Monaco Facts

It’s as glitzy as it is old, with the Principality ruled by the Grimaldi family for over 700 years.

Who were the Grimaldis? A famous family from the area who took over Monaco from the Genovese occupiers. In 1297 Francesco Grimaldi and his men captured the fortress dressed as Franciscan monks. The disguise allowed them access to the castle. Once inside they opened the gates allowing their soldiers in.

How well does Monaco get on with neighbours today? Very well, Monaco has full membership to the UN and is affiliated to the EU. The present day ruler Albert of Monaco works hard ensuring the country isn’t just known as a tax haven, but a country with a transparent fiscal system promoting banking and high tech industries.

Why is it so well-known? For starters Monaco residents are about the world’s wealthiest enjoying record years of longevity, a pleasant climate and paying zero taxes. Security is one of Monaco’s USP’s with the world’s highest number of policemen per capita. The facilities and amenities make it a welcoming playground for the rich and every May they host the Grand Prix.

What do drivers think of that? It’s the race they all want to win, if you bag this one whether the Grand Prix or support race, it puts rockets on your street cred. They have to earn it though, it’s tight and twisty, drivers say it’s like riding a bike in your living room, others say it’s like flying a plane in an auditorium.

Monaco is a stunning destination packed with glitz, glamour, culture and history. Visit as part of your Mediterranean cruise or attend during the world famous grand prix to absorb the exciting atmosphere.

See our Monaco F1 cruise guide for more information on cruise lines and ships that offer a Monaco Grand Prix Cruise package.

Harmony of the Seas launched May 2016 bringing with her a floating fantasy land of excitement.

The Abyss slide towers 150 feet above sea level spanning an impressive 10 decks and shooting guests at a rate of 9 miles per hour. Beats queuing for the lift any day.

6 ways to be romantic on your cruise holiday

10th February 2016

Updated February 2018

Cruising and romance go hand in hand, as this style of holiday provides plenty of opportunities to share a romantic moment with your loved one. Whether your definition of romance is watching the sunset together with a cocktail, or partying all night long, cruising has something to satisfy every desire.

There are many ways to show your romantic side on a cruise, check out some of our favourites below.

Movies Under the Stars

What could be more romantic than a night watching a movie under the stars on a padded double lounger, snuggled under a blanket and popcorn in hand? Find Movies Under the Stars onboard with Princess Cruises and similar outdoor movie experiences on other major cruise lines.

Couples massage

Completely switching off together is something that rarely occurs until you experience a couples massage. Set in a private room, you can enjoy up to an hour of absolute peace, deep body replenishment, and the sweet aroma of massage oil, all with the knowledge that your partner is enjoying the same thing. Couples massages are available in many spas on different cruise lines. Purchase a couples wellness package from MSC Cruises or try the Lotus Spa with Princess.

Sunset cocktails

As the evening approaches, take yourself to a spot on the outer decks and enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the amazing sunset over the surrounding ocean. For an even more romantic touch, some ships allow you to walk out onto the helipad.

Dance the night away

Whether you have never stepped foot on a dance floor or you are the new Danny and Sandy, let go and see how much fun you have. This may not sound like everyone’s idea of romance but you’ll be surprised at how good you feel at letting go. Check out Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, or Carnival to get in the groove.

Top Deck Picnic

Make your way to the top deck of Celebrity Cruises Solstice Class ships and you’ll find yourself at the lawn club. A lawn of real grass designed exclusively with relaxation and comfort in mind. Take place in lawn games or hire a picnic basket for a romantic top deck picnic for two. Many other cruise ships boast a similar space where you can relax and enjoy a gentle stroll or simply chill out on a lounger.

Explore together

They say there is no love without adventure, so going away to experience new destinations, different cultures, unique cuisine, and daring explorations is the ultimate recipe for romance. Travelling to every corner of the globe, a cruise will surely open the door to new adventures - and who better to share this with than your loved one. Azamara Club Cruises have some truly Azamazing evenings and are perfect for destination immersion and experiences.

Of course, not every guest is onboard with a partner, and solo cruisers can rest assured that there are plenty of things to do and ways to treat yourself as well. Take a look at these great ideas for single 'me time' and sociable solo cruising too!

Keen cyclers can combine their hobby with a European River Cruise, with AmaWaterways. Among their extensive list of possible onboard activities and excursions, ships are equipped with a fleet of bicycles available for guests to use – either as part of a guided group tour, or even to explore new cities by themselves. Biking along the Danube is a particular favourite due to the picturesque scenery and predominantly flat, wide cycle path.

Hiking on your Holiday

In addition to the walking city tours provided on many cruise holidays, there are some trips during which passengers can push themselves on a more adventurous ramble. Depending on the destination and type of cruise you are taking, independent hiking is often possible. Alternatively, for those who would prefer there are a number of holidays which include guided hikes. Why not discover ancient Polynesian sculptures on a hike across Malden Island, or take on a trek in the Flam Valley in Norway.

Sports Onboard

When you’ve exhausted all options and think you’ve seen and done it all in the sporting event cruise world, choose a cruise that brings the sport to you. With bigger ships being built each year, onboard activities have never been better. Sports fans, adrenaline junkies and the like can enjoy surf simulators, sky diving (on a ship), adventurous ropes courses, aqua parks, state of the art gymnasiums, basketball courts and more. Check out Royal Caribbean for high energy and test your mettle with Norwegian Cruise Line’s extensive ropes course.

Many cruise ships now also feature large TV's screening re-runs or even live sports events in their traditional style pubs or bars. Check out O'Sheehan's onboard Norewgian Escape or P&O Cruises with their dedicated sports channel.

What our customers say

"I booked a Fred Olsen cruise with IGLU last month and was so impressed by the service I received. The staff member I spoke to was Kimberley and she was exemplary. Capable, kind, professional, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. She went through every step of the way calmly and thoroughly. IGLU were recommended to me by friends and I have no hesitation in passing the recommendation along. Well done IGLU and thank you. "

Christina
(March 2019)

"So easy to deal with, I studied the Cruise I wanted, did my research with different company's and returned to Iglu. I had three quotes matching Iglu’s cost, but with one phone call they beat the price themselves by £40 without me even asking, how easy was that! "

Gary
