Lovely ship, spotlessly clean as cleaning seemed to go on all day which was good. Staff exceptionally nice albeit some were overworked especially at the bar areas which also dealt with soft drinks and ice cream. Food mostly excellent but self service restaurant sometimes was a hit and miss. Customer Help Desk could really be more helpful and you have to press them if you have an important issue. Irritating when you ask a young member of staff onboard a question and you get back an enormous smile instead of an answer since not all can speak English. The theatre was a beautiful and attractive one just as you would expect, and the acts were fabulous. Looked forward every evening to this. All in all a lovely cruise but not sure if it was value for money.

CONS -Embarkation - we were waiting for two hours in the port. The port guy was constantly shouting at you and people waiting. People in the queue were very poorly mannered, kicking, pushing you and trying to skip the long queues -MSC gave us incorrect drinks package and then blamed our travel agent saying travel agent provided incorrect info ( not true) -MSC allocated our preferred restaurant incorrectly and blamed our travel agent asking for that specific restaurant as per our request (not true) -Dirty bedlinen in the cabin ( stains) -Dirty bathroom ( dirty door, mirror, rust and dirt in the shower) -The balcony cabin is old and carpet/ furniture needs to be replaced very badly - The balcony is dirty and rusty - Customer service is non existent -at the very best they will ignore your complaints, otherwise they will shout at you , they could not care less about your comfort or satisfaction -Cold water at all tea stations- impossible to make a cup of tea -The pool was impossible to get into- too many poorly mannered people pushing you out of the way and kicking you ( we have got a balcony cabin Fantastica experience, which was supposed to be a luxury experience- what a joke!) -The Italian staff were very rude , inpatient, poorly mannered. They were constantly raising their voice and shouting at you. Anything we were asking for was too much of a trouble for them - Our waiter at dinner was really good but service in the restaurant during lunchtime was awful - the waiting staff was ignoring you, you could sit there for 30 min waiting to get a menu, the waiter at the door shouted at you when asked to take order ( shouting that he is not taking orders as he is a door waiter) -They will charge you for water in the cabin even when water is included with your package - They will add Unicef charge to your bill without asking you - I have got a severe allergic reaction within 10 minutes of drinking their cheap pina colada at the pool -They will mix french and english speaking groups together on excursions to earn more money, pure greed ( and will still charge you 90 euro per person). -Disembarking was terrible, staff were treating you like a cattle, long queues again for 3 hours, staff shouting at you, people kicking and pushing you, arrival was also late -Buffet was a mess, people running around, pushing you out of the way and trying to skip long queues - The wines included in the 30 euro per day package were very cheap and of a very bad quality , MSC cocktails gave me a severe allergic reaction PROS -The food was very tasty -Ports / towns where we stopped were very nice - especially Dubrovnik , Venice, Lecce, Mykonos, Olympia -Some Asian staff were very good, polite and friendly -Excursions were interesting and well organised ( except for the guide called Eva in Athens - Acropolis, Plaka and Museum tour- my advice would be to avoid this one) -Entertainment was really good

Lake Como is one of Italy’s most idyllic locations, with visitors flocking here from all over the world for many centuries. The serene beauty of the lake and surrounding shores offers a level of peace and tranquillity that can be hard to find in today’s modern world, which is why so many people come to take a deep breath and relax. As well as amazing views, the Lake Como area has a rich history and many fascinating sites to see. These include Piona Abbey, Como Cathedral, and San Fedele Church – all of which display intricate architecture of varying styles and periods. Wander around the streets imagining years gone by, and take time to simply enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.
Train - Lecco / Como to Venice Mestre:
Como Cathedral
Located in the original site of a Romanesque church, the building of Como Cathedral began ten years after the Milan Cathedral, in the late 14th century. Statues of Pliny the Elder and his nephew Pliny the Younger welcome visitors; standing proudly on the façade of the building. These are now sheltered by glass cases to avoid further environmental damage. Inside there are important tapestries and paintings depicting various saints and biblical/historical scenes.
Varenna Village
This gorgeous and peaceful location is an ancient fishing village with a romantic and calm atmosphere, where visitors can come and enjoy the slow pace of life. The area has a rich and interesting history, in no small part due to the rivalry with nearby commune Como. It is home to the Villa Monestero, a convent founded in the early 13th century by some religious folk who had escaped from Comacina Island during the Milan/Como war at this time.
Piona Abbey
Located close to Lake Como’s shoreline, Piona Abbey is believed to date back to as early as the 7th century, as documents attesting to its existence have been found from around this time. The impressive structure is stood on top of Olgiasca Hill, and boasts interesting architecture and frescos. There is also a small shop selling natural wares made by the resident monks such as honey, liquor, cream, and medicinal herbs.
San Fedele Church
The Basilica di San Fedele was built in the year 1120, and is believed to stand on top of ruins of an older place of worship. Found in the main town square – the Piazza San Fedele – the church has long been important in the town’s history. The architecture is Romanesque style, but the façade was refurbished in 1914 and now includes a Renaissance style window.
