2-5 cruises
25 Mar 2025
We have just returned from our very first cruise holiday, cruising around the Canary Islands with MSC, having booked with Iglu Cruise, after finding a great value deal. The booking process was extremely straightforward and we had our cruise booked online within a few minutes. MSC provided very comprehensive information that included all details for our upcoming cruise. The only difficulty we encountered, was that the link to check in to our flights with Jet2 did not work, however this was resolved through a WhatsApp conversation with Jet2. If I could suggest one improvement, it would be the ability to download our boarding passes onto the jet2 app. This was not possible and as a result we had to print our boarding passes at home and several of them would not scan at the airport, both when checking in bags and through security. Jet2 are one of the best holiday companies we have ever travelled with, there are so many ground staff available to assist, that it is so easy to move through the airport and on to transfer.
We cruised on MSC Opera, a slightly older ship that can carry up to 2658 passengers but with lots of charm and comfort. To be honest after we booked some of the negative reviews caused us concern, but we need not have worried, we had a fantastic holiday. The ship was spotlessly clean, both in the communal areas, our cabins, the restaurants and public toilets. There were sanitising stations on entry to the restaurants and buffet, but there were very few people using them. One suggestion, (particularly after witnessing two women leaving the toilets without washing their hands, one then heading to the buffet), would be for a member of staff to stand at the door and ensure people sanitise their hands when entering the restaurants particularly for self-service.
Our cabin attendant Safa and team (cabin 9032) made up our cabin beautifully each morning, plenty of fresh towels and perfectly made bed to return to.
I have read so many reviews about the average nature of the food and I honestly must disagree. The food was delicious and there was so much of it, both in terms of amount and variety – you can eat from morning to night! We initially went to Le Vele buffet restaurant for breakfast but after a couple of days changed to La Caravella restaurant, where you have both buffet breakfast and the option to order from a menu that included, as well as a cooked breakfast, other egg options such as poached, fried and eggs Benedict, in addition to salmon and French toast to name but a few. Juice, tea and coffee were served by waiting staff. The buffet itself provides for every taste and in addition to the cooked breakfast, provided a continental option with ham, cheese, bread, waffles, muffins, cookies and cereals. For lunch we tended to go to Le Vele buffet restaurant, again a wide range of food that varied throughout the week, with desserts to die for after lunch. On days that we were off the ship over lunch we tended to go for ‘Afternoon snacks at Le Vele, served from 4pm, where you could have sandwiches, filled rolls, scones, wraps, fruit, cookies, cake and the most delicious fruit crumble. For our evening meal we opted for the three course sit down meal. There are two restaurants that offer the sit-down meal but you are allocated one by MSC, ours was in L’Approdo restaurant. Again, what a choice, something to tempt every palate. Our waiters Jonathan and Yoga were very attentive, friendly and polite, offering us recommendations for our meal. You must try the Tiramisu, it is the best I have tasted! There are two sittings on the cruise, 6. 30pm and 9pm but your time is preselected by the company, ours was at 9pm which worked well for us. Compliments to the chefs and kitchen staff for their amazing food!
After our meal we tended to go to Le Vele for a mug of tea and guess what……. midnight snacks, more cake, desserts and fruit. (You might see a pattern emerging). In addition to all the above, there is a burger buffet throughout the day and a pizza buffet that remains open to the early hours of the morning. The dough is freshly made, and the pizzas are delicious.
Some reviews have commented that the buffet is busy and yes it can be, although we never had an issue getting a seat as you can take your food out to tables at the burger or pizza buffets. There are individuals who do not get the concept of queueing but that is not the fault of MSC, it is perhaps cultural or just rude.
All staff on board the Opera were pristine and immaculately dressed. The majority were friendly and courteous and extremely helpful when help was required. The process for leaving and returning to the ship to explore the islands is extremely efficient and speedy.
We did not book any excursions, preferring to explore around the town by ourselves, taking time to visit little coffee shops and local sights. On board, lots of activities are offered from quizzes to dance lessons, aerobics to games. There is also an excellent gym, although there may be a short wait for treadmills during busier times. If someone is waiting you are permitted 25 minutes, although some individuals ignored this limit. If no one is waiting you can remain on for as long as you want. There are two pools, one of which we had a dip in, it is cold so take a deep breath to go in. We also used the outdoor jacuzzi a couple of times, just lovely sitting in the sun while the ship is sailing. The pool area gets busy on ‘At Sea’ days so go early if you want to lounge by the pool, although there are lots of loungers. There is a fantastic water area for children, although we did not use it as we had no children travelling with us. MSC provide an orange beach towel free of charge and I loved the fact that they have a towel exchange, so if you have been in the pool no need to take a wet towel to your room, they will exchange it for you. They also permit their orange towels to be taken to the beach, so you do not need to pack towels to take with you.
Each evening there is a different show in the tiered seated theatre, which was fantastic and not to be missed, although get there early as the seats fill up quickly. Shows are themed and involve singing and dancing as well as acrobatics. The same show takes place twice each evening, the first one at 7. 30pm and lasts approximately 35 minutes. If the ship is a bit rocky sit up towards the back as I found I felt more lightheaded closer to the front.
