Things to do
Hurtigruten Museum
The Hurtigruten Museum offers a one-of-a-kind "ship-in-a-bottle" experience, with the fully restored 1956 MS Finnmarken housed inside a glass building and allowing visitors to wander around the engine room, cabins, and decks. Visitors can explore the entire ship as well as modern, interactive exhibits that highlight over 130 years of Norwegian coastal history. The museum houses artefacts, models, and stories about the Hurtigruten's participation in WWII and its usefulness as a major coastal artery. Eat at the Museum Café, which is set inside the MS Finnmarken's former dining saloon.
Local Cuisine
Stokmarknes' food is marked by traditional Norwegian Arctic fare. As a coastal town, fresh fish is essential, especially klippfisk (dried and salted cod), bacalao (cod stew), boknafisk (semi-dried cod), and lutefisk. Fresh prawns and mussels are particularly popular. Reindeer and moose are common game options. Traditional dishes like kjøttkaker (meatballs) and fårikål (mutton and cabbage stew) are popular, providing warm and comforting meals. Located in the Vesterålen archipelago, the town provides a cosy dining experience with rustic, maritime-themed surroundings on the waterfront.
Børøya
Walking to Børøya from Stokmarknes provides a tranquil and picturesque stroll with panoramic views of the Langøysundet strait, neighbouring fjords, and the majestic 1,011-meter Hadsel Bridge. This short stroll connects a tiny residential island with a tranquil, coastal environment, providing magnificent views of the Vesterålen mountain scenery. It features a walking trail and a better observation point over the ocean. Børøya offers stunning views of the 1,011-meter Hadsel Bridge, which connects Børøya to Langøya. This iconic cantilever bridge is part of the Vesterålen bridge network, constructed in the 1970s.
