Description
Muroran is a dramatic, industrial port city in southern Hokkaido, with a mix of heavy steel industry, magnificent coastal cliffs, and panoramic ocean vistas. As a historic steel manufacturing hub, the city has a gritty, industrial air, complete with apocalyptic vistas of steelworks near the port. Despite its industrial nature, the city is surrounded by stunning scenery, including the high, jagged cliffs of Cape Chikyu and the rocky shoreline near Tokkarisho Lookout. It has a natural horseshoe-shaped harbour, a famous suspension bridge, and is commonly described as a peaceful, working-class town.

Local Cuisine
Muroran cuisine is characterised by hearty, flavourful, and frequently "smoky" comfort dishes that reflect the city's heritage as a northern industrial steel town. Muroran's culinary identity is built around two pillars: Muroran Curry Ramen, the city's characteristic dish, which gained popularity in the 1960s. It consists of thick, curly noodles, sliced roasted pork, cabbage, bean sprouts, and seaweed in a rich, tangy curry-flavored broth. Muroran Yakitori, despite the name (which usually means "grilled chicken"), consists of pork shoulder or belly grilled with onions and covered in a sweet, savoury sauce, often served with mustard.
