Legislative Palace of Uruguay
A monumental example of neo-classical architecture in the heart of Montevideo, the Legislative Palace of Uruguay acts as the meeting place of the General Assembly of Uruguay, the seat of the legislative branch of the Uruguayan government, and a remarkable landmark to see when you visit. Built between 1904 and 1925, it was constructed to commemorate 100 years of Uruguayan independence.
Obelisk of Montevideo
Built in 1930 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Constitution of Uruguay as a homage to the original members of the General Assembly, this three-sided structure stretches 40 metres up and is flanked by three bronze structures representing Law, Liberty, and Force. In 1983, it was the site of Rio de Libertad – the nation’s largest demonstration ever, demanding an end to the civil-military dictatorship in place at the time.
Palacio Salvo
Standing 95 metres tall, this stunning structure takes advantage of eclectic architectural designs to deliver one of the most remarkable buildings in Montevideo. Casapueblo
Just 13km from central Punta del Este, Casapueblo is a stunning structure inspired by houses on the Mediterranean coast of Santorini and the nest of a red ovenbird – the national bird of Argentina. Constructed by, and once permanent residence of, Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro, Casapueblo now hosts a hotel, a museum, and a restaurant among other amenities.

At the mouth of the Itajai River, Itajai is a unique city in southern Brazil and a prominent settlement when it comes to this nation’s colonial history. An important region for Portuguese settlers by the early 19th century, this city is also home to a substantial number of German immigrants and these European influences are clear throughout. This stunningly-white catholic church is a fantastic example of eclectic architecture, with the main structure having gone through a variety of alterations and improvements over the last two hundred years. Starting as a smaller parish church in the early 19th century, the church we see now was blessed as late as the 1970s – an impressive testament to the value of this landmark to the local community and nation as a whole.

Among the world’s most populous cities and the largest urban area by population outside of Asia, São Paulo is the financial capital of Brazil and a destination offering everyone an incredible adventure when they arrive. To say there’s a lot for you to enjoy when you’re in São Paulo would be an understatement and a half. A stone’s throw from the stunning sandy beaches of Praia Grande and Santos, and surrounded by stunning parks and hiking routes boasting breathtaking views, those of you wanting to spend some time in nature will have no trouble doing that while visiting this remarkable city. Beyond that, though, you’ll find all the attractions and historical landmarks you would expect in a city of this scale with such a vibrant history – having been founded by Jesuit priests in 1554. For culture vultures, the São Paulo Museum of Art and Catavento Museum are worth checking out when you arrive. São Paulo Cathedral, while a recent construction, is no less breathtaking than the other religious buildings in Brazil – not to mention the fact that it’s considered the fourth-largest neo-Gothic cathedral in the world. You’ll also find the Interlagos Circuit, home to the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix, in the heart of the city; if you’re a racing fan, this is worth visiting whether it’s race day or not. Catavento Museum
A modern interactive science museum in the heart of São Paulo, the Cavento Museum is an intriguing attraction to explore when visiting this incredible city. Housed in the unique Palacio das Industrias, an impressive building built between 1911 and 1924 that was once the seat of the Legislative Assembly in São Paulo, the museum features exhibits on the dinosaurs which once inhabited the region, human ingenuity, the universe, and more. São Paulo Cathedral
Built on the site of São Paulo’s original church, which dates back to 1589, São Paulo Cathedral is a modern interpretation of a traditional Gothic cathedral and it stands today as the fourth-largest neo-Gothic cathedral in the world. An impressive two-spire structure that is over 300 ft tall at its highest point, the cathedral is decorated with cultural imagery of Brazilian produce and native animals, alongside traditional Catholic designs. With the original 1912 plans for the cathedral found during renovations, what we see today is a faithful representation of what the cathedral would’ve looked like upon completion over 100 years prior.

Sitting on the Costa Verde (Green Coast), Parati is a tourist hotspot known for its historical town centre, stunning section of coastline, and dramatic mountainous backdrop. Interestingly, the entire town is listed as a National Historic Landmark by IPHAN, with over 80% of the area being protected. The Cairucu Environmental Protection Area, for example, is an important remnant of the Atlantic Forest biome. Meanwhile, the Juatinga Ecological Reserve protects a peninsula and the traditional lifestyle of numerous villages along the coastline around Parati, and the Taimos Ecological Station monitors the marine ecosystem of the area and the nearby Ilha Grande Bay. A charming colonial town with a calmer atmosphere than Brazil’s other coastline settlements, Parati is the perfect place to soak in the sunshine and appreciate the stunning scenery surrounding you. Forte Defensor
Built in 1703 and equipped with six cannons, this fortress was constructed in an effort to defend the settlement’s important commercial warehouses. However, it was left in ruin for decades after the region’s economic decline. Reconstructed in 1822, it’s believed that this is where the first nucleus of the town Parati began. One of seven forts constructed around the harbour here, this is just one of two surviving fortifications.
Serra da Bocaina National Park
Created in 1971, this sprawling national park is approximately 104,000 hectares in size and home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including: pines, trumpet trees, palm trees, cats, sloths, monkeys, snakes, and birds. Several species of amphibians are also only known to be found in the park and the surrounding area, including the Bocaina dwarf frog and Bocaina big tooth frog.

A forest-covered island around 12km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Ilha Grande is the perfect destination for the explorers among you. It’s home to several well-maintained and well-signposted walking trails which will afford you the opportunity to admire the island’s incredible wildlife – of which, you’ll find everything from parrots and hummingbirds to monkeys – and stunning scenery. With roughly 63% of the island covered by the Ilha Grande State Park, and numerous smaller reserves in place protecting the flora, fauna, and traditional communities that reside here, 87% of the island has a protected status. While you won’t find too many attractions here, this is a great place to get in touch with nature and explore a unique environment that – in part, at least – is endangered.

Lopes Mendes
An extended palm tree-lined white-sand beach with crystal-clear waters, this beach is the definition of paradise and just one of the beaches you can take advantage of when you’re on Ilha Grande. If you’re looking to unwind in the sunshine with sand between your toes, this is the perfect place to do just that.
Candido Mendes Prison
Now abandoned, this prison was once home to some of Brazil’s worst – until it was closed in 1994. Reachable by following a walking trail from Vila de Dois Rois, this prison is the setting for a whole host of escapee stories – with one of the most famous being Escadinho, who escaped via helicopter!

Rua das Pedras is a cobblestoned main avenue through Buzios that plays host to an abundance of entertainment venues, restaurants, and acts as the heart of the area when it comes to revelry and excitement.
Orla Bardot
An extension of Rua das Pedras, a main street that acts as the heart of Buzios, Orla Bardot is a stunning stretch of oceanfront that links two of the oldest areas of town together. You’ll also see several statues along this section of oceanfront, including representations of actress Brigitte Bardot and former president Juscelino Kubitschek.

With an impressive population of nearly 7 million people, Rio de Janeiro is a bustling seaside city that’s known for its iconic attractions, including Copacabana Beach and the 38-metre-tall Christ the Redeemer statue, which stands atop Mount Corcovado.
