        Piraeus (tours to Athens)

Piraeus is a stunning port city in the Athens urban area and an important entry point to the ancient city of Athens for Mediterranean cruises in the Aegean Sea. Although, that doesn’t mean Piraeus has nothing to offer visitors – the truth is far from it, in fact. With a recorded history dating back to the city’s foundation in the 5th century BC, Piraeus is home to stunning historic sites, impressive architecture, and a rich history of its own – originally established as a prototype port for Athens. It’s now Greece’s largest port and a bustling metropolis; while tours to Athens are always worth considering, you’ll enjoy the time you spend in Piraeus.

The largest city on the Mediterranean Sea and the second-largest city in Egypt, Alexandria is a stunning holiday hotspot overflowing with incredible culture and a rich ancient history worth exploring when you arrive. A settlement founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and somewhere now known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, this city is known for being home to several ancient wonders – the Lighthouse of Alexandria and Great Library of Alexandria being among the most famous. An important intellectual and cultural centre throughout the Hellenistic age (which starts around 400 BC) to the start of the Middle Ages in the 8th century, the sightseeing experiences in Alexandria are among the most rewarding in the world. However, that’s far from the only thing to look forward to when it comes to visiting Alexandria via cruise; this city is home to some sensational seafood cuisine, boutique shopping experiences, and breathtaking beaches. You’ll have over 30 to choose from in Alexandria alone! So, whether you’re looking to soak up the sunshine on a public beach, or enjoy the warm weather with a table and a parasol umbrella on a more relaxed touristic beach, you’ll have plenty of options when you arrive.

Food and service excellent Silver Dawn is a great ship with all amenities required. Only disappointment was the change of itinerary due to various weather and strike related problems. Missed St Malo and Porto also night in Lisbon with extra sea day instead. Lost our inclusive excursions with no compensation offered or alternative excursions offered . This is not a bargain cruise and they could at least given on board spend to compensate for the missed ports of call and cancelled excursions.

The ship is quite new so everything was in excellent condition. The suite staff were superb and friendly as were all other members of the crew. The food was good, ample and well presented but the amount on show in the buffet gave rise for concern about how much would be wasted. Less on show and replenished as necessary would be good. The excursions were well organised other than the shuttle which didn’t go to Newcastle despite being advertised as such. More an issue for Silversea than Iglu. All in all a great trip and superb value for money.

Arts Café was great, with a good changing selection of light bites and friendly staff. Restaurant menus didn’t indicate if any dishes were plant based, and there was only one or two items changed daily. The breakfast and lunch buffets had a great selection, but the only food we saw labelled as vegan or plant based were an odd desert. None of the salads and associated dressings were classified. Most of the staff were very professional and helpful. Loved that we were offered in-suite toiletries, including an option for sensitive skin
