Amalfi is a picturesque town of about 5,000 inhabitants. It was founded by the Romans in the 5th century and was, in medieval times, one of the four Maritime Republics (together with Genoa, Pisa, and Venice) competing for control of the Mediterranean. Despite its small size, Amalfi and its surroundings offer many places to visit: the Duomo, the Paper Museum, Villa Rufolo and the Emerald Grotto are just some of them.
Things to do in Amalfi:
Amalfi Cathedral
The construction of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, also known as the Cathedral of Amalfi, began in the year 987 at the behest of Duke Mansone I. It is said that St. Francis of Assisi went there in 1218 to honour the relics of St. Andrew the Apostle, which are kept here.
Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, due to its incredible natural beauty. It overlooks the Gulf of Salerno and includes the stretch from Positano to Vietri sul Mare, totalling around 50 km.
Cloister del Paradiso
The Cloister del Paradiso is part of the Cathedral of Amalfi. It was built between 1266 and 1268 as a cemetery for high-standing citizens. The structure, in Moorish style, has an internal garden - probably dating back to the 20th century - and 120 columns.
Grotto dello Smeraldo
The Emerald Grotto was discovered in 1932. It is a gorgeous, natural location in which shimmering water sits calmly in an intricate cave. The grotto owes its name to the shades that the water takes on due to the sunlight that filters through from above. It is directly connected to the Tyrrhenian Sea, and can be accessed by sea or by land.
Museum of Paper
The former paper mill of Amalfi was transformed into today's Museo della Carta in 1969, thanks to Nicola Milano, its owner. You can admire the machinery and equipment, still working, used in the past to make paper by hand.
Villa Rufolo
Villa Rufolo is located in the town of Ravello, about 7 km from Amalfi. The property dates back to the 13th century and underwent a substantial restoration in the 19th century. Today, visitors to the villa will see the Arab-Norman style architecture, and can admire the beautiful gardens. The lower garden hosts the Ravello festival every year.

The city's main square bears the name of the poet and, with its typical bars and restaurants, represents the centre of Sorrento's social scene.

Cathedral of Sorrento
The Cathedral of Sorrento, located on the Bishop's Plaza (or piazza del vescovado in Italian), was built on the remains of an ancient Greek temple. Construction began in the 10th century and the church was consecrated in 1113. The neo-Gothic facade dates back to the 20th century.
Marina Grande
Marina Grande is the ancient fishing village of Sorrento. It’s been used as a film set for several Italian films in the 1950s, and is now a tourist resort that offers incredible views of the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the Capo di Sorrento coast.
Piazza Tasso
Piazza Tasso is the main square of Sorrento. It is named after Torquato Tasso, a 16th-century Italian poet who penned the well-known epic poem, 'Jerusalem Delivered", to which a statue is dedicated. Another statue, located in the centre of the square, depicts Antonino da Campagna - the patron saint of the city.
Positano Beach
Positano is one of the most fascinating and attractive stretches of the Sorrento peninsula - and indeed the entire Amalfi coast. It is located between Capo Sottile and Punta Germano. One stand out attraction here is the luxurious Roman Villa from the 1st century BC. This is believed to have been built for a freed slave called Posides Claudi Caesari, and can be visited by tourists today.

Tips

Wi-Fi is available onboard for an additional fee. Guests can purchase internet packages to stay connected during their voyage. There are three plans to choose from starting 18 Euros for the 1 GB plan.

Everything was great. Only criticism was the excursions which could not be booked until we got on the ship and then they were over subscribed. Arrangements were finally made to fulfill everyone's wishes but it was very chaotic. We were very pleased with the taxi driver who met us at the airport in Athens. If it hadn’t been for him our first day would have been wasted and we would have not seen the Acropolis and museum but by talking with him, arrangements were made to take us and the get us back to the port in plenty of time to embark the ship. This should have been made clearer to make sure the best advantage was taken of our time in Athens. There would not have been time on our return journey.

