The Royal Wedding and the Couple’s Infatuation with Africa

clock 16th May 2018 | comment0 Comments

Once again the country is buzzing with excitement and curiosity, not only about the Royal Wedding, but also the Royal Honeymoon. As more details are released about the big day itself, so far there is only speculation about the honeymoon destination, but a few African countries sit at the top of the bookie’s favourites. Read on to find out how you can celebrate the Royal Wedding on your cruise, and why you should follow in the couple’s footsteps to Africa.

Celebrating the Royal Wedding on a Cruise

A number of cruise lines are embracing the merriment and thrills of the big day, and will be screening the event onboard. Some will also be celebrating with a few fabulous extras;

Princess Cruises – 17 of the fleet will be showing the wedding on poolside screens, as well as bars and lounges. There will also be some Royal-themed parties, menus, and quizzes to take part in.

Cruise & Maritime – 3 ships will screen the wedding proceedings, and there will also be quintessential British afternoon tea parties, quizzes, a 60s British music dance party, and more.

Cunard - the wedding will be screened across the fleet, and guests can partake in a Royal Wedding afternoon tea, bespoke celebration cocktails and champagne, a themed dinner and keepsake menu, and a slice of cake which has been modelled on Harry and Meghan’s.

P&O Cruises – in addition to screenings of the wedding, all ships will be decorated with flags and official bunting, and guests will have a glass of champagne to toast, as well as extra American and English foods with afternoon tea, and a Meghan Sparkle cocktail.

From the Wedding to the Honeymoon

It is thought that the newlyweds won’t embark on their honeymoon straight after the big day, however as clues come out about where they intend to go, we can’t help but feel inspired. Due to the love that both Harry and Meghan are known to have for Africa, there are several destinations in the continent that are thought to be in the running for the honeymoon, with Namibia taking the top spot.

Why visit Namibia?

The country gets its name from the vast Namib dessert, which is one of the oldest on earth. It stretches inland from the Atlantic coastline along the entire length of the country, and provides some truly incredible scenery. As well as this awe-inspiring attraction, Namibia offers some great wildlife-watching opportunities in the north. Etosha National Park, Damaraland, and the Caprivi Strip are all fantastic regions where visitors can see lions, elephants, and rhinos to name a few. As well as scenery and wildlife, in Namibia you’ll find friendly and welcoming locals, and some incredible new cuisine to try. Take a look at this fantastic chance to see Namibia on a cruise with Voyages to Antiquity.

Where else in Africa could the Royal Couple be honeymooning?

While Namibia is a firm favourite, both Harry and Meghan are known to have a fondness for many African nations. They’re both passionate about charity work, which has taken Meghan to Rwanda in the past, while supporting a clean water campaign, and has taken Harry to countries including Botswana, which is thought to be his home away from home. Here he’s worked with animal protection charities, as well as HIV/Aids projects.

Africa is an incredibly rich continent with so much to offer. See the exciting wildlife on safari in Kruger or the Serengeti, try some delicious bottles in the wine regions of South Africa, and relax in the gorgeous tropical atmosphere of Madagascar. Princess Cruises' Alaskan Treehouse

clock 14th February 2018 | comment0 Comments

Regarded by many as the experts of cruising in Alaska, Princess Cruises are constantly finding new ways to immerse their guests in the beauty and spirit of this part of the world. Their latest innovation certainly helps to achieve this – allowing visitors the opportunity to be up close to the wilderness and enjoy the vast views. Welcome, the Denali Treehouse.

Built at their Mount McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, the treehouse boasts some incredible views of the surrounding Denali National Park. At around 500 square feet there is ample room for guests to mingle and relax with a hot chocolate, or don a pair of binoculars to watch the local birdlife. The treehouse is also the venue for various hosted activities;

• Meet and Greet with Todd Huston – join world-record holding Todd as he recounts the stories of the first successful ascension of nearby Mount Denali while you make the short hike to the treehouse. Here you’ll be able to mingle and absorb the views with hot drinks and doughnuts.

• Sappy Hour – a wonderfully informative event in which guests will be taught about local products made with nearby spruce and birch trees. Sample a taste of the unique rare birch syrups.

• Trivia – each day an Alaska-themed quiz will be held in the treehouse, where you can get to know fellow travellers, as well as this rich North American land.

The treehouse has been built with reclaimed Alaskan wood from Ketchikan and Palmer, and was featured on Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters TV show.

