April 2018 Iglu Cruise Holiday Show

26th April 2018

Held at the prestigious Kempton Park Racecourse, we were back for the first time in 2018 to host the biannual Iglu Cruise Holiday Show.

With the sun shining all day we could not have asked for better conditions for our first holiday show of the year. Doors opened at 9:30am, when we were greeted with an abundance of guests who couldn’t wait to get in and start planning their next holiday. A complimentary drink was waiting for every guest on arrival to start the show off right.

Having partnered up with over 20 of our ocean cruise, river cruise, and tourist board representatives, we had plenty of help on hand to provide all the information and guidance needed to help give guests the inspiration they needed to sail off on their next voyage. We had six talk forums throughout the day, including the Do’s and Don’ts of First Time Cruising, Savour the World with the Finest Cuisine at Sea with Oceania Cruises, and we were overwhelmed with the amount of people in attendance to see the River Vs Ocean Cruising presentation.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was being joined by author and TV presenter Julie Peasgood, who was there to meet and greet guests. She also gave an incredibly insightful talk on ‘Why Choose Cruise’.

We were delighted to be able to inspire so many guests throughout the day, and we hope all questions were answered. The lucky winner of our 3 night Greek Isles cruise is Brian from Colchester, congratulations!

Thank you to all who were in attendance on the day, it was great meeting you and we can’t wait to see you at our next show.

Best Winter Destinations for Christmas and New Year

4th December 2017

Updated September 2018

Have a Christmas or New Year celebration like no other this year, by visiting a new and exciting destination on a cruise. The world is full of incredible places at every corner, and many of these play host to some wonderful parties and Christmas festivities throughout December and January. Here are our top 5 spots, that we recommend everyone see at this time of year - at least once in their life.

New York

For many people, New York at winter is the epitome of Christmas spirit. This is in no small part thanks to movie classics like Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life, in which New York is the setting for warm Christmas tales. Whether you cruise to New York in the run-up to Christmas or are there for New Year’s Eve, the glittering city that never sleeps will undoubtedly provide you with everything you need to feel like celebrating. From the buzzing atmosphere and lights in Time Square to a frosty, romantic moonlit carriage ride in Central Park, New York offers some truly special experiences.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a fantastic destination for those who want a change of scenery, but don’t want to travel too far. Close to the UK, there are a number of options for a no-fly cruise here. In the winter months, the city comes to life with music, lights, and decorations, and the friendly residents will welcome you with open arms. See the stunning Amsterdam Light Festival, at which global artists put together some beautiful displays through the streets and canals. There are of course Christmas markets as well, and some fabulous parties and fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Paris

The famous City of Lights is, of course, a hub of illumination and bustling activity at this time of year, boasting some stunning views and wonderful options when it comes to festive things to do. Revel in Christmas spirit at the Christmas Market on Avenue des Champs-Elysees, where you can also take a spin on the ice rink. If you have time, a visit to Disneyland is an absolute must. Whether you’re 6 or 66, a bit of Disney magic at Christmas is a great recipe to get you feeling merry and bright. Start planning your trip and ask us about our cruises to Paris.

Norway

Visit the land of Frozen and get lost in a real Winter Wonderland. A cruise in Norway is a great option for this time of year, particularly because of the chance to see the Northern Lights. December and January often have a high number of clear nights, meaning the vibrant lights are more likely to be visible. The sparkling scenery and welcoming ambience in this part of the world is perfect for celebrating during the festive season, simply gazing at the stars with a hot chocolate, sat on the top deck of your cruise ship is truly the stuff of dreams. Find out more about our great range of Norway cruises.

Sydney

The New Year’s Eve firework display at Sydney Harbour is a well-known event that causes visitors to flock to the city every year. Sydney is a port of call on many world cruises, and if you are lucky enough to be here at the right time, you can have one of the best views of the show available. The famous Sydney Opera House also holds glamourous New Year’s Eve celebrations, giving you the opportunity to get dressed up and enjoy a bit of luxury during your holiday. See the New Year in with style on an Australasia cruise.

Whether you are considering a cruise during the main events, or are merely seeking a few days away before or after, you can rest assured that there are plenty of options out there. Take a look at all our December and January cruises, and book your next adventure today.

