Things to do
Palafitos
The Palafitos of Castro, Chiloé Island, are renowned 19th-century colourful wooden cottages perched on high stilts over the water. The view varies greatly with the tide. High tide brings water to the stilts, while low tide shows a muddy shore where boats can rest. They provide a distinct, rustic, and attractive experience by mixing traditional Chilote buildings with modern amenities such as cafes, boutique hotels, and artist workshops, particularly in the Pedro Montt and Gamboa neighbourhoods.
Iglesia San Francisco de Castro
The Iglesia San Francisco de Castro is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage wooden church in Castro, Chile, notable for its vivid yellow-and-purple facade and soaring neo-Gothic towers. Designed by Italian architect Eduardo Provasoli, it combines neo-Gothic and classic architecture with traditional Chilote wooden techniques, such as the use of wooden dowels instead of nails. Completed in 1912, it is made entirely of natural alerce and cypress wood, with a warm, arched woodwork interior that contrasts with the colourful façade. Located close to the Plaza de Armas, a lovely, central hub known for its lively local vibe with plenty of cafes and restaurants.
Museo de Arte Moderno Chiloé (MAM)
The Museo de Arte Moderno Chiloé (MAM) is an independently operated, non-subsidized gallery founded in 1988 and housed in a delightfully restored rustic barn in the Parque Municipal. It combines contemporary art by local and international artists with traditional Chilote structures and tranquil, beautiful gardens. To sustain its independence, it offers a suggested donation box.
