create a truly fascinating place worth exploring if you have the time while visiting Ushuaia. Here, you’ll find everything from luscious woodland and tumbling waterfalls to dramatic mountains and serene lakes. Throughout, you’ll also find evidence of the Yámanas, the first inhabitants of these lands, which serves to remind everyone who spends some time here that this region has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. With so much to see, this is easily the best place to visit if you’re looking to switch off and embrace the great outdoors.
Museo del Fin del Mundo
If you want to learn more about the city of Ushuaia, Museo del fin del Mundo is the perfect place to go. A living heritage museum that explores the history and culture of Ushuaia and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the End of the World Museum (which is its name in English) is home to numerous exhibitions that explore the native history of this region, the local fauna and flora, the traditions and customs of the people here, and even some of the shipwrecks that have happened here over the centuries. Found in parts of the National Bank building and Old Government House, these impressive buildings only serve to highlight the importance of the museum and its contents.
Museo de la Ciudad
Also known as Casa Pena, this former private residence has served as the City Museum in Ushuaia since 2009; with an interesting selection of informative exhibits and historic items, this museum offers visitors a fantastic insight into what ordinary life was like in this city throughout the 20th century – which is when it was originally occupied by the Pena family.

Despite its relatively small population for such an important Chilean port, Coquimbo boasts a bustling cityscape with plenty to offer visitors. Lying in the shadow of the staggering Cruz del Tercer Milenio, an 83-metre tall concrete cross sitting atop El Vigía hill and one of the tallest monuments in South America, this city is home to a variety of cultural experiences, several stunning beaches, and more than a few incredible hiking routes – which lead to hilltops offering sensational sweeping views of the city and its surrounding mountainous landscape. Neighbouring La Serena, an equally incredible city with its own collection of impressive landmarks and attractions to explore, there’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to this port of call, for those looking for adventure and those looking to relax alike.

Playa La Herradura
This stunning white-sand beach in Coquimbo is the perfect place to spend an afternoon soaking up the South American sunshine. Looking out at the sheltered Bahia Herradura de Guayacan (Horseshoe Bay of Guayacan), the waters here are perfect for swimming and watersports alike. You’ll also be within walking distance of fantastic restaurants, welcoming bars, and plenty of shops; so, you won’t have to travel far to find whatever you might need to make your day at the beach even better.
La Serena Archaeological Museum
Offering an incredible insight into the history of the Coquimbo region and its indigenous peoples, La Serena Archaeological Museum (in La Serena, just a short distance from Coquimbo) is fascinating. Founded in 1943, this museum’s collections comprise over 14,000 items of the archaeological, ethnographical, and paleontological variety. It’s also home to an impressive monumental moai, a stone head from the Rapa Nui culture of Easter Island.
Faro Monumental de La Serena
Built circa 1951, this monumental lighthouse is a symbol of La Serena, standing as a testament to the rich maritime history of the region. Its unique design and bright exterior make it a popular tourist attraction, and the panoramic views from the top of the lighthouse tower here are unrivalled. Found along the stunning Playa El Faro beach, this landmark is a sight to behold from up-close or afar.

Fortaleza del Real Felipe
One of the few existing military fortifications in Peru and the largest military construction by the Spanish in the Americas, the Fortaleza del Real Felipe (Real Felipe Fortress) is an impressive 18th century castle that now houses the Peruvian Army Museum. Throughout history, it has played a pivotal role in both national and international events – with it being a major flashpoint of conflict during colonial power struggles in the 18th century, Peruvian separatist struggles against Spanish colonialism in the 19th century, and the decolonisation of the Americas – given that the loss of this military stronghold in Peru was among the dominos that led to Peruvian independence.
Callao Monumental Turismo historico
A colourful cultural hub in the heart of Callao, this district of the seaport city is home to an array of contemporary art galleries, boutique shopping, and restaurants; with so much culture to immerse yourself in here, and some fantastic authentic Peruvian food to enjoy, this area of Callao offers you an incredible insight into the arts and music that make this city – and indeed Peru as a whole – so special.
Metropolitan Cathedral of Lima
Initially constructed circa 1538, and then reconstructed and improved upon throughout the 18th century, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Lima is a staggering Roman Catholic Church in the heart of Lima; known for being where the Treasure of Lima was hidden in 1820, an infamous urban legend that is yet to be fully proven false despite the fact that no treasure has been found, this cathedral now plays host to a museum showcasing a collection of notable artworks from Lima’s colonial period.

