A stunning stretch of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan’s four main islands, the Kanmon Straits (which are also known as the Straits of Shimonoseki) are surprisingly narrow for the number of ships (around 700 on an average day) that take advantage of this waterway daily. Playing an important role in Japan’s naval history, with numerous battles between Japan and the US taking place here throughout the Shimonoseki Campaign in 1863, cruising through this stretch of water will afford you the opportunity to admire the stunning scenery of both Japanese islands at the same time. Every August, the Kanmon Strait plays host to the largest firework display in Japan, where more than 13,000 fireworks are launched from both sides of the strait into the night sky.
Scenic Cruising Kanmon Straits:
Mekari Shrine
A Shinto shrine established circa 200 in Kitakyushu, Mekari Shrine is visible from the Kanmon Straits; built by Empress Jingu after her visit during the legendary Korean invasion in the 3rd century, the shrine was built as thanks to the Kami. Dannoura Battlefield
This slender stretch of greenspace in Mimosusogawa Park, which is visible from the Kanmon Straits, features several statues representing the warring Heike and Genji clans – prominent clans who fought each other during a major sea battle in 1185 during the Genpei War. While legends vary on the number of ships and fighters involved, the Heike clan (which was known as the Taira clan) was decimated as a result and the Genji clan (known as the Minamoto clan) gained control of Japan as a result.
Kanmon Bridge
Opened in 1973, you’ll pass under Kanmon Bridge as you sail the Kanmon Straits. Among the world’s longest suspension bridges, stretching over 3,500 feet across the waterway, Kanmon Bridge connects Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu.

The whole experience and organisation from Iglu Cruise was excellent. Transport and hotel in Tokyo perfect choice and the cruise itself on Diamond Princess was excellent. Staterooms are much larger than other cruise ships we have been on with lots of storage and wardrobe space. Food and drink top quality and the ports we called at gave a varied and interesting look at Japan and South Korea. Would recommend Iglu Cruise and the Diamond Princess

Japan is amazing!! We had to divert from the expected route due to the typhoon, the Captain kept us informed of the situation which was very helpful.
Diamond Princess is an older ship, the staff are amazing, food choice was great and of a high standard.
The organisation to the usual high standard for Princess. We had a wonderful time.

Scenic Cruising Kanmon Straits
DAY 16
23 Oct 2026
Time at Port: TBD
The structure we see today was built in 1767 by the Ogasawara clan, and the Mekari Shinji ritual is observed here every year for good luck.

Also known as Carp Castle, Hiroshima Castle was built in the late 16th century and was one of the largest castles in the country. However, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb, leading to it having to be rebuilt.
