When cruising, you’ll have the chance to travel in complete comfort, wanting for nothing, while you enjoy fantastic food and engaging entertainment, and make lasting memories.
If you’re browsing Iglu Cruise’s latest cruise deals and wondering what it’s like to embark on a southern Spain & Portugal cruise, you should check out this cruise review from Laura, Iglu Cruise’s Digital PR & Content Executive. Recently, she visited Lisbon, Cadiz, Gibraltar and Seville with Azamara Cruises, spending several nights aboard Azamara Journey. Below, she shared her expert opinion on this wonderful experience and insider tips worth keeping in mind when you embark on an adventure like this yourself.
What was your first impression of Azamara Journey?
The Azamara Journey has a wonderful atmosphere; from the moment we stepped onboard, the staff were so friendly and helpful that it felt immediately warm and inviting. The design is beautiful, I especially loved the traditional wood accents throughout the ship, which felt both classic and fresh at the same time.
Who would you recommend this ship to?
I would recommend this ship to affluent travellers who want to be truly immersed in their destinations. Since children pay full price, it isn’t really geared toward families, making it perfect for those seeking a more adult-focused atmosphere. Azamara prides itself on having the most overnights and late-night sailings, and because it’s a smaller ship, it can dock in the heart of destinations like Seville, where larger ships can't reach.
Did you have a chance to see multiple cabin types? What were they like, and what’s one insider tip you’d like to share?
As the ship was sailing at full capacity, I wasn't able to view other cabin categories; however, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in an Oceanview (Outside) cabin. In terms of value, this category is excellent for travellers who want natural light without the higher price point of a balcony. Insider Tip: Don’t forget that room service is included 24/7. Having a hot breakfast delivered to your room or a midnight snack at no extra cost really adds a touch of luxury to the trip.
Did your accommodation have enough storage space for a full 7-night cruise?
There is ample storage for a 7-day sailing, featuring a large, illuminated wardrobe along with plenty of shelves and cupboards. While I initially wondered where two large suitcases would live, I discovered a great space-saving trick: the beds are designed with enough height to slide large suitcases underneath, keeping the floor space clear and the cabin feeling spacious.
How was the noise inside your accommodation? Are there any areas you advise avoiding for those selecting their own cabin?
The noise levels were generally very good. My cabin on Deck 4, Aft, was lovely and quiet. I did hear from others on the trip that they noticed the thrusters while we were docking in the forward cabins on the same deck. It’s worth keeping in mind for those who like a lie-in on port days!
If you could only eat in one complimentary restaurant for the whole trip, which one would you choose, and what’s one must-try dish you recommend?
Surprisingly, my top pick is the buffet! On the Azamara Journey, it’s a premium experience. The food is top-tier, the service is fast and friendly (with drinks served at the table), and the views from the outdoor aft deck are unbeatable.
Must-try: Definitely explore the vegan section, it’s impressive even for non-vegans, and make sure to grab a table outside for a sunset departure.

Some of the food you can enjoy on Azamara Journey
What about the speciality dining on Azamara Journey?
We dined at Aqualina, their Mediterranean speciality restaurant. The ambience and design are stunning, and the service was truly incredible; paired with the views, it makes for a very memorable evening. As a vegetarian, I found my pasta dish didn't quite feel like it justified the upcharge on its own, but the overall experience and high-end atmosphere certainly made the visit worthwhile.
If you had a drinks package, would you recommend it?
Yes, and yes.
What was the most surprising or under-the-radar activity that a first-time cruiser would miss?
The absolute standout is the AzAmazing Evening. On every cruise over 9 nights, Azamara hosts a bespoke, land-based event at no extra cost. Our experience, an orchestra performing inside St. Michael’s Cave in Gibraltar, was simply breathtaking. I have never been so moved by a performance; it was a deeply emotional experience that I will remember forever. It is an absolute "must-book" for any first-time cruiser.
What was the vibe of the pool deck onboard?
Relaxing retreat.
Did you check out the kids’ facilities available onboard? What were the highlights?
This cruise ship didn’t feature any facilities specifically aimed at younger cruisers.
Which destination was the biggest surprise, and why?
The biggest surprise for me was Gibraltar. It’s often overlooked, but the destination really came alive during the AzAmazing Evening in St. Michael’s Cave.

For those who prefer to explore independently, what’s the best thing to do within walking distance of the dock at your favourite destination?
Beyond the unforgettable AzAmazing Evening in St. Michael’s Cave, Gibraltar offers some hidden gems for independent explorers. I highly recommend a visit to the Alameda Botanical Gardens, a beautiful and peaceful hidden oasis that provides a lush escape from the main bustle of town. Afterwards, a stroll to Ocean Village Marina is a must; it’s the perfect spot to sit back with a drink, soak up the Mediterranean sun and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the waterfront.
What was disembarking like?
The disembarkation process was incredibly simple and streamlined. As I departed mid-cruise, I simply collected a clearance card from reception and was able to walk straight off the ship without any delays. While I didn't experience the final 'end of cruise' disembarkation with the full guest list, this mid-voyage process was impressively efficient and stress-free.
Compared to other cruise experiences, what makes this one stand out? Where could it improve?
Excelled: The Azamara Journey truly offers a six-star experience at sea. The quality of the food is superior to almost any other line I’ve experienced, and the 'more inclusive' nature of the fare, including spirits, speciality coffees, and the signature AzAmazing Evening, provides exceptional value and a seamless guest experience.
Improvement: The only very minor drawback was the speed of the muster drill. While safety is obviously the priority, the process felt a bit dated and lengthy compared to the faster, more efficient drills found on other lines. Improving this would help guests get into 'holiday mode' even sooner.
What’s one bit of advice you would give someone booking this exact cruise that they won’t find in a brochure?
Two things: First, order the included breakfast to your room (just put the tag out by 1:00 am) and enjoy it in your cabin bath robes for a five-star start to the day. Second, for the Seville arrival, get a good vantage point on a high deck or in the Living Room lounge. Watching a ship of this size navigate the river and locks into the city centre is a hidden highlight of the itinerary!
