The significant impact of the radical Khmer Rouge regime can be felt everywhere in Cambodia, and this insightful tour aims to offer you a deeper understanding of why that is through an exploration of the atrocities committed under the revolutionary dictator Pol Pot in the late 1970s. You’ll start this experience at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former schoolhouse that was transformed into one of the Khmer Rouge regime’s largest detention and torture centres. Now an important educational experience, this museum documents the horrific events that occurred here and offers visitors a wider insight into the Cambodian genocide – which took place from 1975 to 1979. You’ll then continue onto the Killing Fields in Choeung Ek, a mass grave site where thousands of Cambodians were executed during this period. Today, this site is a memorial to those lost and an important reminder of the harrowing events that occurred mere decades ago. Ending this experience on a lighter note, though, you’ll visit the famous Russian Market before returning to Phnom Penh. An impressive marketplace, this is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs and learn more about authentic Cambodian crafts and wares.

Offering a refined dining experience that highlights the finest traditional Cambodian cuisine, you’ll have the chance to indulge in a sensational menu of classic Khmer dishes made with a modern twist. Complemented with a colourful cocktail, this is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to the incredible culture of Cambodia – all while soaking in the serene atmosphere of the Siem Reap River.
Things to see:
Siem Reap River
A winding river that flows from the Phom Kulen mountain range and cuts through the heart of Siem Reap, the Siem Reap River started as a fast-flowing channel of water – fast-flowing and quick to erode the environment around it. Over hundreds of years, and thanks to the introduction of Barays, the flow of the river has slowed and gained a multitude of meanders on its route from the mountains to the sea.
Prahok Ktis
A Cambodian delicacy, Prahok Kitish is a dipping sauce made of fermented fish, pork, and thinly-sliced river fish braised with coconut cream and kaffir lime leaves. It’s often served alongside baby aubergines and blanched vegetables crudités. Sweet, salty, and a little bit spicy, this unique dish will leave you wanting more.
Cambodian Sour Soup
A soothing soup that takes many forms across Cambodia and Southeast Asia, Sour Soup (which isn’t actually that sour at all) brings together a variety of local vegetables, spices, and different meats to create a warming, flavourful broth. Often served with rice, this mouthwatering dish is worth tasting.

An important symbol of Cambodia and the world’s largest religious monument, Angkor Wat is a sight worth seeing at every opportunity – doubly so at this time of day.

Angkor Wat Temple
Considered the largest religious structure in the world, Angkor Wat was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu in 1150 before transitioning into a Buddhist temple by the end of the century; one of the best examples of Khmer architecture surviving today, most of this temple’s surfaces are carved with reliefs depicting scenes from Indian literature and the site is home to over 1,700 depictions of Hindu and Buddhist deities.
Angkor City
Capital city of the Khmer Empire and home to Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, researchers believe that Angkor was the largest pre-industrial city in the world by surface area which utilized a complicated water management system to support an estimated population of 750,000 to one million people throughout the late 9th century to the 15th century.

Angkor Thom
The last and most enduring capital of the Khmer Empire, this stunning city sits on the west bank of the Siem Reap River roughly a mile from Angkor Wat; established in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII and a key location in his expansion-focused building programs, this site is home to some spectacular Khmer ruins – including the Bayon Buddhist temple, the Preah Palilay Buddhist sanctuary, and the Prasat Suor Prat towers.
Phimeanakas Temple
Phimeanakas is a Khelang-style temple built throughout the reign of Rajendravarman II at the end of the 10th century, with construction actually completing under his successor Suryavarman I. It sits within Angkor Thom, and legends suggest that it was here Khmer kings would spend the first watch of every night with a woman thought to represent a Naga (divine half-human, half-serpent beings) to discern whether death would befall him, or calamity would strike his kingdom.
Terrace of the Elephants
Part of Angkor Thom, the Terrace of the Elephants was a platform used by King Jayavarman VII to watch his victorious returning armies. Roughly 350 metres long, the eastern face of the wall is adorned with carvings of elephants and what we see today is primarily the foundational platforms on which a larger structure would have once stood.

