Things to do
HMAS Sydney II Memorial
The HMAS Sydney II Memorial is a poignant, world class commemorative site located on Mount Scott, offering breathtaking panoramic views over Geraldton and the Indian Ocean. It honours the 645 sailors who lost their lives on November 19, 1941, during Australia's greatest naval tragedy when the ship sank after a fierce World War II battle with the German raider Kormoran. The memorial features several striking elements, including a Dome of Souls made from 645 stainless steel gulls, a bronze statue of a woman looking out to sea, and a magnificent stele representing the ship's prow. This deeply moving site serves as both a place of solemn remembrance and a historic beacon for visitors from around the world.
Hutt Lagoon
Hutt Lagoon is a striking marine salt lake located a short drive north of Geraldton, famous for its vivid pink waters. The surreal coloration is completely natural, caused by a specialised type of algae that thrives in highly salty environments. Depending on the cloud cover and the angle of the sun, the water constantly shifts in hue, transforming from a soft baby pink to a deep crimson red. Positioned right next to the coast, the lake provides a spectacular visual contrast against the nearby white sand dunes and the deep blue of the Indian Ocean. Visitors can easily view this unique landscape from the roadside or admire the full scale of its colors from a scenic flight.
St Francis Xavier Cathedral
The St Francis Xavier Cathedral is an impressive and unconventional landmark situated in the centre of Geraldton. Designed by the notable architect-priest Monsignor John Hawes, construction on the building began in 1916 and spanned over two decades. The final structure blends elements of Spanish-Mission, Byzantine, and Romanesque architecture, highlighted by a dramatic striped interior, massive stone arches, and a prominent central dome. It is widely considered one of the most distinctive religious buildings in the Southern Hemisphere and continues to attract visitors drawn to its unique design and heritage.
