Step back in time in this fascinating museum located in the heart of the city. Built in 1863, it’s home to a variety of exhibitions showcasing the enthralling history of Iceland, from its maritime past to artefacts capturing the life of original settlers within the country.

Situated in the centre of the city, Harpa is an extraordinary concert hall that features a distinct design with coloured glass surrounding its exterior. Host to a range of concerts, conferences, plays, opera performances and more, it’s a must-see when in the city.

Arguably one of the most beloved attractions in Iceland is the Blue Lagoon. Located less than 45 minutes from the city, it has a geothermal spa that’s bright blue. Onsite there is also a cafe, a massage room, restaurants and more to enjoy throughout your time there.

In 1973 the town was devastated by a volcanic eruption, and everyone on the island had to evacuate and leave their homes. The events of this historic eruption have been remembered within the Eldheimar Museum, which showcases buildings that were destroyed, facts about the eruption and other fascinating information.

Overlooking the town, Eldfell Mountain was created due to the aforementioned eruption. Now, you can hike to the top of this picturesque mountain and take in views out over 720 ft. With many trails to choose from, it’s the perfect opportunity to discover the beauty of the island and see the remains of several buildings that were destroyed by the lava.

The Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary is situated in Klettsvik Bay. You can visit the sanctuary by taking a boat trip from the main harbour. Home to two rescued beluga whales, you can learn about their past and what it takes to care for these incredible creatures.

Whilst in Djupivogur, head to the Gallery Freevilli - a significant art gallery in the town that’s housed in a vibrant red building. Full of arts and crafts made from things found on the shore (including objects made out of fish skeletons), this unique and free gallery is worth a visit.

Situated on a hill on the outskirts of the town, the Bondavaroa offers incredible views out towards the surrounding fjord. A fun and picturesque hiking trail, the view that you’ll be granted with from the observation deck is great for those wanting to see all the local landmarks.

Located in the heart of the town, the colourful Djupivogur Mural makes for a great photo opportunity whilst stopping off in the town and is a significant local attraction.

Despite technically being known as New Slains Castle, in order to distinguish it from Old Slains Castle, Slains Castle is a 16th-century ruin in Cruden Bay, just a short drive from the city of Aberdeen itself. Built by the 9th Earl of Erroll, the castle itself is featured in Bram Stoker’s The Watter’s Mou and The Mystery of the Sea, and it’s believed that parts of the castle provided a visual palette for Stoker’s Dracula – an octagonal hall, particularly, features in the novel.

The oldest surviving town hours in Aberdeen, Provost Skene’s House – which was first constructed circa 1545 – is a museum on local history and prominent figures in popular culture who were born, lived, or worked in Aberdeen. While it was remodeled slightly in the mid-18th century, this is a fantastic example of Aberdeen’s unique burgh architectural style and offers an interesting insight into the period.

In Old Aberdeen, St. Machar’s Cathedral was founded as a site of worship in around 580 – with a Norman cathedral replacing the original church circa 1131 before being rebuilt and repaired numerous times over the years. The current church, which is actually a high kirk (not a cathedral), is primarily 17th century, but remains an important cultural landmark and a stunning structure. Reportedly, the left quarter of William Wallace was buried in the walls of the cathedral following his execution in 1305.

One of Rotterdam's most well-known landmarks is the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen). These residential sets of buildings, created by Dutch architect Piet Blom, stand out because each home is cube-shaped. A unique place to visit whilst in Rotterdam, you can learn ore about the cube houses by visiting the Show Cube Museum.

Designed by architect Maaskant, this 185-metre tower is one of the tallest buildings in Holland. Step into the elevator and head up the tower to enjoy breathtaking views over Rotterdam; and if it’s a clear day, you can even see the city of Antwerp in the distance.

An iconic landmark in Rotterdam, the Erasmusbrug Bridge was constructed in 1986 and connects the north and south of the city. A striking feat of engineering, it’s surrounded by cafes, restaurants and hotels.

Nidaros Cathedral is located in the heart of Trondheim, and is constructed over the burial site of the prominent ruler, King Olav II (who is also known as the patron saint of the nation of Norway). Beautiful in design, it’s one of the most popular and iconic landmarks in the city.

Also known as Gamble Bybro, this historic bridge was built in 1861 and was designed by Carl Adolf Dahl. Featuring red, decorative arches, it’s often a popular photo spot due to the surrounding colourful houses.

Situated on a hill, to the east of Trondheim, the Kristiansten Fortress gained its name from Christian V of Denmark and Norway. Built in 1685, this prominent and unique fortress will make you feel as though you’ve been transported back in time.

The church, which was constructed in the Neo-Gothic style, holds a prominent place in the community. After World War II, the people lived in the building, which was built in 1885, while the other buildings were being rebuilt.

Also known as Nordkappmuseet, the museum is home to an array of exhibitions, from temporary art displays with pieces created by both local and international artists to information about how the area has developed since the Stone Age and permanent displays covering marine development. Showcasing the cultural heritage of the area, it’s frequently listed as the top things to do in Honningsvag.

A popular performing arts centre, it’s housed within a traditional Nordic house that was rebuilt after the war. See an array of performances here during your stop off, from comedy shows to dramas.

The Polar Museum is a prominent attraction in Tromso which conveys exhibits showcasing the history of Tromso and the Arctic. Within the museum you’ll find exhibitions about winter trapping, sealing and illustrious characters such as Wanny Wolstad and Henry Rudi. Situated within a colourful 1830s warehouse on the seafront, it also features a museum shop.

Perhaps the most iconic landmark in Tromso, the Arctic Cathedral (also known as the Tromsdalen Church) is situated close to the Tromso Bridge and the Tromsdalstinden Peak. An active parish church, it has unique architecture and was built in 1965.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for breathtaking views over Tromso, head up the Fjellheisen cable car. A dual-gondola cable car, it soars high above the city and up Storsteinen mountain.

Haukland Beach on the Lofoten archipelago is likely the most well-known sandy beach in the region, and is a beloved destination for those who want to hike for incredible views out over the surroundings or those wanting to relax and unwind on the beach. And the moment you arrive there, you'll understand why. Only a few minutes' drive from Leknes, a trip out to this beautiful beach is well worth the effort.

Another attraction within easy reach is the Buksnes Church. This picturesque parish serves the town of Gravdal and is unique in its design. A wooden structure, it has an impressive colourful interior and beautiful surroundings.

Less than a 10 minute drive away lies Offersoykammen, a mountain peak with a summit that grants views out over the island. With several popular trails taking you to the top (usually taking between 1-2 hours), the hike is a great introduction to what the breathtaking Lofoten Islands have to offer.

The regional museum for North Moorish cultural history, the Nordmore Museum includes both cultural and natural history collections, and is a member of the nationwide museum network.

Standing at an impressive 78 metres above sea level, Varden viewpoint is the highest point in the town. A short 15 minute walk from the city centre, it was originally used as a watch tower to guard the city from invaders and was built in 1964.

The only in-use shipbuilding museum in the country, this historic building was built in 1856 and has only had a few renovations made to it throughout the years.
