Things to do
Antisamos Beach
Antisamos Beach is known for its stunning landscape, which includes majestic, lush green hills surrounding a bay with crystal-clear, blue waves. It is a white pebbly beach (rock shoes required) famous for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, with vibrant beach bars, music, sunbeds, and water sports that are popular with both visitors and residents.
The Acropolis of Ancient Sami
The Acropolis of Ancient Sami, located on Lapitha Mountain, is a quiet, sometimes deserted archaeological monument with Cyclopean walls, old theatre remains, and panoramic views of Sami Bay and Ithaca. It provides a true, untamed ruins experience, frequently needing a four-hour walk or a steep, narrow vehicle to reach. Visitors may see stunning panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, Sami Bay, and the neighbouring island of Ithaca.
Melissani Lake
Melissani Lake (or Melissani Cave) is a breathtaking, partially collapsed subterranean cave with a 65-90 foot deep, crystal-clear turquoise lake. Visitors access a docking area via a long, man-made underground tunnel before embarking on a 15-minute rowboat excursion guided by rowers through the "B-shaped" cave. You see bright blue water, stalactites, and fantastic, glowing light effects. When the sun is directly overhead (12:00-14:00), it shines through the large, collapsed hole overhead, illuminating the lake and making boats appear to float in the air.
Harbour
The Sami waterfront is friendly, lively, and scenic with a long, broad promenade lined with palm trees, tavernas, and cafes overlooking the harbour and lush green mountains. It is frequently referred to as charming, combining classic Greek village charm with modern amenities. As a functional port, it attracts a bustling mix of ferry traffic, fishing boats, and luxury yachts, creating a welcoming and authentic Greek island vibe.
