The Taurine Baths - a Roman archaeological site dating back to the 1st century BC - are located around 4km from the urban centre of Civitavecchia. There is a legend that says the baths came to be after a bull scraped at the ground before a fight, and in doing so uncovered a hot water spring.

The construction of the Michelangelo Fort began in 1508 and ended in 1537. The structure of the fortress, in true Renaissance style, has the shape of a quadrilateral with a tower in each corner, and the central tower has an octagonal layout. Its creation was ordered by Pope Julius II, to defend the Port of Civitavecchia against pirates and any other hostile encounters.

The Cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi is the most important church of Civitavecchia. Dating back to the 17th century and completely restored in 1950, it has a Baroque style and stands on the remains of a previous Franciscan church.

Savona is one of the main Italian cities in which the Art Nouveau style developed. Villa Zanelli, built in 1907, represents one of the main masterpieces of this artistic movement in Italy. It is located on the beach of the Legino district and can be seen by visitors as they walk by on the sand.

Bergeggi is a historic village in the province of Savona, about 110 meters above sea level. Just off the mainland is the island of the same name, also known as Isola di Sant’Eugenio, ideal those who love diving and exploring marine fauna and flora.

The Sistine Chapel, not to be confused with the chapel of the same name in the Vatican City, was built at the end of the fifteenth century at the behest of Pope Sixtus IV - to whom it owes its name. It was designed as a tomb for the noble Della Rovere family of Savona.

The construction of the Priamar Fortress began in 1542, and takes its name from the hill on which it stands. It was built and then expanded at the behest of the Republic of Genoa, with the aim of bringing the city of Savona under full control.

Located on a small island at the end of La Caleta beach, this remarkable historical site was once home to a Temple of Kronos – a Titan among the Greek gods, and father of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. The castle we see today was built circa 1706 in order to provide the northern flank of the city with defence, and the levee linking the island to the city was constructed in 1860. This castle was also the site of Spain’s second electric-powered lighthouse, which was added to the structures on this island in 1908.

An impressive plaza in Parque de Maria Luisa in Seville, Plaza de España is a remarkable landmark example of Regionalism architecture – blending the Baroque Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Moorish Revival styles together. Completed in 1928, this stunning area was featured in exterior shots of the City of Theed on Naboo in Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones and scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, among other film and TV productions – something that only exemplifies its incredible beauty.

A historic royal palace in the heart of Seville, which was once an Islamic-era citadel in the 10th century before eventually being expanded upon and rebuilt throughout the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries, the Royal Alcázar of Seville is an impressive example of Mudejar-style architecture but draws on Gothic and Renaissance elements, giving it a unique character among other palaces in the region. When the royal family are visiting Seville, they still occupy the upper stories of the alcázar to this day – though, you can also explore this area when they’re not in town. Jutting out dramatically into the South Atlantic Ocean, the Cape of Good Hope is a breathtakingly beautiful natural landmark boasting incredible coastline views, sensational wildlife spotting opportunities, and an interesting history worth taking the time to learn more about – and, it’s a peninsula that’s commonly mistaken for being the southernmost point in Africa, but that’s actually Cape Agulhas, which is about 150 km eastwards. When it was first discovered by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, this rocky headland was known as the Cape of Storms, but John II of Portugal renamed it the Cape of Good Hope in an effort to reflect the incredible optimism borne out of having an open sea route to India and the East. When you’re here, you’ll have the chance to see everything from ostrich and chacma baboons to African penguins and more; so, it’s definitely worth bringing a pair of binoculars when visiting.

Getting its name from the granite boulders that surround it, Boulders Beach is located on the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. Not only is this beach incredibly scenic, but it’s also a popular place to visit because of the thriving colony of African penguins that call it home.

Found in New Brighton shack settlement, a township just north of central Port Elizabeth, this museum is dedicated to the South African peoples’ struggle against Apartheid; within, you’ll find an auditorium, art gallery, memorial space, and more. One of the largest national parks in South Africa, Addo Elephant National Park is a diverse conservation park and nature reserve just north of Port Elizabeth. While known for its elephant colony, which is over 600 elephants strong, you’ll also find a variety of South African wildlife species here – from lions and leopards to hyenas and zebras. It’s also home to several-hundred Cape buffalos, endangered black rhinos, and a wide variety of flora.
