Things to do
Yu Garden
Beside the City God Temple in the Old City of Shanghai, this extensive garden is home to impressive rock formations and beautiful ponds, with the highlight being the Exquisite Jade Rock – a unique, porous five-tonne boulder rumoured to have been a gift for Emperor Huizong in the 12th century.
Shanghai Museum
An impressive museum of ancient Chinese art that’s home to over 120,000 pieces of historical importance, the Shanghai Museum features collections of furniture from the Qing and Ming dynasties, intricate Chinese ceramics, ancient Chinese paintings, and more.
The Bund
Running along the western bank of the Huangpu River, this section of Shanghai’s waterfront has significant European influence with Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance architecture on display; at the height of European colonialism, from the 1860s to the 1930s, this was the rich and powerful centre of the foreign establishment in the city, and is now home to the historic Shanghai Club building, the Custom House, and more.
