Once an impressive temple to both the Greek goddess Artemis and Roman goddess Diana (at different times), the Temple of Artemis is an ancient ruin in Ephesus. Estimated to have been constructed in the 8th century BC, the temple was destroyed by a flood in the 7th century BC, rebuilt circa 550 BC over ten years, then destroyed by an arsonist in 356 BC. Regarded as the third-largest ancient library of the ancient world and one of the few surviving examples of the great libraries that dominated major cities in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, the Library of Celsus is a marvel of ancient architecture. Commissioned circa 110 AD by Roman consul Tiberius Julius Aquila Polemaeanus as a monument to his late father Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, this incredible structure didn’t survive too long after its construction; the interior was destroyed in 262 AD and the facade toppled following an earthquake in the 10th or 11th century. Excavated in the early 20th century, the facade of the library was reconstructed by archaeologists in the 1970s.

Constructed in the 17th century by Okuz Mehmet Pasa, Kaleici Camii is one of the most impressive mosques in Turkey and a fantastic example of Ottoman architecture in today’s world; with an interior adored with intricate calligraphy and ornate tile work, it’s easy to get lost in the stunning Islamic art on display here. You’ll also find this site surrounded with local shops, cafes, and restaurants, only enhancing a visit here.
