Not only will you learn more about the winemaking process here, but also what sets these wines apart from the rest.
Château ducal de Cadillac
Château ducal de Cadillac, the Ducal Castle of Cadillac, boasts a fascinating history and some impressive architecture, making it one of the most famous historic landmarks in the region and a must-visit when spending time in Cadillac-sur-Garonne. Constructed throughout the early 17th century, this impressive structure was once a formal residence for the Duke of Epernon, boasting impressive interiors that highlighted his wealth as a member of the French nobility favoured by the king. In the early 19th century, however, it was transformed into a women’s prison. The first women’s prison in France after the French Revolution, it was renowned for its poor conditions, though it remained active until 1952. Today, open for you to explore, the unique duality of this castle’s history is evident, making it a truly fascinating place to spend some time in.

Blaye, France
DAY 4
04 Aug 2027
Time at Port: TBD
Blaye, a charming town on the banks of the Gironde estuary, a waterway that connects the confluence of the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers with the Atlantic Ocean, is a hidden gem among these stunning destinations you’ll have the chance to visit when exploring France’s rivers. Historically, this town was a convenient place to cross the rivers of France for those travelling south to Bordeaux, or beyond to Spain and Portugal. Now, though, it’s somewhere where you can admire interesting architecture, indulge in delectable regional dishes, and immerse yourself in French culture. Blaye is a town dominated by medieval fortifications, with a trio of fortified citadels in the region constructed throughout the 17th century to defend Bordeaux from potential attack. Although, you’ll find ruins far older than that here, meaning there’s a lot more to uncover when it comes to this small town’s fascinating history. It’s not all about medieval forts, though; Blaye is home to a market every Wednesday and Saturday, as well as a springtime festival that boasts unmissable wine tastings and a variety of exciting events to get involved with. You’ll also find yourself with plenty of wonderful riverside walking routes to enjoy, with scenic landscapes in abundance.
Things to do in Blaye, France:
Château des Rudel
Château des Rudel is one of the most fascinating ruins in the region and has been fortified in some form since the 4th century. What you can see today when you visit is the remains of an atypical 18th-century fortification. Uniquely triangular, this castle features three main structures and six circular towers, all of which can be identified today despite its ruined state.
Citadelle de Blaye
Blaye’s most famous landmark and the town’s dominant feature, the Citadelle de Blaye, is a fortification built over the course of the 17th century to protect both Blaye and Bordeaux from naval attack. Designed by Vaubin, a famous military architect who developed a number of border fortifications throughout France under Louis XIV, this is among the most famous ‘fortifications of Vaubin’. It’s part of a trio of fortifications designed to defend this direct route to Bordeaux, joined by Fort Pâté on an island in the middle of the estuary and Fort Médoc in Cussac-Fort-Médoc.
Villa Gallo Romaine de Plassac
An incredible archaeological museum that presents and explores the historic artefacts found during excavations of the site, as well as the remains of the Gallo-Roman villas uncovered by archaeologists. Built between the 1st and 4th centuries, the museum here also displays fascinating murals and architectural decorations, surviving documents dating back to the 7th century, and more. This is located just outside of Blaye itself, but well worth the trip.
