DAY 6-7
18 Feb 2028
Time at Port: from 6 AM to 8 PM
The largest city on the Mediterranean Sea and the second-largest city in Egypt, Alexandria is a stunning holiday hotspot overflowing with incredible culture and a rich ancient history worth exploring when you arrive. A settlement founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and somewhere now known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, this city is known for being home to several ancient wonders – the Lighthouse of Alexandria and Great Library of Alexandria being among the most famous. So, whether you’re looking to soak up the sunshine on a public beach, or enjoy the warm weather with a table and a parasol umbrella on a more relaxed touristic beach, you’ll have plenty of options when you arrive.
Things to do in Alexandria - Overnight onboard:
Montaza Palace
A stunning site overlooking a beautiful beach, Montaza Palace is an impressive palace housing a unique museum and surrounded by extensive gardens. Originally built by Khedive Abbas II, the last Muhammad Ali Dynasty ruler of the region, in 1892 as a hunting lodge and residence for his companion, Montaza Palace was expanded upon by King Fuad I in 1932 and transformed into an elegant summer palace. Blending Ottoman and Florentine architectural styles, this is now an official presidential residence, with the palace being used as recently as 2011 by former president Hosni Mubarak. Both the surrounding gardens and the museum within are open to the public, with the museum focusing on the Muhammad Ali Dynasty family history and objects d’art collected over the years.
Serapeum of Alexandria
Often referred to as the daughter of the Great Library of Alexandria, and an ancient site that now lies in ruins, the Serapeum of Alexandria was an ancient Greek temple built during the reign of Ptolemy III Euergetes (246 BC to 222 BC). It was widely regarded as the largest, and most magnificent, of the temples in the Greek quarter of Alexandria and it also housed an offshoot collection of works from the Great Library of Alexandria until its closure in 392 AD. Largely destroyed by Roman soldiers the year before, and a site largely considered the final stronghold of the pagans during a series of riots, Pompey’s Pillar is the only notable structure remaining above ground on the site. An impressive column constructed circa 300 AD to celebrate Roman emperor Diocletian, it’s the only ancient monument in the city still standing in its original location.
Alexandria National Museum
Located in a renovated Italian-style palace which once housed the United States consulate, the Alexandria National Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history when visiting this remarkable city on the Mediterranean Sea. The building itself dates back to 1926 and was once used as an important meeting place for the affluent among Alexandria’s citizens. Housing around 1,800 artefacts with exhibitions and collections on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, alongside the Roman Empire and Alexandria’s more modern history throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, there’s a lot to learn about this city and Egypt as a whole in this former three-storey palace.

A welcoming destination where the new and the old exist harmoniously to create a truly unique adventure, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Alanya.
Things to do in Alanya:
Alanya Castle & the Red Tower
Built throughout the early 13th century, with completion recorded as 1226, Alanya Castle was constructed over Byzantine and Roman fortifications on an elevated rocky peninsula in the heart of Alanya. Once an active defensive fortification, Alanya castle was transformed into a residential area throughout the 19th century following the Ottoman Empire’s pacification of the region. Now, you can find an open-air museum within. Similarly, the Red Tower – which was also constructed by 1226 and designed to protect the shipyard here – now hosts the Museum of Alanya. It remains one of the best-preserved Seljuk structures in the city and a symbol of Alanya.
Kleopatra Beach
Named for Cleopatra VII, Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 BC to 30 BC and one of the most famous women in history, Kleopatra Beach is a stunning stretch of white-sand beachfront bordering on bright blue waters and the Mediterranean Sea. A stone’s throw from the heart of Alanya, and enjoying warm weather throughout the year, this beach is a great place for sun lounging and water sports alike. You’re not going to regret spending an afternoon soaking up the glorious Mediterranean sunshine here.
Damlatas Cave
An incredible beachfront cave system just a short distance from Alanya’s city centre, Damlatas Cave is home to an impressive abundance of stalactites and stalagmites formed over 15,000 years. Discovered largely by accident in 1948, the cave is said to be able to cure respiratory issues like asthma – with the cave itself being popularly known as the ‘asthma-cure cave’. With air in the cave containing a high percentage of carbon dioxide and consistently high humidity, there may be some truth to these claims. However, those who come for the cure spend four hours a day, every day for 21 days, in the cave itself.

