We found Koningsdam to be a little too crowded in certain areas, particularly in the entertainment areas (bars etc). We also thought our stateroom was smaller than average with a very uncomfortable sofa with arms that were attached by press studs. On the plus side the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was very nice with an excellent shower and nice products. There was sufficient storage space for two and a nice vanity area with good hairdryer and makeup mirror provided. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Our room steward was very pleasant, as were most of the staff, and our room was always lovely and clean when we returned each morning and evening. One main criticism would be the noise levels. We were awoken every morning between 6. 30 and 7 by the steward preparing to clean the rooms. The problem was the service door was only a few feet from our stateroom door and so we could hear all the comings and going’s of staff. Sadly this is not something you can plan to avoid when booking as such entrances are not shown on deck plans. We could also hear our neighbors talking and laughing quite often during the day, thankfully not so much in the evening. It seams the staterooms are not very well insulated against noise levels.
The Dutch Cafe was a very popular venue however as a result there was always a queue, resulting in a 10/15 minute wait to be served. The only bar we really enjoyed was the Ocean Bar but again we would often wait for up to 15 minutes to be served, 20 minutes on one occasion.
Although there was a lot of entertainment on board each day we found very little of interest. This is not a criticism however I think because of the nature of the itinerary much of what was available was aimed more at families. We are a retired couple and prefer a more adult vibe.
We ate in the MDR for the majority of our meals and found the food to be very good. Service was generally fast and pleasant and we thought the layout of the restaurant was good. Tables for two were well positioned with a decent space between each table, unlike on other ships we have sailed on.
For our speciality meal we chose the Pinnacle Grill restaurant which was excellent. Again, service was very good and the food was also very well presented. Portions were generous wherever we ate.
We booked an excursion in each port and found them to be very well organized. Everything happened at the right time and we definitely got what we paid for. Again, all staff were very friendly and helpful.
On balance we enjoyed our experience however if we were to book another HAL cruise I think we would choose a different ship, perhaps one of the older, smaller ships.
The one thing that really put a dampner on our trip was the experience we had with Air Canada on the flight home. Our first flight was cancelled resulting in us having to spend an extra night in an airport hotel, only to find our replacement flight was also cancelled, though subsequently reinstated, but not before a very stressful night not knowing quite what was going to happen next. To top it all we arrived home after a 14 hour journey to find both our suitcases were still in Vancouver. Luckily they were located and are now on their way home but not before yet another stressful time having to go through the process of reporting the issue and waiting hopefully for their return.Read More

It was spacious with nice decor. Food was good in buffet and restaurant. We always managed to get seats. Hygene standards were high with hand washing facilities as you enter buffet area. Staff were friendly and helpful. We only went to the theatre one night. It was OK. The choice of food was good but not of the highest quality at all times. The entertainment was disappointing so we retired early most evenings. I think the excursions were expensive and not as professional as we would expect. We usually choose the same table to eat in the main dining room so that we have the opportunity to get to know the staff. Service was ok but should have been excellent. The itinerary was brilliant and a wonderful experience.Read More

Service in dining room was good though the que was busy at times. The Lido dining felt like a scrum and difficult to find seating. The bars and service slow. The stateroom was always clean and tidy. Entertainment was varied and average, not into casinos bingo and quizzes. Although the talks on wildlife and Alaska itself were interesting. We booked excursions and these were good except for the Ketchikan Saxman Native Village Dance. Not value for money. The lumberjack Show was good. Though we were left to make our own way there without much direction and explanation what to do.Read More