Things to see:
Cambodian Landmine Museum
Founded by Aki Ra in the 2000s, a former Khmer Rouge child soldier who works as a deminer, the Cambodian Landmine Museum is an interesting collection of landmines and Cambodia’s unique history with war; it highlights the horrors of landmines, while explaining that their danger persists long after the war itself stops, and acts as a relief facility for children from at-risk communities and those affected by landmines. Over 20 children live in the museum, and are cared for by funds raised by the museum.

Constructed throughout the 10th century and consecrated in 967, Bantaray Srei is unique due to being the only major temple in Angkor – the capital of the ancient Khmer Empire – not to be built by imperial rulers. Though, its construction is reported to counsellors to King Rahendravarman II. An active temple from its construction to at least 1303, this temple was rediscovered in 1914 and several sections have been restored using the original architectural elements over the years; so, what you see today is a fantastic representation of what it was like hundreds of years ago.
Preah Dak
Just east of Angkor, Preah Dak is a charming Cambodian village known for its interesting intersection of traditional Khmer customs and authentic Cambodian life alongside the vibrant tropical jungle surrounding it. Offering visitors a unique insight into life here, and the chance to check out local art and food, this is an immersive experience you won’t want to miss.

Travelling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh along the Mekong River is an incredibly rewarding experience, and this three-night river cruise will see you make this journey in complete comfort, with fantastic food, exciting evening entertainment, and days full of interesting excursions. On the first day, ahead of embarkation, you’ll travel from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham, stopping at the historic Kampong Kdei Bridge before meeting your river cruise ship. The following morning, after an incredible evening onboard, you’ll head ashore on an excursion to Angkor Ban; this unique village will offer you an invaluable insight into local life before an afternoon excursion to Silk Island. Here, you’ll have the chance to learn more about traditional Cambodian silk weaving, from worm to loom. Next, on the following day, you’ll disembark on excursions to both Koh Chen and Oudong, the ancient capital of Cambodia, before hopping on a pedal-powered cyclo to Raffles Hotel Le Royal to enjoy a signature cocktail in an elegant five-star hotel. The next morning, when you arrive in Phnom Penh, you’ll have the chance to enjoy breakfast onboard before disembarking; then, the next leg of your incredible adventure begins.
Things to see:
Kampong Kdei Bridge
Also known as Spean Praptos, Kampong Kdei Bridge was once the longest stone-arch bridge in the world; at roughly 285ft in length, the bridge crosses the Chickreng River on the route from Angkor to Phnom Penh. It was built in the 12th century, during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, and is one of the few surviving Khmer Empire-era bridges today.
Angkor Ban
A quaint khum (commune) in Battambang Province, Angkor Ban is a small village renowned for its century-old wooden houses and interesting insight into rural Cambodian life. Under the Khmer Rouge, this village’s buildings were used for housing and storage, somewhat protecting much of the structures here from destruction. You’ll also find a unique two-storey Khmer-style pagoda in Angkor Ban.
Koh Chen
Koh Chen is an island village in Tonle Sap Lake famous for its clay and silver-craft, a practice that was almost lost during the rule of Khmer Rouge. When visiting, you’ll have the chance to meet a local copper and silversmith, learning more about the traditional processes still in practice to this day.
Oudong
Found just north of Phnom Penh, Oudong is a must-see destination when in Cambodia. Once a royal residence and acting capital of Cambodia from 1601 to 1866, Oudong is a remarkable city dominated by Phnom Oudong (Oudong Mountain). Home to an impressive necropolis, Oudong Temple is one of the most impressive sites here; atop Phnom Oudong and intricately decorated, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding area when visiting this unique temple complex.
Elephant Bar, at Raffles Hotel Le Royal
A legendary watering hole in Phnom Penh, the Elephant Bar at Raffles Hotel Le Royal is a stylish spot for refreshments and home to one of the largest gin collections in Asia. Phnom Penh - Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda
DAY 8
Cambodia’s most populous city and acting capital since 1865, Phnom Penh is a destination boasting an incredible blend of unique histories and modern delights; an important location for both the Khmer Empire and the subsequent European colonialists, you’ll find an abundance of culturally significant and politically important sites in Phnom Penh. Among the most important, and certainly some of the most impressive, are found in the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda complex – and you’re going to have a chance to explore this during your time in the Cambodian capital. A site established in 1866, the Royal Palace is the official residence of the King of Cambodia; featuring a defensive wall, elaborate throne room, and several towering spires, this is a fantastic example of Khmer architecture in action. The Silver Pagoda, a temple inlaid with over 5,000 silver tiles, houses some of Cambodia’s most significant national treasures – the Emerald Buddha of Cambodia and life-sized Maitreya Buddha chief among them. While exploring this incredible location, you’ll also visit the National Museum of Cambodia, a stunning sandstone museum showcasing the world’s largest collection of Khmer artwork. An experience that offers invaluable insight into how Cambodia’s rich history influences its society today, you won’t forget your time in Phnom Penh.
Things to see:
Royal Palace of Cambodia
Initially constructed by King Norodom between 1866 and 1870, the Royal Palace of Cambodia is the official residence of Cambodian monarchs. Throughout the 1920s, much of the original structure was demolished and rebuilt, and the King’s living area makes up over half the total area of the Royal Palace complex – and is closed to the public. However, this site is an impressive example of Khmer architecture and highlights the opulence enjoyed by Cambodian royalty today.
Silver Pagoda
The Silver Pagoda, officially named Wat Ubaosoth Ratanaram, was constructed in the 19th century alongside the Royal Palace of Cambodia and houses several significant national treasures. Its name primarily comes from the thousands of silver tiles adorning the floor, and numerous national treasures are found within. You’ll also find the cremated remains of King Norodom Sihanouk here, one of the most consequential Cambodian leaders in the modern era.
National Museum of Cambodia
Cambodia’s leading historical and archaeological museum, the National Museum of Cambodia was established in the 1920s and features over 14,000 items from prehistoric times to the Khmer Empire era and beyond.

