Iglu Cruise’s Head of Finance ventured to Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, and more aboard Costa Toscana
Cruising is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding ways to travel the world right now, with cruises inviting you to explore some of the most exciting destinations around the world, from the Caribbean and the Mediterranean to Alaska, Asia, and beyond. When cruising, you’ll have the chance to travel in complete comfort, wanting for nothing, while you enjoy fantastic food and engaging entertainment, and make lasting memories.
If you’re browsing Iglu Cruise’s latest cruise deals and wondering what it’s like to embark on a cruise through the Mediterranean, you should check out this cruise review from Alys, Iglu Cruise’s Head of Finance. Recently, she visited destinations like Genoa, Cagliari, and Naples with Costa Cruises, spending several nights aboard Costa Toscana. Below, she shared her expert opinion on this amazing experience and insider tips worth keeping in mind when you embark on an adventure like this yourself.
What was your first impression of Costa Toscana?
Very laid back and friendly, and the design was very colourful.

Who would you recommend this ship to?
I would recommend this ship to anybody who would enjoy a relaxed, chilled out experience onboard.
Did you have a chance to see multiple cabin types? What were they like, and what’s one insider tip you’d like to share?
No, just the cabin we were staying in.

Did your accommodation have enough storage space for a full 7-night cruise?
Definitely! However, the height of the hanging space meant the long dress got creased at the bottom as it was not tall enough.
How was the noise inside your accommodation? Are there any areas you advise avoiding for those selecting their own cabin?
I found this cruise to be one of the quietest I have been on. We were on deck 10, the rear of the ship, and hardly heard anyone! (mind you could have been because we were one of the later ones going to bed!) But even in the mornings, soundproofing was very good.
If you could only eat in one complimentary restaurant for the whole trip, which one would you choose, and what’s one must-try dish you recommend?
We ate at our assigned restaurant each night as the menu changed daily, so we never got bored, and the service and food were excellent!

If you had a drinks package, would you recommend it?
Yes, and yes.
What was the most surprising or under-the-radar activity that a first-time cruiser would miss?
On this ship, there were several different areas where live music took place as an alternative to the main shows, which were sometimes very busy.
What was the vibe of the pool deck onboard?
Relaxing retreat.

Did you check out the kids’ facilities available onboard? What were the highlights?
I wasn't able to check out any of the cruise ship's facilities specifically aimed at younger cruisers.
Which destination was the biggest surprise, and why?
Naples - never been to the home of pizza, and it's a totally bonkers city.

For those who prefer to explore independently, what’s the best thing to do within walking distance of the dock at your favourite destination?
The Naples city tour buses were a great way to see the sights.
What was disembarking like?
Very quick and easy - scanning in and out with our Costa Cards.
Compared to other cruise experiences, what makes this one stand out? Where could it improve?
Only been on 4, so difficult to really compare, but my sister and I loved the anonymity of not being surrounded by Brits and the staff's demeanour. Regarding improvements, I'd say to look at their spa pricing - €179 for a treatment! Consequently, we'd keep getting special offers posted through the door after the first few days. If they brought the price down, they probably wouldn't have to do so many offers!
What’s one bit of advice you would give someone booking this exact cruise that they won’t find in a brochure?
If you only want to mix with English speakers, this cruise probably isn’t for you.