We wanted to try the small boat experience. Wind in the sails etc. Freedom. What happened was unexpected and not very good. Worse parts first I think - which may take a while. The sails only went up when the boat was becalmed and not moving. Then only for short periods to take photos.So travel was by engine - noisy and smelly. We missed one important port due to weather conditions. Larger boats didn't have this problem. The substitute port was of no interest to us. Little to see, no maps or information. No excursions organised or even ideas on what to do or see. There was no time or research or plan. We were just dumped. No internet access to research ourselves. Lack of professionalism and unfriendly staff. It was obvious that no one really cared if we had a pleasant voyage. The staff were terrible in some cases. There was a lack of language proficiency. German was the main language. English and French and other speakers were badly treated. There was a large group of German travel agents onboard and all efforts were made to make them happy. The staff ignored the rest of us. There was no "sail away" from ports with music and sails. On departure from Athens it was pitch black on deck. Very crowded and no one could see or knew what was happening. I think I could vaguely hear the famous Vangelis music but although I walked around the deck it didn't get any louder. Staff were only there to sell champagne. The dining room was too cramped and full. Staff canteen feeling. Staff didn't engage with passengers, We sat with a delightful French couple one night and tried to find other french speakers for them. Asked the Maitre D' but he didn't bother to even think about it. Summed up the voyage I've saved the worst for last. Embarkation was easy but we were told to wait on deck for the safety talk. I'm guessing that the cabins weren't ready and they wanted to "manage" us there. Waited and waited. Sickly cheap drink offered. Eventually gave up and found our cabin. No map or introduction to the boat or schedule was given to us on day 1. Staff were here and there but no talking or engaging with passengers. They were mainly Filipino with poor english. Returned later for the safety talk. Disorganised mess. There are simply not enough European speakers there to manage the amount of passengers. Not enough space to do this properly. If that wasn't bad enough we had to sit while a staff member went through a long rambling talk in German, English and French. Went on and on. We can only hope that her German was good as the rest wasn't. All the briefings on deck were like this. Long, long waits. Long, long mangled talks that were often unintelligible. We wasted so much room waiting and enduring these. When we were on deck there was no where to sit and enjoy the feeling of the sea air. All seats were taken early and aggressively defended and were too few for the number of passengers. We had to stand or stroll but that was hard given the number of people packed into such a small space. The public rooms had very small windows and missed the sea experience. We didn't dock in ports. Apart from Athens all were done by tender or even zodiac. Now for the good bits. We found prices for drinks very reasonable. There was a great cheap laundry service. Food was plentiful. It was easy to move around the boat even for those with slight mobility problems. Not suitable for wheelchair users but there were plenty of elderly and/ or walking stick users. We did like our small but very comfortable cabin and the whole boat was very clean.

I was lucky enough to be invited on Star Clipper in Malta this summer, and must confess was blown away by the combination of luxury cruising and a 'proper' sailing experience. The huge difference here is the nature of the sailing experience - many guests enjoy hoisting the sheets and climbing the rigging, for some of the most rewarding views at sea. Villa Rufolo is located in the town of Ravello, about 7 km from Amalfi. The property dates back to the 13th century and underwent a substantial restoration in the 19th century. Today, visitors to the villa will see the Arab-Norman style architecture, and can admire the beautiful gardens. The lower garden hosts the Ravello festival every year.

Sorrento is located about 50 km south of Naples. The charming town is characterised by its vivid colours and the cliffs that overlook the gulf, making its landscape truly special. Sorrento is known for being the birthplace of Italian poet Torquato Tasso in the 16th century; the famous author of "Gerusalemme liberata". The city's main square bears the name of the poet and, with its typical bars and restaurants, represents the centre of Sorrento's social scene.

Cathedral of Sorrento
The Cathedral of Sorrento, located on the Bishop's Plaza (or piazza del vescovado in Italian), was built on the remains of an ancient Greek temple. Construction began in the 10th century and the church was consecrated in 1113. The neo-Gothic facade dates back to the 20th century.
Marina Grande
Marina Grande is the ancient fishing village of Sorrento. It’s been used as a film set for several Italian films in the 1950s, and is now a tourist resort that offers incredible views of the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the Capo di Sorrento coast.
Piazza Tasso
Piazza Tasso is the main square of Sorrento. It is named after Torquato Tasso, a 16th-century Italian poet who penned the well-known epic poem, 'Jerusalem Delivered", to which a statue is dedicated. Another statue, located in the centre of the square, depicts Antonino da Campagna - the patron saint of the city.
Positano Beach
Positano is one of the most fascinating and attractive stretches of the Sorrento peninsula - and indeed the entire Amalfi coast. It is located between Capo Sottile and Punta Germano. One stand out attraction here is the luxurious Roman Villa from the 1st century BC. This is believed to have been built for a freed slave called Posides Claudi Caesari, and can be visited by tourists today.

Today's Civitavecchia was born as an Etruscan village along the Tyrrhenian coast, but it is believed that the territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The first documents mentioning the city date back to the year 107 AD; the same as the construction of the port which ended three years later. During a stop in Civitavecchia you can visit the Taurine Baths, the Michelangelo Fort, and the Cathedral.

Terme Taurine
The Taurine Baths - a Roman archaeological site dating back to the 1st century BC - are located around 4km from the urban centre of Civitavecchia. There is a legend that says the baths came to be after a bull scraped at the ground before a fight, and in doing so uncovered a hot water spring.
Aquafelix Waterpark
Aquafelix Waterpark is ideal for a day of fun with your family and friends. It is the largest water park in central Italy, and boasts areas dedicated to both adults and children.
Forte Michelangelo
The construction of the Michelangelo Fort began in 1508 and ended in 1537. The structure of the fortress, in true Renaissance style, has the shape of a quadrilateral with a tower in each corner, and the central tower has an octagonal layout. Its creation was ordered by Pope Julius II, to defend the Port of Civitavecchia against pirates and any other hostile encounters.
Cathedrale de Civitavecchia
The Cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi is the most important church of Civitavecchia. Dating back to the 17th century and completely restored in 1950, it has a Baroque style and stands on the remains of a previous Franciscan church.
