Widely believed to be the most southerly point of South America for a long time, and a destination marking the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, Cape Horn is a stunning headland on Hornos Island – one of the larger landmasses in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago – known for unusual rock formations, tumultuous weather, and its significant role in maritime trading from the 1700s to the early 20th century. Initially discovered by Spanish explorers in 1526, and eventually first fully rounded by Dutch navigators for the East India Company in 1616 – who then named this destination Kaap Hoorn, after Hoorn in the Netherlands – Cape Horn is a rocky outlet steeped in maritime history. Navigating around Cape Horn was once a dangerous feat, with rough waters and intense winds making this trade route a valuable one – when navigated successfully, anyway. Rendered largely obsolete as a trade route by the Panama Canal, now Cape Horn represents a breathtaking scenic cruising experience you can enjoy without worrying about the treacherous sailing conditions.

Cape Horn Monument
A sculpture paying homage to the sailors who lost their lives attempting to navigate around Cape Horn, the Cape Horn monument stands along a lighthouse and the Stella Maris, a small Catholic chapel. It stands 24 feet tall on a hilltop roughly 165 feet above sea level.
Black-Browed Albatross Sightings
A highlight among the seabirds you can see when sailing around Cape Horn, black-browed albatrosses are among the most populous of its family – but no less impressive to see while at sea. With a wingspan of 200 cm to 240 cm and a natural lifespan of over 70 years, these bright white seabirds have a dark eyestripe and broad black edging to the underside of their wings.
Southern Rockhopper Penguin Spotting
A vulnerable penguin species often found in subantarctic waters like those surrounding Cape Horn, these are among the smallest species of its family; with breeding colonies around Cape Horn, you may spot some of these incredible animals during your sailing. They’re known for their bright yellow eyebrows, ending in long yellow plumes, and red eyes.

Nicknamed the “End of the World”, Ushuaia is a charming windswept city on the southernmost tip of South America and an important port of call for cruise adventures to Antarctica. Tierra del Fuego National Park
An expansive national park that protects nearly 70,000 hectares of land, the Tierra del Fuego National Park combines marine areas, forests, and mountains to create a truly fascinating place worth exploring if you have the time while visiting Ushuaia. Here, you’ll find everything from luscious woodland and tumbling waterfalls to dramatic mountains and serene lakes. Throughout, you’ll also find evidence of the Yámanas, the first inhabitants of these lands, which serves to remind everyone who spends some time here that this region has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. With so much to see, this is easily the best place to visit if you’re looking to switch off and embrace the great outdoors.
Museo del Fin del Mundo
If you want to learn more about the city of Ushuaia, Museo del fin del Mundo is the perfect place to go. A living heritage museum that explores the history and culture of Ushuaia and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the End of the World Museum (which is its name in English) is home to numerous exhibitions that explore the native history of this region, the local fauna and flora, the traditions and customs of the people here, and even some of the shipwrecks that have happened here over the centuries. Found in parts of the National Bank building and Old Government House, these impressive buildings only serve to highlight the importance of the museum and its contents.
Museo de la Ciudad
Also known as Casa Pena, this former private residence has served as the City Museum in Ushuaia since 2009; with an interesting selection of informative exhibits and historic items, this museum offers visitors a fantastic insight into what ordinary life was like in this city throughout the 20th century – which is when it was originally occupied by the Pena family.

La Mano de Punta del Este
A sculpture completed in 1982 by Chilean artist Mario Irarrazabal, La Mano (The Hand) has quickly become one of Uruguay’s most recognizable landmarks; depicting five human fingers emerging from the sands of Brava Beach, La Mano represents the dangers of drowning in the rougher waters of La Barra – which also make this a prime spot for surfing.

A monumental example of neo-classical architecture in the heart of Montevideo, the Legislative Palace of Uruguay acts as the meeting place of the General Assembly of Uruguay, the seat of the legislative branch of the Uruguayan government, and a remarkable landmark to see when you visit. Built between 1904 and 1925, it was constructed to commemorate 100 years of Uruguayan independence.
Obelisk of Montevideo
Built in 1930 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Constitution of Uruguay as a homage to the original members of the General Assembly, this three-sided structure stretches 40 metres up and is flanked by three bronze structures representing Law, Liberty, and Force. In 1983, it was the site of Rio de Libertad – the nation’s largest demonstration ever, demanding an end to the civil-military dictatorship in place at the time.
Palacio Salvo
Standing 95 metres tall, this stunning structure takes advantage of eclectic architectural designs to deliver one of the most remarkable buildings in Montevideo. Built with the intention of being a hotel in 1928, it’s now a mixture of private residences and office spaces – though tours of the building are available at select times during the day.

