Cape Town Malay Quarters
Also known as the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town’s Malay Quarters are a colourful neighbourhood with an important history. Formerly a racially segregated area, and the historical heart of the Cape Malay culture in Cape Town, this area of Cape Town boasts the largest concentration of pre-1850 architecture in South Africa, with some of the oldest-surviving residential structures still being used to this day.
Castle of Good Hope
Once on the coastline, but now inland following land reclamation around the Table Bay area, the Castle of Good Hope is a remarkable 17th century bastion fort regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of a Dutch East India Company fortification in the world. Constructed in a distinct pentagonal shape, the outline of this castle’s walls was once used on South African Defence Force flags and rank insignia, further highlighting its importance as a national landmark.
Robben Island
A stunning oval-shaped island in Table Bay, which is just north of Cape Town, Robben Island boasts a remarkable – albeit troubled – history; fortified as a prison island throughout the mid-17th century, it’s perhaps most known in recent history as where political activist Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years during South Africa’s postwar apartheid state. Things to see:
Boulders Penguin Colony
Boulders Bay is one of the best places in the world to see African penguins in the wild, and a visit to the Boulders Penguin Colony is a must for anyone exploring Cape Town in South Africa. Reportedly originally settling in this area in 1982, the dwindling population of African penguins can be found on a stretch of three pristine beaches in Simon’s Town, which is within Cape Town; while here, you can observe these remarkable birds from specially-built boardwalk walkways, something that has been introduced to continue protecting the colony from human influence. Known for their dramatic black and white plumage, and for having small pink glands above their eyes, these unique penguins are best-spotted during the Summer months. Although, you’ll still spy a few of them throughout the year, should you visit at another time.
Chapman’s Peak Drive
Stretching from Hout Bay to Noordhoek, along the Atlantic coastline, Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most stunning scenic drives in the world; constructed during the First World War, this roadway runs for around 9km and features 114 twists and turns. While only around half an hour, this must-experience drive is truly unforgettable – the breathtaking views of the coastline here are unlike anything else in the world.
Cape of Good Hope
Jutting out dramatically into the South Atlantic Ocean, the Cape of Good Hope is a breathtakingly beautiful natural landmark boasting incredible coastline views, sensational wildlife spotting opportunities, and an interesting history worth taking the time to learn more about – and, it’s a peninsula that’s commonly mistaken for being the southernmost point in Africa, but that’s actually Cape Agulhas, which is about 150 km eastwards. When it was first discovered by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, this rocky headland was known as the Cape of Storms, but John II of Portugal renamed it the Cape of Good Hope in an effort to reflect the incredible optimism borne out of having an open sea route to India and the East. When you’re here, you’ll have the chance to see everything from ostrich and chacma baboons to African penguins and more; so, it’s definitely worth bringing a pair of binoculars when visiting.

Cape Winelands Tour
DAY 5
Time at Port: TBD
From flavour-rich reds to crisp whites, South Africa is known for producing a spectacular selection of wines, and today you’ll have the chance to spend some time exploring some of the most stunning winelands in the world with visits to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. An area as rich in history as it is natural beauty, your day will afford you ample opportunity to explore both historic towns and include two different wine tasting experiences. Things to see:
Huguenot Monument
Found in the heart of Franschhoek, the Huguenot Monument is an impressive landmark dedicated to the cultural influences of the Huguenot refugees who immigrated into the Cape Colony throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Primarily fleeing the religious persecution of Roman Catholic France, this monument was completed in 1945 and features three arches – which symbolise the Holy Trinity – and a female figure – which symbolises religious freedom.
Helshoogte Mountain Pass
A winding roadway that connects Stellenbosch with Pniel and Franschhoek, the Helshoogte Mountain Pass is one of the most stunning ways to traverse this mountainous region. The original Helshoogte Pass is the oldest in South Africa, dating back to the late 17th century, and was important to the Huguenot population in Franschhoek. For many years, it was known for being a dangerous route, particularly in the dark; however, now that it isn’t the main route to Franschhoek, it’s actually one of the most scenic cycling routes in the region.
Franschhoek
A charming town just east of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek is famed for many things – and regarded as one of the best places to visit in the world, even if just for a short time. Home to the impressive Huguenot Monument, and surrounded by vibrant rolling vineyard-covered hills, it’s easy to appreciate that this is one of the oldest towns in South Africa when you arrive. Interestingly, it was once known as Oliphants Hoek, due to the impressive number of elephants roaming the valley around the settlement; though, this was changed when the French Huguenot refugees populated the region in the late 17th century.

