It’s time to embark on an unmissable adventure in Welgevonden Game Reserve. This afternoon, while staying in a nearby lodge, you’ll be invited on a sensational game drive through this incredible area of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. Home to some of South Africa’s most remarkable animals, including the ‘Big Five’ (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos), as well as cheetah, hyena, zebra, wildebeest, and so much more, this private nature reserve affords you the unique opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. Welgevonden Game Reserve, in particular, is home to one of Africa’s largest populations of white rhinos, and rare species such as aardvarks and pangolins have also been spotted here. With a limit to the number of active vehicles at any one time, these game drives are also an uncrowded experience, giving you plenty of space to observe the incredible wildlife here uninterrupted while prioritising the welfare of the wildlife and environment around you. Here, on immersive game drives led by experienced field guides, you follow nature’s rhythm and let the wild take centre stage. It’s an incredible experience that will stick with you for years to come.

Things to do
‘Big Five’ Wildlife Safari
Home to a whole host of sensational safari animals, Welgevonden Game Reserve is one place where you’ll be able to observe South Africa’s ‘Big Five’ in their natural habitat. A term initially coined by big-game hunters, the ‘Big Five’ features lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo. With this nature reserve home to one of Africa’s largest populations of white rhino, you’re not going to want to miss a moment of this incredible experience.
South African Giraffe
Covered hoof to horn – which is a long way – with dark, rounded splotches, the South African Giraffe is easily the tallest animal you’ll have the chance to observe when exploring Welgevonden Game Reserve on a game drive. Often found feeding on comparatively low-hanging leaves, flowers, and fruits, you shouldn’t have too much trouble spotting the slender necks of these remarkable creatures while led by an experienced field guide.
Plains Zebra
Plains Zebra, the most common species of zebra found in South Africa, is just one of the species you’ll have the chance of observing during a game drive through Welgevonden Game Reserve. Boasting broader stripes than the larger Grevy’s Zebra and smaller Mountain Zebra, these animals are a striking sight to behold at any distance. A highly social species that often travels in groups, while also preserving open grassland to thick bush, you should have no trouble spotting some of these during your game drive experience.