We had rough seas on a few of our evenings (pack the travel pills), but it did not put a stop to any of the activities or entertainment.
If you want a cruise with all mod cons such as surfing pool etc or very flash, then this is probably not for you, but if you are happy with more standard pools, decor etc but want fabulous food and a reasonable price, then you should consider MSC Opera.
Overall, we loved our cruise, thank you MSC and to every member of staff on MSC Opera that contributed to our wonderful holiday.

Generally very good. Plenty of friendly, helpful staff. Food good and plentiful (my tummy is pleased to be back home). Interesting ports of call. I think we could have been given more information about the ports of call (not just selling trips) ie how to get into town, what to see within walking distance etc etc. Also, I think we should have been given a talk about the Canary Islands - their history, how the Spanish arrived, what happened to the indiginous population, how they coped with corsairs/pirate raids, aloe vera etc.
All offers and prices are subject to change and availability at time of enquiry. Prices are based on two passengers sharing unless otherwise stated and are subject to the Tour Operator's terms and conditions. Cabin and Flight supplements may apply. Other supplements may apply in addition to the price shown above. Flight details, timings and routing may be subject to alteration. Other tour operator charges may also apply. Any Onboard Spending money or drinks package value shown will be per cabin, again based on two sharing.

Civitavecchia (tours to Rome)
DAY 7
29 Mar 2025
Time at Port: from 8 AM to 6 PM
Today's Civitavecchia was born as an Etruscan village along the Tyrrhenian coast, but it is believed that the territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The first documents mentioning the city date back to the year 107 AD; the same as the construction of the port which ended three years later. During a stop in Civitavecchia you can visit the Taurine Baths, the Michelangelo Fort, and the Cathedral.
Things to do in Civitavecchia (tours to Rome):
Terme Taurine
The Taurine Baths - a Roman archaeological site dating back to the 1st century BC - are located around 4km from the urban centre of Civitavecchia. There is a legend that says the baths came to be after a bull scraped at the ground before a fight, and in doing so uncovered a hot water spring.
Aquafelix Waterpark
Aquafelix Waterpark is ideal for a day of fun with your family and friends. It is the largest water park in central Italy, and boasts areas dedicated to both adults and children.
Forte Michelangelo
The construction of the Michelangelo Fort began in 1508 and ended in 1537. The structure of the fortress, in true Renaissance style, has the shape of a quadrilateral with a tower in each corner, and the central tower has an octagonal layout. Its creation was ordered by Pope Julius II, to defend the Port of Civitavecchia against pirates and any other hostile encounters.
Cathedrale de Civitavecchia
The Cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi is the most important church of Civitavecchia. Dating back to the 17th century and completely restored in 1950, it has a Baroque style and stands on the remains of a previous Franciscan church.
At Sea
DAY 8
30 Mar 2025
While sailing between destinations, you’ll have time to take a moment and enjoy everything your cruise ship has to offer; with stunning food prepared with the freshest ingredients, fantastic entertainment opportunities, and plenty of places to lounge around, an enjoyable day at sea awaits!
Corfu
DAY 9
31 Mar 2025
Time at Port: from 9 AM to 6 PM
One of Greece’s most verdant islands and perfect for a family holiday with charming architecture, an impressive fort and a 16th century church, Agios Spyridhon. Mount Pantokrantor rears up in the north of the island and all around the edges are sandy beaches and small villages. Whether you’re here to top up a tan on the stunning Loggas Beach or eager to discover the gorgeous monuments, Corfu has something for everyone.
Things to do in Corfu:
Agni Bay
This hidden gem will provide the perfect getaway from bustling crowds. If you’re looking to relax in a quaint fishing village, enjoy traditional Corfiot cuisine on the waterfront and take a dip in the vibrant waters, Agni Bay is the place for you.
Loggas Beach
Surrounded by imposing cliffs, Loggas Beach – otherwise known as Sunset Beach – is one of the most beautiful spots in Corfu. You won’t find wild water sports here, instead you’ll witness breath-taking sunsets and take a dip in the warm, gentle water.
Saint George Church
Built in 1840 for British troops serving in Corfu, the Church of St George now hosts only two services each year, as well as occasional exhibitions. With views out over Garitsa Bay, this church resembles an ancient Greek temple and provides great photo opportunities.
Vlacherna Monastery
Found on a tiny islet close by to the airport of Corfu, Vlacherna Monastery dates back to around the 17th and 18th centuries. The beautifully preserved building is a great photo opportunity particularly at sunset, and the perfect place to take a romantic stroll.
Bari
DAY 10
01 Apr 2025
Time at Port: from 7 AM to 5 PM
Found on the southeast edge of Italy, Bari has long been a large and bustling port town which boasts some fascinating history. There are plenty of religious buildings to see which house the relics of various saints – including those of St Nicholas (Santa Claus), and Saint Columba of Ireland. It’s also worth exploring the Old Town and Piazza Mercantile, to get a flavour of traditional Bari life complete with fresh Italian cooking, children playing football, and of course plenty of wine. In the piazza is also the ‘colonna infame’, which dates back to the first century AD. It’s here where criminals were held in years gone by to be ridiculed and punished.
