Environmentally-conscious cruise lovers will be delighted to hear that Princess Cruises
has signed an agreement to make its presence in the port of Los Angeles greener.
The company has said that it will now switch its engines off when in port in LA and will plug in to "clean" electrical power supplied by the port.
"We're extremely pleased and proud to be expanding our commitment to using shore power wherever the landside technology is available, which will now include the Port of Los Angeles next year," said Alan Buckelew, President of Princess Cruises.
"We're dedicated to making this connection programme a success, just as we're dedicated to the local air quality issues that are important to the community."
The Princess Cruises
ships will become the first cruise liners to use shore power. LA is the only port that currently plugs in container ships too.
Custom-built, state-of-the-art electrical connection cabinets have been added to Princess Cruises' ships to enable the shore power hook-up.
In another first in September last year, Princess Cruises
became the first cruise line to convert to all-electronic tickets, meaning guests receive their travel documents earlier.