Thean Hou Temple
A six-tiered temple dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu, Theanu Hou is situated on 1.67 acres of property on Lorong Bellamy, atop Robson Heights, with views of Jalan Syed Putra. Built in 1987 and formally inaugurated in 1989, it's a captivating attraction to visit whilst in the city.

A great cruise with interesting port calls. I only did the Bousan tour and it was good. The rest of the time I went off ship by myself and enjoyed the independence.
The port bus transfers were expensive.
The staff, service and dinning options on board were excellent .
As always, I consider it wasn't good value for money as I am a solo traveler and whatever cruise line I go on solos pay extra for the package.

Siem Reap - Welcome Dinner
DAY 2
Starting your exciting adventure in Siem Reap, the second-largest city in Cambodia, you’ll enjoy an incredible welcome dinner at the glamorous Chanrey Tree Restaurant – a riverside dining spot in the heart of the city centre.

Staying in a hotel here, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the lively atmosphere of this city between exciting excursions to local landmarks and incredible historic sites.
Siem Reap - Angkor Wat at sun rise
DAY 3
Seeing the remarkable Angkor Wat temple at sunrise is something truly special, but that does mean you’re in for an early start. Departing your hotel in the early hours, you’ll transfer to the Angkor Wat temple complex – just north of Siem Reap city centre – where you’ll have the chance to marvel at the magnificent architecture of this Khmer temple as the sun rises, basking the iconic landmark in a stunning orange glow. An important symbol of Cambodia and the world’s largest religious monument, Angkor Wat is a sight worth seeing at every opportunity – doubly so at this time of day.
Things to see:

