Considered a significant military structure, its construction ended in 1577. Years after it was built by the Spanish to defend the city, it was used as a prison to house the formidable dictator Trujillo.

In the centre of the town, Independence Park is a colonial central plaza. Located next to the San Felipe Cathedral, it features several statues and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