Get to Know Princess Cruises with Phillip Schofield

clock 27th September 2017 | comment0 Comments

Updated March 2019

In April 2017 Phillip Schofield became the very first UK brand ambassador for Princess Cruises, and since then has been exploring just about everything that the cruise line has to offer.

With behind-the-scenes access and time spent with the Princess Cruises crew, Phillip has a unique insight into the industry and has become thoroughly acquainted with the wonderful world of cruising. Interestingly enough, before this Phillip had never been on a cruise before, and so Princess quickly remedied this by sending him and his wife to the Mediterranean onboard Royal Princess.

First Impressions as a New-to-Cruise Guest

With no experience of cruising whatsoever, it's interesting to find out what Phillip made of both Princess Cruises, and cruising in general. First-time cruisers are often unsure of what to expect, and perhaps have some misconceptions about things like food, the embarkation and disembarkation process, and atmosphere onboard. After cruising with Princess, Phillip commented on just how easy it was to board the ship, how opulant Royal Princess itself is, and about how easy and convenient it was to see so many different destinations whilst being accomodated in just one place. Find out more about his trip in this interesting Q&A video:

The cruise included an excursion in Barcelona, during which a local guide showed them all around some of the lesser-known areas. This meant that Phillip and his wife could see and explore places they were not aware of, in a city they thought they were familiar with.

The cruise made another stop in Marseille, where they had a tour of a vineyard, and of course, took part in some wine-tasting. As a real wine and food enthusiast, Phillip was hugely impressed with some of the treats that were available onboard. He was given a tour of the galley, and took part in food-tasting with the Executive Chef, and enjoyed a personal wine session during which he could blend wine according to his own preference.

Since this fantastic first cruise, Phillip and his family have been treated to another fabulous adventure onboard Regal Princess, this time to the beautiful Baltics. Watch as they explore the sights of Oslo, and make use of the fabulous range of facilities onboard the ship during their sea day.

Finding out all about what a cruise with Princess Cruises can entail has been a real educational journey for Phillip, who has become a firm fan of cruising. With a travel-bucket list that includes the likes of the Fjords, Canada, Alaska, and South America, it is likely that he will enjoy everything that Princess Cruises has to offer again and again while journeying to these fantastic destinations.

Spa treatments have long been well received gifts for Mother’s Day, giving mum the opportunity to relax completely, put her feet up and enjoy some quality ‘me’ time. If you know that a spa treatment or even an indulgent day-trip to the spa is guaranteed to make her smile, make sure she gets her gift even if away on holiday. Most cruise lines feature excellent spa facilities; Princess Cruises boast one of the best spas at sea with an attractive range of treatments on offer and Celebrity Cruises host the award winning Canyon Ranch SpaClub. If you already have a cruise to look forward to, our Concierge Team can help you pre-book and save money.

Wine and dine with speciality venues

Make Mother’s Day dinner extra-special and reserve a table in one of many speciality restaurants at sea. Cruise and cuisine go hand in hand with many cruise lines collaborating with culinary experts, celebrity chefs, and leading restaurateurs. Treat your mum to an afternoon tea like no other onboard Britannia, delicately designed by Master Patissier Eric Lanlard. Savour the authentic Italian flavours with Princess Cruises Sabatini’s, or enjoy the expertise of Nobu-trained chef’s in Crystal Cruises Silk Road and The Sushi Bar.

Something completely different

Destination rich itineraries give cruisers the opportunity to experience new cultures and local life in an array of exciting ports of call. Cruise lines are answering the demand for shore excursions with programmes for Destination ImmersionR (Azamara) and exclusive experiences (Celebrity ExclusivesSM). Make mum’s cruise even more memorable by booking a unique shore excursion like Celebrity Cruises Slovenian Truffle Hunt, or a Caribbean rail and sail trip.

What our customers say

"I booked a Fred Olsen cruise with IGLU last month and was so impressed by the service I received. The staff member I spoke to was Kimberley and she was exemplary. Capable, kind, professional, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. She went through every step of the way calmly and thoroughly. IGLU were recommended to me by friends and I have no hesitation in passing the recommendation along. Well done IGLU and thank you. "

Christina
(March 2019)

"So easy to deal with, I studied the Cruise I wanted, did my research with different company's and returned to Iglu. I had three quotes matching Iglu’s cost, but with one phone call they beat the price themselves by £40 without me even asking, how easy was that! "