Things to do in Bari:
St. Nichola's Basilica
Dating back to the 12th century, Basilica di San Nicola, was originally built to house the remains and relics of St Nicholas (popularly known as Santa Claus), which were stolen around that time from Myra in Turkey. The arrival of the important relics is re-enacted every year in May, when locals arrive to the port by boat with an icon-style painting of the saint. This basilica is an important pilgrimage among Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Bari Cathedral
Although less famous, many say that Bari Cathedral is actually a more important building than Basilica di San Nicola in Bari. It was built in the 12th-13th centuries, on the site of another cathedral that was destroyed by King William I of Sicily in the mid-12th century. It is dedicated to San Sabino, whose relics were brought to the area in the 9th century and are now stored in the cathedral. Some relics of Saint Columba of Ireland are also kept here.
Castello Svevo
It’s believed that the original castle structure was built around 1130-1135, by the Norman King Roger II of Sicily, only to be destroyed by William I of Sicily in 1156. Then King Frederick II of Sicily rebuilt it in the 13th century. Today visitors can explore some of the castle, where art exhibitions and events are often held. There is also a permanent collection of plaster cast replicas of 11th to 17th century artefacts.
Bari Old Town
Known locally as Bari Vecchia, the old part of the city is full of quaint streets and charming architecture. It provides the quintessential Italian atmosphere of narrow roads, children playing football, laundry hanging overhead, and the smells of delicious food being prepared. The streets of Old Bari can lead you to or away from the main square (Piazza Mercantile), where attractions such as the Basilica di San Nicola are located.
Piazza Mercantile
The main square of the old town, Piazza Mercantile is a vibrant social hub of eateries and bars and has been since medieval times. In around the 14th century traders came here to sell their wares – although today’s marketplace is not located here – and it quickly became the place to eat, drink, and be merry. There is some important architecture surrounding the square too, such as the 13th Colonna Infame, and the 16th century Palazzo del Sedile (old town hall and clock tower).
Column of Justice
Otherwise known as the Colonna Infame – or infamous column – this menacing lion statue and column are situated in one corner of Piazza Mercantile. The lion wears an inscribed collar reading ‘Custos Iusticiae’ – or ‘Keeper of Justice’, and represents law and order, and protection of the city. The lion dates back to around the first century AD, but the column was not installed until the 16th century. It is believed that debtors and other small-time criminals were once tied to the column to be publicly shamed and ridiculed.
Zadar
DAY 11
02 Apr 2025
Time at Port: from 9 AM to 6 PM
One of Croatia’s best kept secrets, Zadar has the historic heritage and fascinating architecture of Dubrovnik with a quieter, more intimate feel. As well as the impressive 16th-century walls and gates, you can explore ancient churches such as St Donatus’ Church, and the Roman Forum ruins. You’ll also find the renowned attraction, the Sea Organ, an art installation that plays music when filled with water.
Things to do in Zadar:
Museum of Ancient Glass
Situated in the 19th-century Cosmacendi Palace, the Museum of Ancient Glass houses stunning collections of Roman glassware, from jars and vials to goblets and flasks. Visitors can also purchase their own replicas of these delicate pieces in the souvenir shop.
Roman Forum
Built between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD, the Roman Forum ruins were the centre of daily life. Most notable is the decorative column once used as a ‘pillar of shame’ to punish criminals, as well as the remains of the Capitolium.
St Donatus Church
Founded in the 9th century, the unusually-shaped Church of St Donat no longer serves as a church but holds frequent events and concerts because of its excellent acoustics. Visitors can take a look around inside, though it’s impressive structure is best admired from outside.
St Mary Church
Founded in 1066, St Mary’s Church is an understated yet stunning piece of architecture in Zadar. The adjoining treasury contains an exhibition of religious art, and is beautifully preserved by nuns of the church.
Zadar Walls and Gates
The most impressive of the walls and gates is the Land Gate, the main entrance into the city, built in 1543. Zadar’s walls and gates meant that the city remained uncaptured, and are now a great way to explore the surroundings on foot.
Marghera (Venice)

The following exclusions apply: tobacco, souvenir glasses, ice cream menus, retail items, minibar, room service, promotions and Signature Venues (Venchi 1878 , Jean-Philippe Maury venues, MSC Virtuosa Starship Club) regardless of the price of drinks, cabin service and promotions. Drinks and liquor may be substituted according to availability and itinerary.
Please note, if you have purchased a drinks package after 18th December 2024 and are departing on a sailing from 1st April 2025 onwards, you will have a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per person, per day. There is no cap on non-alcoholic drinks and you'll have the option to purchase additional alcoholic drinks. This is also applicable for MSC Yacht Club guests. However, if you have purchased your drinks package before 18th December 2024, OR your sailing is before April 1st 2025 this limit does not apply.
Please be advised that in respect to the Saudi Law, alcohol will not be served during the Calls in Saudi Arabian ports. Alcohol will be available to our guests when the ship sails in International Waters.
