Scenic Cruising Kanmon Straits
DAY 10
30 Aug 2025
Time at Port: from 9:30 PM to 11:30 PM
A stunning stretch of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan’s four main islands, the Kanmon Straits (which are also known as the Straits of Shimonoseki) are surprisingly narrow for the number of ships (around 700 on an average day) that take advantage of this waterway daily. Playing an important role in Japan’s naval history, with numerous battles between Japan and the US taking place here throughout the Shimonoseki Campaign in 1863, cruising through this stretch of water will afford you the opportunity to admire the stunning scenery of both Japanese islands at the same time. Every August, the Kanmon Strait plays host to the largest firework display in Japan, where more than 13,000 fireworks are launched from both sides of the strait into the night sky.
Scenic Cruising Kanmon Straits:
Mekari Shrine
A Shinto shrine established circa 200 in Kitakyushu, Mekari Shrine is visible from the Kanmon Straits; built by Empress Jingu after her visit during the legendary Korean invasion in the 3rd century, the shrine was built as thanks to the Kami. The structure we see today was built in 1767 by the Ogasawara clan, and the Mekari Shinji ritual is observed here every year for good luck.
Dannoura Battlefield
This slender stretch of greenspace in Mimosusogawa Park, which is visible from the Kanmon Straits, features several statues representing the warring Heike and Genji clans – prominent clans who fought each other during a major sea battle in 1185 during the Genpei War. While legends vary on the number of ships and fighters involved, the Heike clan (which was known as the Taira clan) was decimated as a result and the Genji clan (known as the Minamoto clan) gained control of Japan as a result.
Kanmon Bridge
Opened in 1973, you’ll pass under Kanmon Bridge as you sail the Kanmon Straits. Among the world’s longest suspension bridges, stretching over 3,500 feet across the waterway, Kanmon Bridge connects Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu.
Sasebo
DAY 11
31 Aug 2025
Time at Port: from 9 AM to 7 PM
A major city in Japan’s Nagasaki Prefecture, but with a population density half of what Nagasaki itself has, Sasebo is a fantastic place to immerse yourself in modern Japanese culture without the overwhelming nature of a sprawling metropolis like Tokyo. And, with unique attractions like the Tenkaiho Observatory, Huis Ten Bosch, and Saikai National Park all a short distance from Sasebo city centre, there’s more than enough to keep you busy during your time here. If you’re a foodie, you’ll be pleased to know that – alongside all the delicious Japanese dishes you know and love – you’ll also find the Sasebo Burger here – hand-made hamburgers introduced over 50 years ago by soldiers at Sasebo’s American Navy Base that have since become a national phenomenon.
Things to do in Sasebo:
Huis Ten Bosch
Mimicking a Dutch village, this unique theme offers several attractions, from rides to restaurants and plenty of photo opportunities.
Ishidake Observatory
If you're looking for scenic views, head over to the Ishidake Observatory. Overlooking Kujukushima, it has an impressive altitude of 191 metres.
Kujukushima
The Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort has several attractions within it, including an aquarium, shops, restaurants and the opportunity to enjoy boat rides around it.

DAY 12
01 Sep 2025

A tranquil beach within easy reach of the city, you can sit back and relax whilst watching the peaceful waves roll in. Alternatively you can enjoy some watersports or a hike around the area.

We have previously cruised with other cruise lines and have found that we prefer the smaller ships. The Norwegian Spirit fitted into that class.
The ship was lovely, the crew were attentive and well trained in customer service and the food in all restaurants was excellent.
If we had a criticism it would be, the staterooms are smaller than others we have been in, particularly the bathroom which was very small. The theatre was beautiful but not used to it's full potential. The lack of big production shows was very disappointing.
Other than this we would not hesitate to join this ship again.

I am a first time traveller on a cruise ship. I bsolutely loved travelling on the Norwegian Spirit. Was a great ship with plenty of activities, entertainment and the food was to a high standard.
The only downside was the internet package. For 11 days on the ship 150 minutes of WiFi was insufficient. To buy extra WiFi was expensive.

I liked the cabin decor and space. We were travelling with a wheelchair but when we booked the cruise there was no accessible cabins left. We had a standard balcony cabin and there was still plenty of space to put the chair. Lots of help from the crew when getting on and off. The ship was well maintained as you would expect. The layout was typical of most cruise ships. All of the people that worked on the ship were very kind. One of the things that stood out was how happy they were. We have been on other ships where most were miserable and that doesn’t enhance the trip any. Great itinerary around Japan. On this trip we had to miss a port due to the weather but that didn’t take anything away as we had more time in the next one. Food was above average and there was a huge choice in the buffet. We had some included meals at the speciality restaurants. This was a lovely extra but not worth it if you are paying as the food in the main dining rooms was just as good. Embarkation and disembarkation was handled very well.
