After having a fantastic cruise last year we booked the same cruise again this year however it was very disappointing. Our cabin was very noisy and when my husband informed reception to voice his concerns, as 14 nights is a long time to suffer the noise, and asked if anything could be done he was given two ear plugs! We had at least 5 nights with no sleep at all and apart from St Petersburgh where we were docked for two nights, we had a very disturbed sleep on the other nights. The toilet in our cabin flooded one night. Luckily we were still in the cabin so my husband fixed it. There was also a few of the toilets on the ship which were always very smelly. We had a drinks package but the crew looked very tired and it took ages to be served with drinks. The food was ok. Standards were definitely not as good as last year.

Cabin fine, Steward excellent. Balkan staff in restaurant generally unsmiling and lacking the necessary language skills. Hard work explaining needs. Some slightly antagonistic reception staff. There may have been a few UK staff aboard but we never found them. As vegetarians we found the food difficult and repetitive. There's a limit to the amount of pineapple and melon one can eat. The 'entertainment' was appalling (apart from the two since acts) and the direction, presentation and musicians even worse. The port visit s were good and not rushed. Overall, out of ten, six.

My second time on Magellan (first was last year when I did the six week Amazon, west Indies and Azores). We booked the Christmas cruise to the West Indies and Mexico. After an unfortunate start (the CMV coach from Victoria to Tilbury suffered a puncture, and we had to wait for a replacement, causing us to almost miss the boat!), we went on to have a fantastic cruise with CMV. An important part of any cruise, for us, is the dining experience and we had requested a table of eight. Unfortunately there were only two other people on our designated table in the Kensington, so we were happy to accept an invitation from some new friends we had made on the ship to join them in the Waldorf - we were lucky to meet so many interesting and friendly people. The Magellan is a bit of a 'no frills' ship, which is reflected in the competitive fares, and lots of people were moaning about this and that - mostly fairly trivial stuff. The itinerary was great, with the exception of La Romana, with a good range of excursions on offer (mostly reasonable value). We went 'off piste' in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and decided to do our own thing and book a local taxi to the Dunns River Falls and then a bit of sightseeing and on to a beach, however we were squarely ripped off by the taxi driver, but had a good time anyway. Food was very good, and service generally OK. Pleased to report that the Air Conditioning on this ship has improved, and there was no sign of the mystery bug that seemed to be going round the ship last year
