Located in the original site of a Romanesque church, the building of Como Cathedral began ten years after the Milan Cathedral, in the late 14th century. Statues of Pliny the Elder and his nephew Pliny the Younger welcome visitors; standing proudly on the façade of the building. These are now sheltered by glass cases to avoid further environmental damage. Inside there are important tapestries and paintings depicting various saints and biblical/historical scenes.

This gorgeous and peaceful location is an ancient fishing village with a romantic and calm atmosphere, where visitors can come and enjoy the slow pace of life. The area has a rich and interesting history, in no small part due to the rivalry with nearby commune Como. It is home to the Villa Monestero, a convent founded in the early 13th century by some religious folk who had escaped from Comacina Island during the Milan/Como war at this time.

Located close to Lake Como’s shoreline, Piona Abbey is believed to date back to as early as the 7th century, as documents attesting to its existence have been found from around this time. The impressive structure is stood on top of Olgiasca Hill, and boasts interesting architecture and frescos. There is also a small shop selling natural wares made by the resident monks such as honey, liquor, cream, and medicinal herbs.

The Basilica di San Fedele was built in the year 1120, and is believed to stand on top of ruins of an older place of worship. Found in the main town square – the Piazza San Fedele – the church has long been important in the town’s history. The architecture is Romanesque style, but the façade was refurbished in 1914 and now includes a Renaissance style window.

Referred to by many as the ‘Pearl of Lake Como’, the picturesque town of Bellagio offers a quintessential Italian atmosphere, gorgeous views, and a number of interesting historical and architectural sites. Wander down cobbled streets, take a look at the 12th century Chiesa San Giacomo, and admire the Villas Serbelloni and Melzi. Villa Serbelloni was first built in the 15th century, and over the years has been a gorgeous holiday home and hotel at Lake Como. Many famous figures have stayed there including John F Kennedy, Winston Churchill, and Al Pacino. Today the property is owned by the Rockefeller Foundation.

Italy's Ravenna is home to the Basilica of San Vitale, which houses Christian Byzantine art and architecture. Dating back to the sixth-century church, it's one of eight Ravenna buildings that have been included as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

This museum is one of the hubs of the city's cultural life, hosting festivals, exhibits, and collections of both modern and ancient art. It is housed in a 16th-century monastery in the Public Gardens and is responsible for resuming cultural and recreational activities in addition to significant conservation and research projects.

In Ravenna, Italy, there is a basilica church called the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogothic ruler, built it as his royal chapel in the first half of the sixth century and it was originally consecrated to "Christ the Redeemer" in 504 AD.

This small and intimate beach provides a quiet getaway from the crowds. Relax in the sun watching the locals play water polo, before taking a dip in the crystal clear waters and exploring the nearby cliffs and caves.

A short ferry ride from Dubrovnik Old Town, Lokrum Island is a fantastic place for a day trip. With a beautiful botanical garden planted in the 19th century, the ruins of a Benedictine monastery and spots for swimming in the sea, you’ll love exploring this tiny island.

At 37 meters above the sea, Fortress Lovrijenac offers impressive views across the landscape. Used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, the fortress played an important role in protecting the Old City, which visitors will learn about as they explore the grounds.

Covering 1,940 metres with 6 fortresses, the Walls of Dubrovnik are a must visit for Game of Thrones fans and lovers of architecture. Visitors can join walking tours of the walls which take approximately two hours and offer unrivalled views over the city from the forts.

One of the most important forts in the Walls of Dubrovnik, it now houses the Maritime Museum and Aquarium, containing artefacts, paintings and documents telling the history of city. The aquarium, meanwhile, is where you’ll find marine life that thrives in the waters off Croatia.

After being restored numerous times following earthquakes, St Tryphon’s Cathedral continues to represent the expertise of Roman architecture. With many stunning artefacts and decorations, this cathedral is well worth exploring.

A short drive from Kotor, Lovćen National Park is home to imposing mountains including the spectacular Mount Lovćen standing 1,749 metres high. With no shortage of outdoor adventures to discover, visitors will love quad biking and zip lining in particular.

Nestled in lush surroundings with views over the town nearby, Aquapark Budva is perfect for spending a hot afternoon cooling off. The park features multiple pools and waterslides to suit a range of ages, as well as a restaurant, bars, shops and lockers.

Dating back to the 11th century, the historic Salerno Duomo was beautifully restored in the 1930s. Constructed in a Neapolitan Baroque/Rococo style, this picturesque cathedral features a bell tower (that dates to the 12th century), beautiful artwork in the interior and a Byzantine bronze door.

The Arechi Castle is a prominent mediaeval fortress that overlooks the city and the Gulf of Salerno from a height of 300 metres. The reason it is called Arechi is because the Lombard Duke Arechi II has historically been linked to the building of this fortress.

The Promenade Trieste, Salerno's most picturesque location, has become known as a popular landmark in the city. Locals and tourists alike love this 2km long promenade, due to the variety of shops, bars and restaurants that line it. The Taurine Baths - a Roman archaeological site dating back to the 1st century BC - are located around 4km from the urban centre of Civitavecchia. There is a legend that says the baths came to be after a bull scraped at the ground before a fight, and in doing so uncovered a hot water spring.

Aquafelix Waterpark is ideal for a day of fun with your family and friends. It is the largest water park in central Italy, and boasts areas dedicated to both adults and children.

The construction of the Michelangelo Fort began in 1508 and ended in 1537. The structure of the fortress, in true Renaissance style, has the shape of a quadrilateral with a tower in each corner, and the central tower has an octagonal layout. Its creation was ordered by Pope Julius II, to defend the Port of Civitavecchia against pirates and any other hostile encounters.

The Cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi is the most important church of Civitavecchia. Dating back to the 17th century and completely restored in 1950, it has a Baroque style and stands on the remains of a previous Franciscan church.

The Livorno Aquarium was first established in 1937, and was reopened again in 2010, following expansion works. It is the only venue of its kind to boast a Greek-Roman archaeological marine area, which houses a reproduction of a ship wreck.

The charm of the Old Fortress portrays the entire history of the city of Livorno. The area has been affected by numerous settlements since the Bronze Age, and the fortification itself has gone through several stages up to the present day.

The neighborhood of Venezia Nuova is the true historic center of the Livorno. During the months of July and August it hosts the music and arts event known as "Effetto Venezia", ​​where you can find shows, cultural events, and stalls.

The Terrazza Mascagni owes its name to the eponymous composer from Livorno. Located on the seafront of the city, the open terrace was designed in the 1920s and then expanded after World War II. It offers gorgeous views of the ocean and a lovely setting for socialising under the sun.

The Mercato delle Vettovaglie, also known as the Central Market, is an interesting 19th-century building overlooking the Fosso Reale canal in Livorno. The interior of the main hall was designed by Lorenzo Gori, and is a beautiful spot for exploring and buying local produce.

Piazza della Repubblica has been a popular social meeting place ever since nineteenth-century Livorno. It is most commonly known as "Voltone" by the locals, due to the vault that covers part of the Fosso Reale canal, which it overlooks.

Founded by the Phoenicians before being all but destroyed in 1706 by Louis XIV, this once mighty fortress dominates the bay with fantastic views out over the city and coast. Nowadays you’ll find a pleasant stroll in the gardens and a gorgeous waterfall.

Full of artisan shops and charming streets, Nice’s old town district is the perfect place to sample some Socca - a local salad Niçoise speciality made with chickpeas. A wander around the flower market is a must too, with intoxicating smells and dazzling colours.
