Iglu Cruise’s Senior Content Writer explored Amsterdam, Cologne, and Koblenz aboard Emerald Sun
Cruising is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding ways to travel the world right now, with cruises inviting you to explore some of the most exciting destinations around the world, from the Caribbean and the Mediterranean to Alaska, Asia, and beyond. When cruising, you’ll have the chance to travel in complete comfort, wanting for nothing, while you enjoy fantastic food and engaging entertainment, and make lasting memories.
If you’re browsing Iglu Cruise’s latest cruise deals and wondering what it’s like to embark on a Rhine river cruise, you should check out this cruise review from Kyle, Iglu Cruise’s Senior Content Writer. Recently, he visited Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz, and Ludwigshafen with Emerald River Cruises, spending several nights aboard Emerald Sun. Below, he's shared his expert opinion on this rewarding experience and insider tips worth keeping in mind when you embark on an adventure like this yourself.
What was your first impression of Emerald Sun?
Upon embarkation, I was pleasantly surprised at how stylish the interiors were, and at how spacious the public spaces felt despite the smaller size of the ship – much like most Europe-based river cruise ships. There was a quiet buzz onboard, with people embarking, and the service – despite dealing with people boarding and questions from every direction – was immediately excellent.

What destinations did you visit during your cruise?
Amsterdam, during an overnight stay, Cologne, Koblenz, and Ludwigshafen, with some scenic sailing through the Rhine Valley too!
Who would you recommend this ship to?
Apart from those travelling with children, I would recommend this ship to anyone and everyone. The atmosphere onboard was relaxed and casual, and there was ample opportunity to enjoy a few cocktails in the sunshine on the Sun Deck or a quiet coffee in the air-conditioned main lounge – whether you're travelling with a group of friends, someone special, or alone. Everyone onboard was friendly and open to conversation, too, which only made my time onboard more enjoyable.
Did you have a chance to see multiple cabin types? What were they like, and what’s one insider tip you’d like to share?
I did, though there isn't much difference between the suites I saw beyond their size; I found the Panorama Balcony Suite I was staying in to be more than big enough for what I needed, although if you want to spend more time enjoying the riverside scenery from your room, I would recommend booking a larger suite. This isn't really an insider tip, but I would recommend opening your retractable wall-to-wall window when you wake up, especially when sailing; there's nothing quite like the fresh air and fantastic landscapes first thing in the morning.

I forgot to take my own images of the stateroom, so here's a towel animal alongside some official snaps!
Did your accommodation have enough storage space for a full 7-night cruise?
Yes, ample space. With a wardrobe and numerous drawers, I feel as though there was more than enough room to store everything I would need. And, there's always under-bed space, too!
How was the noise inside your accommodation? Are there any areas you advise avoiding for those selecting their own cabin?
I was situated mid-ship and pleasantly surprised at the lack of noise. As a light sleeper who tends to stay up a little later than others, I was concerned, but I can't think of a single occasion when I was awoken by anything disruptive.
If you could only eat in one complimentary restaurant for the whole trip, which one would you choose, and what’s one must-try dish you recommend?
With only one real restaurant onboard, the choice is clear – however, that's nothing to frown about. The food, every mealtime, was excellent, and I found there was more than enough variety each day to ensure I wasn't having the same thing twice (except breakfast – who can pass up on a fresh full English?)

What about the speciality dining on Emerald Sun?
This ship didn’t have any speciality dining venues, but there’s a lot of fantastic food to enjoy in the main dining room.
If you had a drinks package, would you recommend it?
Yes, and definitely yes!
The Premium Drinks Package features a range of draught and bottled beers, wines by the glass, and an elevated selection of soft drinks and juices. Meanwhile, the Platinum Drinks Package also includes spirits and mixers, a comprehensive cocktail menu, and more.
What was the most surprising or under-the-radar activity that a first-time cruiser would miss?
The movie nights – in the evenings, the pool area transforms into a small cinema. It wasn't too popular on the cruise I was on, but I can definitely see why you'd want to spend an evening watching something there if traditional cruise-style general knowledge quizzes aren't your cup of tea!
What was the vibe of the pool deck onboard?
Relaxing retreat, although the pool area on Emerald Sun was less of a deck and more of a lounge – which I thought gave it a spa-like feel! The Sun Deck, though, was spacious and serene.

Did you check out the kids’ facilities available onboard? What were the highlights?
This cruise ship didn’t feature any facilities specifically aimed at younger cruisers.
Which destination was the biggest surprise, and why?
Koblenz, for the architecture. The area around Deutsches Eck, the German Corner, is stunning, and I found the walking tour I embarked on incredibly interesting.

Koblenz' German Corner, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, and St. Castor's Basilica
For those who prefer to explore independently, what’s the best thing to do within walking distance of the dock at your favourite destination?
Festung Ehrenbreitstein, in Koblenz. Accessible via cable car from just up the promenade from where we docked, this hilltop fortress was remarkable. Not only was the fortress itself fascinating, but the views of Koblenz and the surrounding scenery from atop the hill were breathtaking!
What was disembarking like?
Simple and stress-free. It was as easy as stepping off a bus, with only needing to tap your room key to 'sign in' or 'sign out'. Then, a short walk up/down a ramp and you're right there at your port of call, ready to explore.
Compared to other cruise experiences, what makes this one stand out? Where could it improve?
I think the service you enjoy onboard is what really makes this ship excel. When sailing on the Sun Deck, I was never once waiting for a drink, and during dinner, there was always an offer of a wine top-up when things were getting low. Everyone onboard was beyond helpful, and the cabin steward looking after our suite went above and beyond when it came to the daily cleaning.
What’s one bit of advice you would give someone booking this exact cruise that they won’t find in a brochure?
Don't stress about sailing days on your itinerary; unlike ocean cruises, sailing on river cruises is an event in and of itself. Not only are you enjoying a day relaxing in the sunshine, but you're also being given a chance to admire the breathtaking scenery you're sailing through. When we were sailing between Amsterdam and Cologne, during one of the most stunning sections of the Rhine Valley, the cruise director highlighted some interesting information about the passing castles and villages – so, it was basically like another tour!
