SOUTH AMERICA DISCOVERY - 7 Jan - 19 March, 2016 72 days away. 23 ports, with two missed out because of bad weather - Port of Spain, Trinidad, and Punta del Este, Uruguay. 23,500 miles travelled. Fantastic experience, although for some guests the first week was not a good one because of an unseasonably early storm after departing Madeira. Saga Pearl II is smallish so it got tossed around a bit The quality of staff is excellent, and lots of long service crew which says a lot about Saga employment practices. Staff and management aboard worked hard to ensure that the cruise was a memorable experience for guests - for all the right reasons - and they succeeded. The entertainment was generally of good quality and high standard, something for everyone, really. The highlights for me and the missus were: - the Panama Canal transit (one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World - meeting up with an ex-colleague in Guayaquil, Ecuador - Lima, Peru - the Chilean fjords, "glacier alley" and the Garibaldi Glacier - a lap of honour around Cape Horn on a calm and sunny morning - Buenos Aires, with a return evening performance by the Morgado Esteban Cuarteto and tango dancing, aboard. The quartet had done 3 performances on the Colombia - Peru leg. - Rio de Janeiro, the trip to Christ the Redeemer (in clear weather), and an evening performance aboard by Samba Rio. (I heard that the ship's doctor was on standby with the defibrillator.....but maybe that was a tongue-in-cheek comment from one of the female passengers because the Samba dancer outfits!) And that's just to name some of the highlights.....there was much, much more. The only downside.......stepping on the scales yesterday. The dining was excellent with really good complimentary wines at lunch and dinner. We did our own excursions as we are fit and able, and confident about doing our own thing. One memorable excursion we organised via the internet was the 'Grafreetti' in Valparaiso, conducted by a street artist. Amazing creative art! I can highly recommend Saga cruises. Of the 23 cruises we've done, this has to be the best cruise ever!

Having undergone numerous refurbishments, Dover offers much more than just the stunning white cliffs and its fascinating history. As well as the Roman ruins, the excellently preserved Dover Castle and the Roman Painted House featuring impressive murals, visitors will find numerous seafood restaurants and bars along the waterfront to relax in. Dover Castle
Perhaps the most iconic landmark in the port city of Dover, Dover Castle was built in the 11th century and is Grade I listed. A key defensive castle, it’s operated by English Heritage and offers several events throughout the year, including pirate shows and canon displays.
White Cliffs
For incredible views out towards France, head to the White Cliffs of Dover. Reaching 350 feet, this prominent attraction is popular with tourists and locals alike due to the fantastic walking trails. Within easy reach of the castle and port, its striking appearance makes it a must see when stopping off or cruising from Dover.
Connaught Park
Alternatively, you can head inland to Connaught Park; a spacious park that has lots of trails, a playground, tennis courts and breathtaking views out towards Dover and the channel. On sunny days, cruise ships can be seen docked at the port.
Haugesund
DAY 3
Where Vikings and kings once used to rule, Haugesund is now home to rugged landscapes, cultural celebrations, extreme sports and fantastic shopping in the city centre. For a taste of traditional Norse history, visit the Nordvegen History Centre where kids can dress up as Vikings. For active outdoorsmen, a guided hike to Langfoss waterfall is an unforgettable experience, though the steep cliffs are not for the faint of heart! Finally, take a walk around the city for dining, shopping and fun festivals.

Haraldshaugen
A national moment in Haugesund, Haraldshaugen is a moment that was built in 1872 to commemorate Norway’s unification, under the rule of the 19th century King Harald Fairhair. A prominent historical landmark, it’s a short bus or taxi ride from the cruise port.
Djupadalen
If you’re in port for most of the day and you fancy stretching your legs, the Djupadalen hiking trail is just the ticket. Along the way you’ll see an array of wildlife, flowers and trees. A beautiful walk that’s well worth a go for those fitness fanatics, it’s a more tranquil activity to enjoy during your time in Haugesund.
Nordvegen History Centre
If you want a true taste of Norway, head to the Nordvegen History Centre, where you’ll be greeted with ‘real’ vikings' before discovering the fascinating history of this beautiful country. Perfect for those wanting to find out more about Norway and its captivating past.
Stavanger, Norway
DAY 4
Nestled amongst some of the most beautiful natural attractions, Stavanger is the fourth largest city in Norway. Boasting both contemporary modern attractions as well as excellently preserved old wooden settlements, this classic Norwegian city is a great getaway for active adventurers looking for outdoor pursuits, while those looking for cosmopolitan city escapes will love the shopping and dining. Travelling with kids? The whole family will be delighted by the wide range of interactive museums.

Gamle Stavanger
Gamle Stavanger is a historic neighbourhood within Stavanger, a city in the Norwegian province of Rogaland. Most of the houses in the region were constructed in the 18th and early 19th centuries and have been renovated, showcasing a flawless combination of contemporary and historic architecture. Stavanger's new city plan was developed following World War II.
Stavanger Maritime Museum
Whether you’re passionate about Maritime history, or you’re drawn into the rich culture of Stavanger, Stavanger Maritime Museum should be added to your list. Conveying over 200 years of history, trade and craftsmanship, the museum is located within beautifully preserved merchant buildings.
Fargegaten

In Norway's Vestland county, Eidfjord serves as the municipality's administrative hub. The village is located on the shores of the picturesque Eid Fjord, a smaller branch of the vast Hardangerfjorden. Beautiful scenery, a warm and welcoming feel and a selection of fascinating attractions can be found here.

Ravenheart
Immerse yourself in the one-of-a-kind Ravenheart Hardanger. A popular museum within easy reach of the port, you'll discover what it was like to be alive during the Viking ages, and see an array of artefacts, what they ate, as well as historical reconstructions. A fun activity to enjoy during your time in Eidfjord, you'll feel as though you've been transported back in time.
Kråkeskarvet
One of three beaches in the area, this picturesque beach has a small swimming area that features a diving board. A wonderful way to spend a day in Eidfjord, you’ll feel as though you’re in a fairytale when you arrive here.
Eidfjord kyrkje
The Church of Norway's parish church in Eidfjord Municipality, Vestland County, Norway, is known as Eidfjord Church. Serving as the parish church for the Eidfjord area of the Hardanger og Voss prosti in the Diocese of Bjrgvin. The architect Sigurd Sekse's designs were used to construct the rectangular, contemporary-looking red brick church in 1981 and it caters for around 375 people.