Among the world’s most populous cities and the largest urban area by population outside of Asia, São Paulo is the financial capital of Brazil and a destination offering everyone an incredible adventure when they arrive. To say there’s a lot for you to enjoy when you’re in São Paulo would be an understatement and a half. A stone’s throw from the stunning sandy beaches of Praia Grande and Santos, and surrounded by stunning parks and hiking routes boasting breathtaking views, those of you wanting to spend some time in nature will have no trouble doing that while visiting this remarkable city. Beyond that, though, you’ll find all the attractions and historical landmarks you would expect in a city of this scale with such a vibrant history – having been founded by Jesuit priests in 1554. São Paulo Cathedral, while a recent construction, is no less breathtaking than the other religious buildings in Brazil – not to mention the fact that it’s considered the fourth-largest neo-Gothic cathedral in the world. You’ll also find the Interlagos Circuit, home to the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix, in the heart of the city; if you’re a racing fan, this is worth visiting whether it’s race day or not. Home to an abundance of everything, from restaurants and bars to museums and more, everyone will find something they enjoy when they visit São Paulo.

Catavento Museum
A modern interactive science museum in the heart of São Paulo, the Cavento Museum is an intriguing attraction to explore when visiting this incredible city. Housed in the unique Palacio das Industrias, an impressive building built between 1911 and 1924 that was once the seat of the Legislative Assembly in São Paulo, the museum features exhibits on the dinosaurs which once inhabited the region, human ingenuity, the universe, and more. It uses state-of-the-art virtual technology to enhance the experience, and you’ll find plenty of interesting things both within this museum and in the grounds around it.
Santos
A city just south of São Paulo, Santos is the perfect place for a beach day when you’re travelling to the financial capital of Brazil; located mostly on Ilha de São Vicente, it’s home to a series of stunning beaches and the world’s largest beachfront garden – a vibrant space stretching almost 6,000 yards along the coastline. Home to the Coffee Museum, a football memorial to some of history’s greatest soccer players, and historical landmarks like the Biquinha de Anchieta (an elaborate fountain monument), there’s plenty to enjoy if you’re looking for something a little different to São Paulo.
São Paulo Cathedral
Built on the site of São Paulo’s original church, which dates back to 1589, São Paulo Cathedral is a modern interpretation of a traditional Gothic cathedral and it stands today as the fourth-largest neo-Gothic cathedral in the world. An impressive two-spire structure that is over 300 ft tall at its highest point, the cathedral is decorated with cultural imagery of Brazilian produce and native animals, alongside traditional Catholic designs. With the original 1912 plans for the cathedral found during renovations, what we see today is a faithful representation of what the cathedral would’ve looked like upon completion over 100 years prior.

Sitting on the Costa Verde (Green Coast), Parati is a tourist hotspot known for its historical town centre, stunning section of coastline, and dramatic mountainous backdrop. Interestingly, the entire town is listed as a National Historic Landmark by IPHAN, with over 80% of the area being protected. The Cairucu Environmental Protection Area, for example, is an important remnant of the Atlantic Forest biome. Meanwhile, the Juatinga Ecological Reserve protects a peninsula and the traditional lifestyle of numerous villages along the coastline around Parati, and the Taimos Ecological Station monitors the marine ecosystem of the area and the nearby Ilha Grande Bay. A charming colonial town with a calmer atmosphere than Brazil’s other coastline settlements, Parati is the perfect place to soak in the sunshine and appreciate the stunning scenery surrounding you. Rest and relaxation are important to every holiday, and you’ll find plenty of that here.