Unfortunately, our experience on the Costa Smeralda was overshadowed by a very disappointing and misleading situation with the onboard photo service. My husband and I were told by staff that for 229 euros we would receive a photo package that included both printed and digital photos. Based on this explanation, we agreed and paid in full.
After taking our money, the situation completely changed. We were given only about three usable photo of myself, while the photos of my husband were given to us. When I asked for the single photo of myself, we were then told I would have to pay an additional 22 euros per photo. This was never explained upfront and directly contradicted what we were originally promised.
This felt extremely misleading and unfair. We trusted what we were told, only to find out later that the terms had changed after payment was taken. Instead of feeling excited about having special memories from our cruise, we left feeling frustrated and taken advantage of.
For a cruise line of this size and reputation, this kind of practice is unacceptable. Transparency and honesty matter, especially when guests are already paying premium prices. This experience seriously impacted our overall impression of the cruise, and I hope Costa addresses this so future guests are not treated the same way.

Whilst the cruise did not have a lot of British passengers onboard, we had a superb time. Cabin was spotless and roomy. Service by all staff was first class. Food was amazing at all times with nothing we thought was bad. Entertainment was some of the best we have seen at sea. We will definitely be going back with Costa again. Ignore all of the bad press and reviews as it's not as bad as people make out. Fantastic well designed ship.

Ship was amazing and clean. Staff worked hard but didn't have time to give guests the same level of attention that you receive with other cruise lines . Restaurant food was hit and miss . Overall good value for money

Cape Town City Tour, Robben Island & Table Mountain
DAY 3
Time at Port: TBD
The capital of South Africa is famous for so many things, and it’s time to explore some of this remarkable city’s history and culture – before venturing up to Table Mountain, a wondrous natural landmark boasting breathtaking views of Cape Town and South Africa’s south-western coastline. In the morning, you’ll be collected from your hotel accommodation and whisked away on a driven tour of some of this city’s most impressive landmarks and culturally important locations. From Cape Town’s impressive Parliament Building and historic Slave Lodge, to the imposing Castle of Good Hope and colourful Malay Quarter, this tour will give you a chance to admire all of the incredible sights this city has to offer; though, that really is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what this day has in store. Following this sightseeing experience, you’ll have the chance to visit the Robben Island Museum; an insightful experience, you’ll visit one of the world’s most famous prisons and learn more about South Africa’s history with apartheid and what life was like for political prisoners held here. With many of the tour guides actually former political prisoners, this is the most authentic way to learn more about this troubling period of South Africa’s history. Your tour doesn’t quite end on that note, though. Before the day is done, you’ll also have the chance to venture up to the top of Table Mountain, which boasts truly awe-inspiring views of Cape Town and the surrounding landscape. With a restaurant here, and a curio shop for souvenirs, you’ll have some time to explore – or enjoy some authentic South African cuisine with an unforgettable view.
Things to see:
Beyond this, though, and the fascinating living history museum here, Robben Island is a fantastic place to spot wildlife. When visiting, you’ll have the chance to spot African penguins, several buck species, Cape fur seals, and more.

Sounds exciting, right? Well, now it’s your time to immerse yourself in the majesty of this magnificent region; on this day of your tour package, you’ll have the chance to explore Cape Peninsula and its most iconic sights yourself. While the specific order of the day will vary, and some things are weather dependent, as this part of South Africa can sometimes experience strong winds and heavy rainfall, this comprehensive tour will see you embark on a cruise to Duiker Island, which is home to thousands of Cape fur seals, travel along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world, and visit the African penguin colony at Boulders Bay. You’re also going to have the opportunity to visit Cape Point at the Cape of Good Hope – venturing up to an old lighthouse with breathtaking panoramic views on the Flying Dutchman Funicular railway. Declared ‘The Fairest Cape in all the World’ by famous explorer Sir Francis Drake, you’ll experience first-hand why that statement is still accurate today; rich in remarkable wildlife and breathtaking natural beauty, this really is a stunning place to spend some time. During your day exploring the Cape Peninsula and Cape Town, you’ll stop for lunch at Bertha’s Restaurant in Simon’s Town; boasting an extensive menu of authentic South African cuisine, and fantastic views of the quayside and False Bay, this will be one lunch you’ll want to savour. Just off of the Historical Mile here, you’ll also have a chance to learn more about the naval history of Simon’s Town, which is where the South African Navy has called home since 1957.

In Franschhoek, you’ll be met with gourmet cuisine and the intriguing history of South Africa’s Huguenot refugees. Meanwhile, in Stellenbosch, you’ll encounter an abundance of historic Cape Dutch architecture, boutique shopping experiences, and some stunning views. A day of insightful learnings, and indulgence, this Cape Winelands Tour is worth looking forward to – even if you’re not the biggest fan of wine, you may just stumble onto a bottle that suits your palette.
