New England Explorer Self Drive Land Tour

New England Explorer Self Drive Tour

Choose from Standard, Upgrade or Inn Accommodation for your tour

Day 1 of Land Tour – Boston

Arrive at Boston Airport and pick up your rental car. Drive to your first nights hotel.

Day 2 of Land Tour – Boston

Consider ditching the car and travel into downtown Boston via the Metro system that way there will be no challenge in finding a parking garage or struggling with the heavy Boston traffic. You have a full day to explore Boston, the cradle of American liberty. The Revolutionary era comes to life along the Freedom Trail walking route. Visit the haunts of the patriots who stoked the fires of democracy throughout the Colonies. Spend time around the harbour and be sure to visit the site of the Boston Tea Party.

Day 3 of Land Tour – Boston – Coastal Maine

Along the route north of Boston lies almost four centuries of history, as well as some of the coast's finest beaches and seascapes. First stop is Salem, the location of the infamous witch trials. Then drive along the coast to the charming harbour towns of Gloucester and Rockport. Enjoy the old-time seaport atmosphere of Portsmouth, NH and its wealth of historic buildings before crossing into Maine. Pass through Kennebunkport, summer home to Presidents and enjoy exploring Portland, Maine's largest city before arriving at your hotel between Portland and Kennebunkport.

Day 4 of Land Tour – Coastal Maine – White Mountains

Leaving the coast behind continue inland to the beautiful scenery of the White Mountains ‘the rooftop of New England’. There are 48 peaks in the range and New Hampshire boasts the Presidential range. If you have time take a detour to take the Cog Railway to the top of Mount Washington. The area is stunning with thick forests carpeting the hillsides and charming villages and lakes dotted along the way. There are many covered bridges to discover in New Hampshire and there some near North Conway. Accommodation will be in Gorham or North Conway depending on your choices.

Day 5 of Land Tour – White Mountains – Stowe

Today, traverse the White Mountains that divide the New England states of New Hampshire and Vermont. The mountains are home to bears, moose, wild turkey and deer. This route takes you through some of New England's most beautiful scenery. Drive by Lyndonville and see Willey's General Store in Greensboro before continuing through Craftsbury, to Stowe. See picture-perfect villages and some of Vermont's famous covered bridges.

Day 6 of Land Tour – Stowe – Green Mountains – Connecticut River Valley

Your drive today takes you alongside the Green Mountains of Vermont, part of the Appalachian Mountain range that stretches from Quebec in the north to Alabama in the south and through the Connecticut River Valley. Step into Old Sturbridge Village and find yourself transported back in time. In historic households and shops, at water-powered mills and on working farms, explore the everyday tasks and seasonal celebrations of early 19th-century New England. Accommodation is in Mystic, CT.

Day 7 of Land Tour – Connecticut River Valley – Cape Cod

This morning continue along the Massachusetts coast. Many of America's most prominent families - from the Astors to the Vanderbilts - have summered in Newport. Many of their homes are now preserved and open for tours. Continue along the coast on your way to the Cape. Explore magnificent Cape Cod with its high cliffs, rolling dunes, broad beaches, walking trails, picturesque villages and delicious seafood. This peninsula is a beloved vacation spot for visitors and natives alike. Stop in Plymouth, a living panorama of Pilgrim and Colonial times and see the Mayflower II* (*Mayflower II returns to Plymouth for 2020). Accommodation is near Hyannis.

Day 8 of Land Tour – Cape Cod – Boston

The drive to Boston is short, but plan your journey wisely because of the rush hour traffic heading towards Boston. Return your rental car and transfer to the terminal for your flight or further transportation to the port for embarkation.

An amazing cruise! So many highlights despite extremely rough seas at the beginning but with excellent navigation made by the Captain we were kept safe and escaped even rougher seas by sheltering in inside channels. Loved sailing through Glacier alley, Darwin channel and around Cape Horn. It was good to hear the ships horn blast as we passed the Horn and it was a nice touch to be given a certificate to say that we had been around the Horn. The cruise director Kevin gave very informative talks about each place we visited and the ship had very good evening entertainment on the stage on deck 5. As we left the ship there was a line up of staff from the ship including Kevin to see us off and we thought this was a very personal touch.

My friend and I enjoyed every minute of our cruise on board Zaandam, sailing from Chile around Cape Horn and finishing in Buenos Aires. The vast majority of the staff team were excellent and looked after us well. Small criticisms were: The shore excursions are very expensive The food and service in the dining room was not as good as previous experiences with P&O on Oriana The wine was expensive The ship is getting a wee bit dated That said, I would sail with HAL again, even on Zaandam.
