Cruised the California coast from San Francisco and back, taking in Catalina Island, San Diego, LA and Ensenada in Mexico. All stops were worthwhile apart from Ensenada, which is a tourist trap selling the usual tourist stuff (would have preferred an additional US visit). The ship also sails under the Golden Gate Bridge.
Cruise ship is fine. Excellent service, food and evening entertainment. One area for improvement: please put more people on the Customer Services desk and set out a more organised system of queueing (there is always a muddled queue - same problem on the Diamond Princess, whom we have sailed with previously).
One other gripe is the ‘crew appreciation’ charges. These can add up and, whilst discretionary, you are really expected to pay them (this is an American cruise line). In effect, you are subsidising the employer’s wage bill. Compare this to P&O, for example, where they are not expected. Although, in theory, they are included in the booking price, which most Brits probably prefer.
Overall, a nice cruise offering good value for money. A lot of people combine this with a Las Vegas and San Francisco stay.

29 Oct 2025
It was our first time on a Princess cruise. Embarkation was very smooth. We had a lovely cabin, the bed and pillows were very comfortable. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. The evening entertainment was okay, not very varied and the shows only lasted 30 minutes. The shops were very expensive. There wasn't much choice of tours, we just did two. We loved the San Diego tour, the Los Angeles one was very limited. We felt the ship was more geared towards American guests, especially the quizzes. The decor of the ship was very traditional but well kept. We felt there was nothing special about the Gala Dinner. The menu seemed the same and there weren't any drinks provided. All in all though, we enjoyed our holiday.

23 Oct 2025
We had an enjoyable time on board Ruby Princess. The ship is looking dated in places especially the staterooms but that doesn't effect the holiday. We paid for the Princess plus package and it's definitely worth the money. The food was very nice however it was nearly always served lukewarm which is very frustrating. The entertainment onboard was lacking compared to P&O especially on sea days. We went to a couple of theatre shows but left early on both occasions, the first time because the singing was more like screeching and the second time was during the magician act which I thought had stepped out of the 80's. Extremely dated and boring, I'm not really into magic acts and when he came on stage with a top hat and tails and a twirling assistant I knew it wasn't for me. He then proceeded to cut a woman in half and have her floating on a board. Says it all really though some of the Americans seemed to love it, in fact whenever we walked passed the theatre it was full so the acts must be appealing to a lot of passengers just not us. It wouldn't stop us going on Princess cruises again and we enjoyed most of the ports. Just wish they could serve the food hot.