Forte Defensor
Built in 1703 and equipped with six cannons, this fortress was constructed in an effort to defend the settlement’s important commercial warehouses. However, it was left in ruin for decades after the region’s economic decline. Reconstructed in 1822, it’s believed that this is where the first nucleus of the town Parati began. One of seven forts constructed around the harbour here, this is just one of two surviving fortifications.
Serra da Bocaina National Park
Created in 1971, this sprawling national park is approximately 104,000 hectares in size and home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including: pines, trumpet trees, palm trees, cats, sloths, monkeys, snakes, and birds. Several species of amphibians are also only known to be found in the park and the surrounding area, including the Bocaina dwarf frog and Bocaina big tooth frog.

A forest-covered island around 12km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Ilha Grande is the perfect destination for the explorers among you. It’s home to several well-maintained and well-signposted walking trails which will afford you the opportunity to admire the island’s incredible wildlife – of which, you’ll find everything from parrots and hummingbirds to monkeys – and stunning scenery. With roughly 63% of the island covered by the Ilha Grande State Park, and numerous smaller reserves in place protecting the flora, fauna, and traditional communities that reside here, 87% of the island has a protected status. While you won’t find too many attractions here, this is a great place to get in touch with nature and explore a unique environment that – in part, at least – is endangered.

Lopes Mendes
An extended palm tree-lined white-sand beach with crystal-clear waters, this beach is the definition of paradise and just one of the beaches you can take advantage of when you’re on Ilha Grande. If you’re looking to unwind in the sunshine with sand between your toes, this is the perfect place to do just that.
Candido Mendes Prison
Now abandoned, this prison was once home to some of Brazil’s worst – until it was closed in 1994. Reachable by following a walking trail from Vila de Dois Rois, this prison is the setting for a whole host of escapee stories – with one of the most famous being Escadinho, who escaped via helicopter!

Armacao dos Buzios, a popular tourist destination in the state of Rio de Janeiro that surprisingly remained relatively unknown to the wider world until the 1960s, is a highlight of any South America cruise and one holiday hotspot you’ll want to look forward to. Home to a staggering number of beaches, this peninsula serves sun loungers and surfers equally – with beaches on the west coast calmer and quieter, while beaches on the east coast are home to rougher seas and perfect for water sports. A popular excursion for the affluent among Rio de Janeiro’s residents, you’ll find Buzios is home to an active nightlife, sensational restaurants, and plenty of shopping. An urban paradise away from the hustle and bustle of a major city, you won’t regret disembarking when you arrive here.

Rua das Pedras
Rua das Pedras is a cobblestoned main avenue through Buzios that plays host to an abundance of entertainment venues, restaurants, and acts as the heart of the area when it comes to revelry and excitement.
Orla Bardot
An extension of Rua das Pedras, a main street that acts as the heart of Buzios, Orla Bardot is a stunning stretch of oceanfront that links two of the oldest areas of town together. You’ll also see several statues along this section of oceanfront, including representations of actress Brigitte Bardot and former president Juscelino Kubitschek.

With an impressive population of nearly 7 million people, Rio de Janeiro is a bustling seaside city that’s known for its iconic attractions, including Copacabana Beach and the 38-metre tall Christ the Redeemer statue which stands atop Mount Corcovado. Not only is Rio de Janeiro known for its attractions, but it’s also host to the yearly Carnaval festival and is home to dozens of mouth-watering restaurants and street food. Alongside Copacabana Beach and the Christ the Redeemer statue, another must see in Rio de Janeiro is Sugarloaf Mountain.

Copacabana Beach
Spanning nearly 2 1⁄2 miles, Copacabana Beach is an iconic beach that features golden sands, dark blue waters and is surrounded by a vibrant promenade, resorts and restaurants. The moment you arrive at this popular beach you’ll be in awe of the incredible mountains that tower over it.
Christ the Redeemer
Constructed in 1931, this extraordinary statue depicts Jesus Christ in an Art Deco style. Created by Paul Landowski, a renowned French sculptor, it’s an incredibly popular attraction to visit whilst in the city. Overlooking the city, it can be seen from several areas of Rio de Janeiro and makes for a great photo opportunity.
Sugarloaf Mountain
One of the highest peaks in the city, located at the start of Guanabara Bay, the peak of Sugarloaf Mountain can be visited by cable car. Sitting at a height of 396 metres, the views you’ll get from Sugarloaf Mountain will take your breath away.
