Chengdu - Panda Conservation Centre
DAY 18
A journey to the remarkable city of Chengdu wouldn’t quite be complete without a visit to the vital Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding; so, that’s where you’re going to be spending most of your day – and you’re in for a truly special experience. Home to over 200 giant pandas (a vulnerable species heavily reliant on conservation efforts for its survival), a small number of red pandas, and a small selection of other endangered species endemic to China, this government-funded non-profit conservation centre plays an important role in preserving giant pandas as a species. While you’re here, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the important work the Chengdu Research Base is doing, to observe these magical mammals in enclosures that near-mirror their natural habitat, and to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Giant pandas are fairly solitary creatures, who often spend most of the day sleeping, so each sighting during your visit will be truly special.
Things to see:
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
A unique government-funded non-profit breeding and research institution, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was founded in 1987 with the express goal of improving the giant panda population in China and becoming a world-class research facility, conservation centre, and international education destination; starting with just six giant pandas, all of which were rescued from the wild, the Chengdu Research Base is now home to over 200 giant pandas.
Giant Panda
A truly remarkable animal considered ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and largely reliant on the conservation efforts of organisations like the Chengdu Research Base for its survival, these black-and-white bears are often seen as a national symbol of China – to which they are endemic.
Red Panda
Small mammals considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, red pandas are actually more closely related to raccoons and skunks than they are the giant panda; however, they also primarily feed on bamboo shoots and leaves, and they’re known for their reddish-brown fur, black bellies, and white muzzle.

Xian - Terracotta Warriors & City Tour
DAY 16
From the fascinating mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor, to the impressive ancient city walls, this day tour expertly combines the rich history of Xi’An, one of the Chinese Four Great Ancient Capitals, with it’s equally-rich modern culture to offer you an enriching experience with equal measures of intrigue and indulgence. You’ll start with a tour of the enigmatic ranks of the Terracotta Army before visiting the Xi’An Arts and Ceramics Exhibition, where they’ve been faithfully reproducing Terracotta Warriors of varying sizes for over 65 years. After spending some time admiring all the incredible ceramic artwork on display here, with the chance for you to pick up your own Terracotta Warrior as a souvenir, you’ll stroll the stunning city walls. Originally built in the 14th century, these well-preserved walls will give you great views of Xi’An city and the surrounding scenery.
Things to see:
The Terracotta Army
An enigmatic collection of terracotta sculptures representing the impressive armies of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, these stoic warriors were buried around 210 BCE with the task of protecting him in his afterlife.
Xi’An Arts and Ceramics Exhibition
Home to over 10,000 modern ceramic artworks from artists the world-over, these impressive exhibitions showcase a wonderful blend of modern and traditional techniques; this is also home to a state-run factory that has been dutifully reproducing terracotta warriors of varying sizes for over 65 years.
Xi’An Ancient City Walls
Impressive fortifications originally built in the 14th century, these are among the best-preserved ancient city walls in China and offer anyone walking them sensational views of Xi’An city and the stunning scenery of the Shaanxi province surrounding it.