A bustling port city that's situated on the central coast of Ecuador, Manta is home to a variety of popular bars, restaurants, a fish market, museums and a picturesque beach. Known for its tuna fishing history, whilst in Manta make sure to visit El Murcielago beach, head out to enjoy some watersports and the Cancebí Museum.

Just west of Panama City, at the Pacific Ocean entrance to the Panama Canal, Fuerte Amador is one of the most unique ports of call on any Americas cruise. Panama Viejo
An UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the suburbs of Panama City, Panama Viejo is the last remaining part of the original Panama City, the former capital of this nation and a settlement that was destroyed by Welsh privateer Henry Morgan in 1671. Home to several unique ruins, this historic site offers visitors an insight into Panama City during the 16th century and the tumultuous start to this city’s colonial period.
Biomuseo
A unique museum designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, his first design for Latin America, this modern attraction is focused fully on exploring the natural history of Panama – and the personal impact of humans on the environment, both Panamanian and otherwise. Located on the Amador Causeway, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of Panama City and the surrounding seascape from the grounds of this museum, and the bright exterior of Biomuseo is a sight to behold from afar too.
Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama City
Consecrated as a Roman Catholic Church in 1796, following over 100 years of construction, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama City was designed by military engineer Nicolas Rodriguez and boasts two white-plastered towers flanking an intricately designed Jesuit style façade. One of the most unique churches in Latin America, it’s a stone’s throw from Plaza de la Catedral and Plaza de la Independencia, both open areas where you’ll find interesting museums, restaurants, and more.

Joining the mighty Atlantic to the vast Pacific oceans from Colon on the west coast to Panama City to the east, the Panama Canal bridges the two worlds without having to traverse the infamous Cape of Good Hope around Chile by ships. The journey down through the canal and its impressive locks by cruise ship is a destination and unique cruise ship experience in itself.

Whilst stopping off on the Panama Canal, if you have the time, a trip to Casco Viejo is well worth the effort. Within the historic district of the city, it’s a designated World Heritage Site which was built in the late 17th century. With stunning architecture, restaurants, shops and more, this picturesque area is frequently listed as one of the top things to do whilst in Panama.
Ancon Hill
If you’re looking for breathtaking views out towards the city, head to Ancon Hill. spanning 199 metres, this impressive hill is a popular site to visit whilst in the area of Ancon or Panama City.

The capital of Grand Cayman, George Town is a popular stop off for those on a Caribbean cruise. National Museum
The Cayman Islands National Museum is located in the heart of George Town, within an old courthouse building on the popular Harbour Drive. Showcasing an array of exhibits, it's a must if you want to learn more about the history of the area whilst stopping off there.

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, at the vibrant Cayman Craft Market that offers souvenirs from an array of local artisans. The ultimate place to pick up Caymanian art and crafts, this popular attraction is within walking distance of the centre.
Seven Mile Beach
On the western side of Grand Cayman island, there is a long crescent-shaped coral-sand beach called Seven Mile Beach. You can explore the whole length of this area's enormous shoreline and while strolling, you'll run into a number of beach bars and eateries at the resorts. Seven Mile Beach offers a wide range of outdoor activities as well, including scuba diving, snorkelling and parasailing.

As well as being one of the top global ports to start and finish your cruise, Fort Lauderdale has plenty to do either side of your ocean adventure.
