3 Baltra, Galapagos
Baltra, Galapagos
Your flight from Quito or Guayaquil lands at either Baltra or San Cristobal airports in the Galapagos Islands. The Baltra airport was originally constructed by the U.S. military during World War II as a base to protect the Panama Canal from enemy attack. During this period most of the indigenous fauna of the island was exterminated. Land iguanas have only recently been successfully re-introduced and can be seen near the Baltra airport. Baltra is currently an Ecuadorian naval base and is not within the boundaries of Galapagos National Park. The San Cristobal airport is just a few minutes outside of the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (the Capital of the Galapagos).
3 Daphne Island
Daphne Island
Actually two islands known as Daphne Major and Daphne Minor, Islas Daphne is one of the more accessible Galapagos Islands. Easily reached by most tour boats and cruises, visiting this island is unfortunately not so simple. With limited visitor access put in place by the Galapagos National Park Service, no more than 12 people at a time are allowed on the islands.

8 Puerto Baquerizo, San Cristobal
Puerto Baquerizo, San Cristobal
The fifth largest of the Galapagos Islands in terms of size, Isla San Cristobal has the second largest human settlement of this volcanic island chain. Also known as Chatham Island, Isla San Cristobal is important because it is home to the provincial capital of the Galapagos, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno which sits on the island’s southwestern end. Around 560 sq km in size, Isla San Cristobal is named in honor of Christopher Columbus, and is the second most popular island after Isla Santa Cruz, as there is a domestic airport here as well as a number of hotels, tour/travel companies, restaurants, and bars.
