DAY 56
A journey to the remarkable city of Chengdu wouldn’t quite be complete without a visit to the vital Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding; so, that’s where you’re going to be spending most of your day – and you’re in for a truly special experience. Home to over 200 giant pandas (a vulnerable species heavily reliant on conservation efforts for its survival), a small number of red pandas, and a small selection of other endangered species endemic to China, this government-funded non-profit conservation centre plays an important role in preserving giant pandas as a species. While you’re here, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the important work the Chengdu Research Base is doing, to observe these magical mammals in enclosures that near-mirror their natural habitat, and to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Giant pandas are fairly solitary creatures, who often spend most of the day sleeping, so each sighting during your visit will be truly special.
Things to see:
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
A unique government-funded non-profit breeding and research institution, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was founded in 1987 with the express goal of improving the giant panda population in China and becoming a world-class research facility, conservation centre, and international education destination; starting with just six giant pandas, all of which were rescued from the wild, the Chengdu Research Base is now home to over 200 giant pandas.
Giant Panda
A truly remarkable animal considered ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and largely reliant on the conservation efforts of organisations like the Chengdu Research Base for its survival, these black-and-white bears are often seen as a national symbol of China – to which they are endemic.
Red Panda
Small mammals considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, red pandas are actually more closely related to raccoons and skunks than they are the giant panda; however, they also primarily feed on bamboo shoots and leaves, and they’re known for their reddish-brown fur, black bellies, and white muzzle.

Our first time on Queen Anne but not first time on Cunard as we have sailed on all four ships now and Cunard is our favourite cruise line. We very much liked the Queen Anne and enjoyed our cruise very much. The theatre was very impressive. We enjoyed the company of our fellow guests who were all very friendly. We have booked a further cruise on the Queen Anne for September this year and look forward to that very much.

Chengdu - Panda Conservation Centre
DAY 56
A journey to the remarkable city of Chengdu wouldn’t quite be complete without a visit to the vital Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding; so, that’s where you’re going to be spending most of your day – and you’re in for a truly special experience.

DAY 60
Spending your day in Shanghai is always rewarding and this tour is no exception. An experience that combines a walking tour of the sensational Yu Gardens – home to a variety of rock formations and ponds alongside the enigmatic Exquisite Jade Rock – with a stroll along The Bund – a stunning section of Shanghai’s waterfront lined with impressive neoclassical architecture – you’ll have the chance to explore Shanghai’s history during the Ming Dynasty alongside its colonial history. A dramatic contrast that makes this city one of the most unique in the Far East, this tour will also include a stop at the Shanghai Museum. Home to thousands of pieces of ancient Chinese art, you’ll find some of the rarest surviving items from the Northern Song dynasty here among artefacts from the Zhou, Tang, and Ming dynasties.

Shanghai Museum
An impressive museum of ancient Chinese art that’s home to over 120,000 pieces of historical importance, the Shanghai Museum features collections of furniture from the Qing and Ming dynasties, intricate Chinese ceramics, ancient Chinese paintings, and more.
The Bund
Running along the western bank of the Huangpu River, this section of Shanghai’s waterfront has significant European influence with Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Renaissance architecture on display; at the height of European colonialism, from the 1860s to the 1930s, this was the rich and powerful centre of the foreign establishment in the city, and is now home to the historic Shanghai Club building, the Custom House, and more.
