Located on a small island at the end of La Caleta beach, this remarkable historical site was once home to a Temple of Kronos – a Titan among the Greek gods, and father of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. The castle we see today was built circa 1706 in order to provide the northern flank of the city with defence, and the levee linking the island to the city was constructed in 1860. This castle was also the site of Spain’s second electric-powered lighthouse, which was added to the structures on this island in 1908.

Royal Alcázar of Seville
A historic royal palace in the heart of Seville, which was once an Islamic-era citadel in the 10th century before eventually being expanded upon and rebuilt throughout the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries, the Royal Alcázar of Seville is an impressive example of Mudejar-style architecture but draws on Gothic and Renaissance elements, giving it a unique character among other palaces in the region. Good points - spacious shower cubicle (despite poor lighting), excellent bar service. Awfully designed toilet cubicle with absurd and pointless sliding door which scraped us every time we passed through it. It appears to be retro-fit for no good reason. Cubicle would have been tiny before (think airline toilets) then they added door and frame which reduced dimensions by c. 3" on doorway width and c. 4" on cubicle width. Nobody would want to be in there brushing their teeth while somebody was doing their business behind a flimsy transparent door. Lighting insufficient in bathroom. Cabin is too snug for us.
Food onboard was inconsistant although restaurants look good. I love soups but wasn't impressed with theirs. Indian food was good. Entertainment was not as good as other ships we've been on, although there are many talented performers.

Restaurant food excellent, buffer mediocre.
All staff superb apart from two men on the customer service desk who didn’t want to be there.
Organisation poor eg tenders (appalling), no ship wide announcements (nothing in breakfast).
Cruise Director didn’t engage with guests.
No ‘lectures’ or even info about next port of call.
Theatre entertainment mediocre.
No ‘index’ of films on stateroom tv and those shown were on repeat and limited.
Stateroom & balcony small, cabin shower-room cramped due to poor layout.

The itinerary for this cruise was good. Unfortunately due to the weather it was unable to dock in the first 2 ports so more time was spent onboard. There seemed to be no contingency plans for activities for this extra time onboard. The buffet food was below expectations based on other Norwegian cruises we have experienced. However the food in the complimentary dining rooms was fine. Our cabin was clean and as expected with a visit everyday from our cabin attendant. On the whole the staff worked very hard.

3 Nov 2025
Overall a disappointing cruise - the worst we’ve taken although we had a good time in spite of NCL. We have always told friends and family you won’t eat as well as you do on a good cruise ship. Not this time sadly. Main dining food was often tepid and very repetitive of an okay standard. Not what we’ve been used to on other cruise lines. The theatre shows with a couple of exceptions were generally average with little effort - one night they stuck on an old Indian Jones movie instead of bothering with any show at all. Service throughout the ship was very mixed. Some great staff who wanted to engage but many more who were disinterested. The cruise director was overbearing and annoying. She said several times that she was the youngest cruise director ever and called passengers who were leaving after a show had finished rather than listen to her spouting on disrespectful for leaving. However every time she walked past us having a drink in a bar and would ask how we were or were we enjoying the cruise etc, never ever stopped to listen to an actual response - disrespectful I say back at you. If you have a gluten allergy or intolerance watch out as you are a second class citizen with this cruise line and are nowhere near catered for despite what they think. On initial embarkation we were all told they would not be giving the daily piece of paper you tend to get detailing the days activities, shop, restaurant times, shows on, general weather and sea conditions etc etc. This was to save paper so very environmental. However we probably averaged about three sheets of paper a day being bombarded with all the upsell so no concerns over the environment there. I could go on but to end with the completely disorganised shambles that often happened when leaving the ship for a day out. The queues weren’t managed and it often became a free for all. One shuttle they actually put on in port again had the most massive queue and none seemed to know what was going on. I’ve never experienced such badly organised pier arrangements and staff were nowhere to be seen when they were needed. I said I wouldn’t go on but need to say when asking the excursions team on ship what our options to get into Amsterdam were as we were not in the port we expected they were very unhelpful- offered no advice but did try to sell us there $119 per person coach in to Amsterdam for about the two hours we would actually get there. Many of the piers the ship stopped at were not where expected and necessitated considerable expense and effort to actually get to the city we were meant to be visiting. NCL never again!

