Time at Port: from 8 AM to 8 PM
Callao is a charming seaside city in Peru, just a short distance from the nation’s capital, home to stunning sandy beaches (primarily on the La Punta peninsula), a vibrant culture, flavourful Peruvian food, and an extensive naval history. As a vital Spanish settlement throughout the colonial era, and a city home to Peru’s main airport and seaport, there is just so much to discover and enjoy when you travel to this bustling urban centre. Whether you’re looking for a quieter visit, soaking in the atmosphere of the city while you wander its history-rich streets, or something a little more lively with boutique shopping and bars where there’s always a party, Lima has it all.
Things to do in Lima (Callao):
Fortaleza del Real Felipe
One of the few existing military fortifications in Peru and the largest military construction by the Spanish in the Americas, the Fortaleza del Real Felipe (Real Felipe Fortress) is an impressive 18th century castle that now houses the Peruvian Army Museum. Throughout history, it has played a pivotal role in both national and international events – with it being a major flashpoint of conflict during colonial power struggles in the 18th century, Peruvian separatist struggles against Spanish colonialism in the 19th century, and the decolonisation of the Americas – given that the loss of this military stronghold in Peru was among the dominos that led to Peruvian independence.
Callao Monumental Turismo historico
A colourful cultural hub in the heart of Callao, this district of the seaport city is home to an array of contemporary art galleries, boutique shopping, and restaurants; with so much culture to immerse yourself in here, and some fantastic authentic Peruvian food to enjoy, this area of Callao offers you an incredible insight into the arts and music that make this city – and indeed Peru as a whole – so special.

A unique port city in northern Chile, Arica is a popular spot for surfing and watersports, with welcoming turquoise waters off the curved Playa Las Machas and Playa Chinchorror beaches. You’ll also find calmer waters more suitable to swimmers and kayaking in this city’s southern beaches, Playa La Lisera and Playa Brava to name a couple of examples. Surrounded by rewarding hiking routes, it’s a fantastic place to stretch your legs when you disembark. A fascinating destination ideal for travellers who want to connect more actively with the great outdoors, Arica is an interesting port of call on South American cruises.
Things to do in Arica:
Morro de Arica
An impressive near-vertical rock formation overlooking downtown Arica, the views from atop Morro de Arica are truly unrivaled. Standing roughly 140 metres above sea level, this rock formation was the last bulwark of defence for the Peruvian forces garrisoned in the city during the War of the Pacific in the late 19th century and it’s now regarded as a national monument. With Arica’s near-constant warm weather with little-to-no-rainfall, a stroll to this rock formation’s summit to marvel at the sweeping views of the city is a great way to soak up some of the Chilean sunshine here
Catedral de San Marcos (Saint Mark’s Cathedral)
A stunning Catholic Church built circa 1876 over the original church in Arica, which was destroyed in an earthquake almost a decade prior, Catedral de San Marcos is a brightly-coloured Gothic Revival church with an impressive exterior and a rather quaint interior. Interestingly, the building was originally designed to be built in Ancon, a seaside town sitting just north of the Peruvian capital Lima, but was built in Arica following the requests of a local women’s committee looking to replace the earthquake-destroyed church.
Museo de Sitio Colon 10
A small museum on an archeological site in the heart of Arica, this unique attraction is home to several artificially mummified bodies, which are associated with the Chinchorro culture of the region. Discovered during preliminary soil studies ahead of the construction of a new building, the vulnerable conditions of the remains and continued archeological work led to the establishment of the museum – something that aims to preserve and enhance this remarkable archeological heritage.

The ship Costa Deliziosa was beautiful, very Italian with lots of marble and very blingey! Premium cabins were excellent, with good balcony, plenty of space. Would have liked an adults only swimming pool as it was difficult to get a swim for jumping in children - also in an ideal world would have liked a bigger swimming pool. Service was excellent, and there were lots of different places on board to go to. Perhaps in reflection would prefer a smaller ship with less people - the Italians were rather noisy around pool, lido etc., although very good natured. It was good to be able to order breakfast in cabin as buffet was rather too busy- hectic even. Dinners were good, waiters excellent and it was nice to be put on a table with other English people of which there were very few on board. The entertainment in the theatre was not of such a high standard as have had for example on Norweigen Spirit, so think there is room for improvement there. However all the crew and staff were really good and information was good.

This was our first time on a cruise liner and it far exceeded our expections. I find it is impossible to say anything negative about the ship or the staff. The cabin was comfortable and kept very clean by our steward. All the staff were very attentive and made our stay completely stress free and comfortable. Out of 10 I would give a score of 11. Thank you for such a wonderful cruise, we shall return.

However, with Lima so close, tours to the Peruvian capital are a must when visiting. An incredible city brimming with culture and history, you’ll find all the modern comforts of a capital here alongside fascinating landmarks, intriguing museums, and more.

Arica
DAY 26
20 Dec 2025
Time at Port: from 9 AM to 9:30 PM
A unique port city in northern Chile, Arica is a popular spot for surfing and watersports, with welcoming turquoise waters off the curved Playa Las Machas and Playa Chinchorror beaches. You’ll also find calmer waters more suitable to swimmers and kayaking in this city’s southern beaches, Playa La Lisera and Playa Brava to name a couple of examples. Beyond this, while the beaches are also fantastic for sun lounging when the weather is warm, Arica has a lot more to offer visitors. Chile’s northernmost city and a literal stone’s throw from the nation’s border with Peru, the culture and cuisine you’ll find in Arica is unique; and, with the city itself sitting in the point where the Azapa Valley and Lluta River converge – both of which cut through the Atacama Desert, the landscapes here are dramatically different to what you would see further south in Chile.