Siem Reap - Angkor Complex Tour
DAY 3
While admiring the impressive Angkor Wat Temple Complex from afar is far from a bad experience, this comprehensive full-day tour will give you the chance to explore the ancient heart of the Khmer Empire in more detail; throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to marvel at the remarkable surviving ruins of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the wider Angkor area. Starting in the centre of the complex, you’ll head east to Ta Prohm. A jungle-surrounded temple famous for featuring in 2001’s Tomb Raider, this unique ruin was originally completed in 1186 and is known for its dilapidated state due to the invasive snake-like roots of Tetrameles trees. Once you’ve spent some time here and stopped for lunch, you’ll head to the South Gate of Angkor Thom; this dramatic entrance is lined with statues depicting good and evil gods, with many of the original statues restored to give visitors a sense of what it was like in its prime. Through this gate, you will visit Bayon – an intricately-decorated temple adorned with hundreds of smiling faces – before continuing on to Phimeanakas. Climbing to the top of this pyramid-shaped temple, you’ll have the chance to admire the awe-inspiring sight of the Angkor ruins from above. You’ll end your tour of the Angkor Wat Temple Complex by taking in the impressive wall of the Terrace of the Elephants before returning to your hotel.
Things to see:
Angkor Wat Temple
Considered the largest religious structure in the world, Angkor Wat was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu in 1150 before transitioning into a Buddhist temple by the end of the century; one of the best examples of Khmer architecture surviving today, most of this temple’s surfaces are carved with reliefs depicting scenes from Indian literature and the site is home to over 1,700 depictions of Hindu and Buddhist deities.

Banteay Srei Temple & Landmine Museum
DAY 4
While the iconic Angkor Wat is among the most famous landmarks in Cambodia and Southeast Asia, it’s far from the only interesting ruin in and around Siem Reap. While in this region, you’re going to travel north from Siem Reap city centre to Bantaray Srei – an impressive 10th century temple dedicated to Hindu gods Shiva and Parvati. Built using red sandstone and remarkably well-preserved, this temple is recognised as the “jewel of Khmer art” and famed for its ornamental decorations. During your visit, you’ll also have the chance to visit Preah Dak, a small Cambodian village known for Num Banh Chok (lightly fermented rice noodles) and Num Akor Tnout (steamed dessert palm cakes). Your return trip from Bantaray Srei will also feature a stop at the Cambodian Landmine Museum. A unique museum founded by a former Khmer Rouge child soldier, who has since spent his time demining the region, this interesting site will offer you some insight into Cambodia’s more-recent history, complementing the ancient ruins you visited earlier in the day.
Bantaray Srei

DAY 4
If you want to know more about what life is like in Siem Reap and Cambodia, this unique experience is one to look forward to. An interesting excursion, you’ll travel south of Siem Reap city centre to Wat Athvea in order to meet Cambodian visual artist Channy Chhoeun. Born in Battambang and relocated to the jungle as part of a government scheme that gave underprivileged families farmland, Chhoeun has had a unique upbringing, but one that offers you a unique insight into recent Cambodian history. Touring his Art Studio and Gallery, you’ll learn more about life in Cambodia today while admiring his impressive art – which Chhoeun uses to highlight the vulnerability of wildlife in the modern world – and enjoying tea and snacks. A local legend with immense talent and an inspirational story, this is an incredible experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Siem Reap - Phare Cambodian Circus
DAY 4
Cambodia is a country with a long history of circus tradition, with temple carvings dating back to the 6th century depicting circus performances, and the Phare Cambodian Circus is one of the best Cambodian circus performances available – certainly in Siem Reap. Offering you an entertaining taste of traditional Cambodian folklore and folk music alongside an extensive contemporary circus performance, where no animals are used, an evening spent here is always enjoyable. From astonishing acrobatics, contortion, and tightrope walking to mime, drama, and comedy, the Phare Cambodian Circus is the complete package when it comes to modern circus entertainment. 3Nt Mekong River Cruise to Phnom Penh
DAY 5-8
Travelling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh along the Mekong River is an incredibly rewarding experience, and this three-night river cruise will see you make this journey in complete comfort, with fantastic food, exciting evening entertainment, and days full of interesting excursions.
Here, you’ll have the chance to try Elephant Bar’s signature cocktail: the Femme Fatal. Named for and after Jacqueline Kennedy during her visit in 1967, this sweet strawberry-flavoured cocktail also includes champagne and cognac.

An impressive modern metropolis littered with remarkable historical landmarks, Phnom Penh is a spectacular city to stay in when visiting Cambodia; and, you’re going to be spending two nights in a hotel here while you explore some of its best bits. So, while you’re spending some time learning more about this countries’ culture and history, you’ll be fully immersed in the Cambodian capital.