With welcoming waters and sandy beaches at Playa de Torrenueva, Playa de Granada, and Playa de las Azucenas (just to name a few), you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to soak up the sunshine if you’re looking for a beach day. Motril is also home to some sensational restaurants and boutique shopping experiences, with an interesting pre-industrial museum to boot. However, this port of call is also an excellent gateway to Granada – one of Spain’s most storied cities and an urban centre overflowing with incredible culture, cuisine, and historic landmarks. That, and a gorgeous dramatic backdrop afforded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Under an hour away from Motril, Granada boasts numerous breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Sites steeped in history, a variety of colourful shops to explore, and some of Spain’s best restaurants – the perfect place to indulge in some authentic Spanish cuisine. However you decide to spend your time in this stunning slice of southern Spain, you’re in for a real treat.
Things to do in Motril:
The Alhambra
Found in Granada, the Alhambra is one of the world’s most famous examples of Islamic architecture; a sprawling palace and fortress complex dating back to the 13th century, this incredible landmark was begun by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, the first Nasrid emir, and built upon by other prominent figures throughout the next several-hundred years. Now a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alhambra sits on an outcrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and affords visitors a breathtaking view of the region.
Generalife
A former 14th century summer palace and country estate directly uphill from the impressive Alhambra palace complex in Granada, Generalife is a stunning cultural landmark in this historic area of Andalusia; visiting here, you’ll have the chance to explore tiered gardens inspired by Italian designs, which were implemented in the 1930s and 1940s, alongside the unique amalgamation of Nasrid architecture, Islamic designs, Catholic iconography, and traditional Granadian-style walkways. An elegant site that has evolved over hundreds of years, Generalife offers you a unique insight into the history of the region, in addition to stunning views of The Alhambra from afar and beyond.

Cadiz

Despite its impressive modernity as a major city, Cádiz is one of the oldest continually-inhabited cities in Western Europe and an urban centre dominated by well-preserved historical landmarks – most of which can be found in Casco Antiguo, the Old Town within the remnants of Cádiz’s city walls. That doesn’t mean you won’t find any modern comforts here, though; while you’re sightseeing, you can expect to enjoy flavourful food from fantastic restaurants, comfortable cafes, and more. Sitting on Spain’s southern coast, the Port of Cádiz is also a short trip from Seville – a stunning Spanish city boasting its own unique culture and unique historical landmarks. So, if a tour of Seville is on the agenda, you’ll have no trouble getting there and back when you disembark here.
Things to do in Cadiz:
Playa de La Victoria
Playa de la Victoria is a breathtaking stretch of sandy beach perfect for sun lounging and enjoying the glorious weather in southern Spain; with restaurants, bars, shops, and more all within close walking distance, you’ll never have to travel far to find what you need when enjoying a day here.
Castillo de San Sebastián
Located on a small island at the end of La Caleta beach, this remarkable historical site was once home to a Temple of Kronos – a Titan among the Greek gods, and father of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. The castle we see today was built circa 1706 in order to provide the northern flank of the city with defence, and the levee linking the island to the city was constructed in 1860. This castle was also the site of Spain’s second electric-powered lighthouse, which was added to the structures on this island in 1908.
Plaza de España
An impressive plaza in Parque de Maria Luisa in Seville, Plaza de España is a remarkable landmark example of Regionalism architecture – blending the Baroque Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Moorish Revival styles together. Completed in 1928, this stunning area was featured in exterior shots of the City of Theed on Naboo in Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones and scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, among other film and TV productions – something that only exemplifies its incredible beauty.
When the royal family are visiting Seville, they still occupy the upper stories of the alcázar to this day – though, you can also explore this area when they’re not in town. A stunning palace with an impressive collection of elegant interiors, interesting artworks, and gardens, this is a fantastic place to visit when you’re in Seville.
