Royal Caribbean's two new cruise ships have been named the
Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas - following a five-month competition.
Members of the public were invited to write in with suggestions for the new name that ended with 'of the Seas'. It was the first time people from outside the cruise industry have been given the opportunity to name a ship.
George Weiser from Michigan wrote in with the winning combination of
Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas.
"Taking into account the remarkable sea-going destination
Oasis of the Seas will be, the name selection evokes an appropriate feeling of verdant comfort and luxury," said John Maxtone-Graham, a maritime historian and one of the judges of the Name that Ship competition.
Oasis of the Seas will be launched in 2009 and will be the largest ship in the world, carrying nearly five and a half thousand guests, featuring 2,700 staterooms and spanning 16 decks.