Bellagio
Referred to by many as the ‘Pearl of Lake Como’, the picturesque town of Bellagio offers a quintessential Italian atmosphere, gorgeous views, and a number of interesting historical and architectural sites. Wander down cobbled streets, take a look at the 12th century Chiesa San Giacomo, and admire the Villas Serbelloni and Melzi. Villa Serbelloni was first built in the 15th century, and over the years has been a gorgeous holiday home and hotel at Lake Como. Many famous figures have stayed there including John F Kennedy, Winston Churchill, and Al Pacino. Today the property is owned by the Rockefeller Foundation.
Venice
DAY 607 Sep 2019
Time at Port: from 9 AM to 4:30 PM
The ‘floating city’ of Venice has romantic connotations all over the world. Known for picturesque canals, colourful buildings, gentle gondola rides, good food, and an ample supply of history, this is one Italian destination that sits on many a bucket list. See magnificent architecture in St Mark’s Square, the fascinating Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Basilica, and the famous Bridge of Sighs. After soaking in centuries of history, be sure to make time to simply watch the world go by with a world-class cup of coffee and a piece of tiramisu, or indeed an indulgent glass of wine and pasta dish.
Things to do in Venice:
Giudecca Island
Located in the Venetian lagoon, Giudecca Island is a small, attractive resort offering some lovely cafes, bars, and restaurants as well as pretty architecture. Over the years it has had a varied history, having been the home to some grand palaces and gardens, before becoming a centre of industry in the 20th century, particularly during World War II. One 16th century mansion has been converted into a beautiful luxury villa.
St. Mark's Square
Piazza San Marco – or St Mark’s Square – is the main square in Venice. It is one of the main attractions, and has had a vibrant role in Venetian history, having been a centre of politics, commerce, and religion over the years. Today it is one of Venice’s main attractions, being surrounded by beautiful architecture on all sides – including the magnificent Basilica di San Marco.
Bridge of Sighs
This well-known, historic piece of architecture joins Venice’s prisons to Doge’s Palace – or more accurately, the interrogation rooms in the palace. Legend says that when prisoners of the 17th century crossed the bridge into the prison, they sighed at their last view of Venice – hence the name. Today the bridge also has romantic significance, with local lore saying that lovers who kiss beneath the bridge in a gondola will have a love that lasts forever.
Doge's Palace
From the late 7th century until the late 18th, Venice had a system of doges, who acted as elected leaders of the region. Doge’s Palace – now known as Palazzo Ducale – was built in the 14th century as a residence for the doge, and for other political bodies. It was a venue used for debates, a court of law, grand events such as balls, and even had prison cells on the ground floor. The beautiful palace is located in Piazza San Marco, and was opened to visitors in 1923.
Island of Burano
Within Venice’s lagoon is the picturesque island of Burano, well known for its colourful buildings and pretty canals. First inhabited in the 6th century, Burano has long been a small fishing community, which rose in prominence with the production of lace in the 16th century – a tradition it is still known for today. Burano is a gorgeous spot to wander around, enjoy a gelato, and browse the fabulous range of intricate lace work which is available to purchase in varying forms.
Brindisi
DAY 708 Sep 2019
Time at Port: from 1 PM to 6 PM
Found on the ‘heel’ of Italy, the location of Brindisi has caused it to be known by some as the ‘Gateway to the East’. The 15th century Castello Alfonsino di Brindisi was built to protect the city, and later became a station for the Italian navy. This and the Church of Santa Maria del Casale reveal much of Brindisi’s – and indeed Italy’s – history, the church being of importance during The Crusades. It’s also possible to learn more in the Brindisi Archaeological Museum, which is home to important relics including the Bronze Statues of Brindisi which were only discovered a few decades ago, but are believed to be thousands of years old.
Things to do in Brindisi:
Church of Santa Maria del Casale
Built in the late-13th century by Prince Filippo I of Taranto and his wife, in the year 1310 this church became the setting for trials against the Knights Templar crusaders of Sicily. The tribunal was commissioned by French Pope Clement V, but was quashed just two years later. The building itself showcases Romanesque-gothic architectural styles, and it was made a national monument in 1875.
Castello Alfonsino
This castle is sometimes referred to as Red Castle or Aragones Castle. It’s located on Sant’Andrea Island, and was first constructed in the late 15th century as a defence post to protect the city. A sea fortress was then added in the 16th century, as a base for the military.
Archeological Museum
The Provincial, or Francesco Ribezzo, Archaeological Museum is dedicated to this celebrated archaeologist and scholar who was from this area of Italy. It was founded in 1884, and today plays host to an impressive array of sculptures, tablets, coins, and other artefacts including the ancient Bronze Statues of Brindisi, which were discovered by divers in 1992 in the nearby Punta del Serrone.
