Holland America Line has announced that it is to become more environmentally friendly, great news for any cruise holidaymakers that have a green conscience.
The cruise line has said that it is conducting a seawater scrubber feasibility project to see whether the technology, which reduces air emissions on cruise liners and sea vessels, would be of practical use.
"Holland America Line has always had a vigorous environmental programme and we believe in being proactive on environmental issues," said Stein Kruse, President and Chief Executive Officer.
"A scrubber has never previously been installed on a vessel engine of this size. We are extremely proud to be in the forefront of this technology and feel it is important to collaborate with key partners to find practical solutions."
It is expected that the technology will reduce nitrogen oxides and almost totally eliminate the emission of sulphur dioxide, meaning any passenger onboard one of Holland America's cruise liners will have less of an environmental impact in the future.
The cruise line has a number of other environmental protection measures in place, including guidelines for passengers to respect their beautiful natural surroundings.