We set sail from Cape Town. We loved Cape Town. The ship was comfortable and as our time sailing went on we warmed to the ship. Initially if I am honest I thought we had boarded a retirement home. But there were couples of all ages including one or two children. It is not really a ship for children there is nothing for them to do. However the food was lovely, the menu changed everyday apart from the stable basics which were always available. Breakfast could be served in your cabin every morning, the steward would lay the table with a white cloth in the cabin and lay breakfast out for you. So that was a lovely touch. Staff were all very helpful and pleasant and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Excursions were ok although I think very pricy. The Journey is a small ship and for a small ship the entertainment was good. Costume budget a little small but overall the entertainment was good. New years eve was a party on deck and was lovely however it ended a bit abruptly and should have carried on for a little longer past midnight. Christmas Brunch and New Years day brunch were all wonderful. The spread of food was so much you really did not know what to choose. I would sail with Azamara again depending on destination.

6-10 cruises
17 Jan 2026
Food was good and ship was very clean and and opulent in the public areas.
We did a back to back cruise with a large crew rotation halfway through.
We were on deck 8 in balcony stateroom for the first part of the cruise and apart from some black substance coming out of the shower all over me (washed off and reported) our stay in the stateroom was uneventful and we were looked after very well.
The Ship had a nice buzz to it as a lot of the crew were looking forward to going home for Christmas.
After the first part of the cruise the cruise was attracting close to top marks
For the second part of the cruise to keep costs down we relocated to deck 4 which turned out to be a issue.
We were surrounded on both sides by a very noisy family with young children.
What were Azamara thinking of when they allowed that to happen
We were subjected to screaming and banging late at night and eventually complained to reception who to be fair responded as best as they could.
The doors have very poor closing mechanisms which allow the doors to be slammed and that, alongside air pressure differental made for a very noisy enviroment.
The construction of the ship meant that the cabin shook every time this happened.
This coupled with some other issues meant that our stay on deck 4 was not great.
We were frankly, glad to get off the ship to the peace and quiet of the post cruise hotel.
As always on cruises the staff were fabulous and worked really hard to make sure the guests were looked after.
Although we are experienced cruisers
We have not been on an American cruise company ship and we did notice the difference in culture when dealing with the guests.
It felt very artificial considering the relatively small amount of guests onboard.
Bottom line nice ship with issues
Food was very good.
The vast majority of staff were great.
But the Itinary and experience did not live up to the Hype and cost.

15 Jan 2026
The Azamara Journey is a much smaller ship than I am used to which many people like but for me it is very limited . For a one week trip it is fine but for me there was not enough to do on sea days especilly as the weather was not too good.
Staff and Captain were excellent but I found the ship in need of a face lift and the cabins were dull with tiny shower rooms. The ship was able to go into smaller ports but they were not always interesting or had long transfer times to areas of interest.

I loved the Journey. I took the cruise after a very traumatic couple of years. All I needed was rest and relaxation sunshine, good company and a comfortable space to assimilate. I was touched by the overall friendliness onboard from staff to fellow passengers. Everything ran like clockwork and life became easy. I would recommend Azamara

An important intellectual and cultural centre throughout the Hellenistic age (which starts around 400 BC) to the start of the Middle Ages in the 8th century, the sightseeing experiences in Alexandria are among the most rewarding in the world. However, that’s far from the only thing to look forward to when it comes to visiting Alexandria via cruise; this city is home to some sensational seafood cuisine, boutique shopping experiences, and breathtaking beaches. You’ll have over 30 to choose from in Alexandria alone!

Now, you can find an open-air museum within. Similarly, the Red Tower – which was also constructed by 1226 and designed to protect the shipyard here – now hosts the Museum of Alanya. It remains one of the best-preserved Seljuk structures in the city and a symbol of Alanya.

With air in the cave containing a high percentage of carbon dioxide and consistently high humidity, there may be some truth to these claims.
