3 Roatan Island
Roatan Island
Roatan, Honduras is a small island only two miles wide at its widest and about 35 miles long. It is a tropical island with all the vegetation one would expect. The main town of Coxen Hole is considered to be poor by most visitors, but its population is quite happy and content. One notices that many of its residents are of Caribbean island decent rather than Hispanic. Roatan is blessed with numerous beaches of a fabulous quality, and nowhere on the island are they more beautiful than on the West End.

Visit Costa Maya, an ancient Mayan maritime port and gateway to lush rain forests and blue lagoons. You could trek through the jungle to discover the ancient Mayan cities of Chacchoben and Kohunlich, and admire the marvellous temple adorned with magnificent stone masks. Don’t miss stunning La Palapa Beach, where you can snorkel in crystal clear waters or simply relax and soak up the sun. The local cuisine is delicious, so try Ceviche (raw conch with prawns and octopus marinated in lime juice with tomato, onion, cilantro and tostadas chips…

In comparison with other cruises this was of lesser quality. With the exception of Havana, port destinations only really offered seaside high street shopping and few places for real sightseeing. The optional excursions were expensive and most required the signing of a waiver which signifies that problems might occur. The sea at times was rough and the Marella Discovery 2 was not as stable as one would have expected. The initial muster for emergency procedures seemed haphazard and poorly dealt with. Dining experiences were marred by chilly air conditioning and unduly intrusive loud music (our complaints were ignored). The sunbed rule for towels was not enforced. Cabins were in need of some refurbishment; bed linen and towels were stained/threadbare in places. Having made negative comments, there were the positives of friendly staff, reasonable and varied food, sufficient activity on board and good tender facilities ashore. The weather was good throughout. Sadly this cruise did not measure up to expectations and was a reminder that what appears to be a bargain needs to be evaluated against quality and experience. The rating of 3 reflects this.

Everything went to plan really enjoyed the trip good food excellent drinks package, good entertainment, met some lovely people. Was really proud of the captain, picking up 14 migrants taking them on board, completing all security checks and off course keeping all passengers informed of decisions made. Well done to all Rose Marie