Incredible Music Themed Cruises

14th November 2017

Updated August 2018

Themed cruises are hugely popular, and different styles of music are often featured onboard. To be a part of one of these cruises can be a fabulous experience, as you can let loose and enjoy the music you like with other holidaymakers of the same mind. You will no doubt create all kinds of great memories, and make life-long friends.

Different cruise lines will offer various itineraries and themes, so be sure to ask what's available at the time of booking if you'd like to join a specific cruise.

Types of Music Themed Cruises

Music Eras

Cruisers of different generations will of course get excited about the music of their youth, whether this is 60s, 70s, 80s, or even 90s music. Don your bell-bottoms, jumpsuits, leather jackets, or shoulder-padded blazers and really embrace the styles and spirit of these bygone years. Enjoy the sounds of the sixties with Motown nights, groove to 70s music with an Abba tribute act, or dance the night away on Royal Caribbean’s thrilling Back to the 80s cruise. This particular cruise features some classic acts from the era, including former member of Spandau Ballet - Tony Hadley, ABC, Kim Wilde, Belinda Carlisle, and Paul Young to name a few.

Specific Music Genres

Rather than a particular period of music, you might favour a certain genre. Take in beautiful jazz music on a blues-themed cruise, heel-toe and dosey-doe with fellow country music lovers, or be mesmerised by the incredible sounds of some world-renowned classical music artists, onboard Celebrity Cruises’ stunning Bravo cruise. This outstanding opportunity is perfect for lovers of classical music; over 20 acts will perform, including the eminent Alfie Bow and Katherine Jenkins, with the National Symphony Orchestra accompanying.

What to Pack for a Music Cruise

Whether it’s your dancing shoes, sequined trousers or comfortably chic attire, be sure to think about your evenings onboard when packing for your cruise. Some music themed cruises even encourage genre themed fancy dress to get the party started onboard. Check with your cruise line for more information and guidance about what to pack.

Best Firework Displays to See on a Cruise

27th October 2017

Fireworks are seen all over the world to celebrate anything from great communal occasions like New Year, to smaller, personal events such as birthdays and weddings. They are also widely used to mark historic anniversaries in a number of different countries. We take a look at some of the best firework displays across the globe which can be seen during a cruise!

Bastille Day, Paris

An important public holiday in France, Bastille Day – on July 14th – commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. On this day, The Storming of The Bastille took place – when rebels attacked the state prison. It is seen as a pivotal event in the revolutionary process, and as such is celebrated each year with great gusto all over the country. The main event however, is largely considered to be the magnificent fireworks display which lights up the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Consider a cruise to France next July and be a part of this fantastic event.

Independence Day, New York

Another well-known occasion, during which fireworks dominate the sky, is the United States’ Independence Day - colloquially known as the Fourth of July. On this day in 1776, The Continental Congress decided upon the precise and final wording of the Declaration of Independence; and therefore the end of British control over the 13 colonies. Again, this date has become widely accepted as the birth of the USA, which is recognised and celebrated all over the country. Towns in every state put on firework displays on all different scales, but Macy’s in New York are renowned for their show in particular. Sit back on the deck of a ship on a cruise to New York and enjoy the spectacle of lights overhead.

Festa del Redentore, Venice

On the third weekend of July, Venetians celebrate the end of a terrible, epidemic plague which occurred in 1575 until 1577. The disaster was declared over on July 13th, an announcement that has been celebrated every year since. Festa del Redentore translates to the Feast of the Redeemer, a name which was chosen because of the Church of the Redeemer that was erected in hopes of saving the city from the plague. The Saturday night of the weekend sees all manner of people out and about, with a special focus on the grand finale of the evening – a majestic firework show which can last up to an hour. Take a cruise to Venice to witness this remarkable night.

Guy Fawkes Night, London

Of course the firework-focussed event we are all most familiar with is our own; the commemoration of Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up parliament on 5th November in 1605. The population of London actually began to recognise and celebrate this day in the very same year, by lighting bonfires to show support of their King who had been saved. Every year since, towns all over Britain acknowledge this historic night by burning the ‘guy’ on bonfires and putting on fireworks displays. There are some spectacular shows all over, however it is often thought that the best place to see them is in the location of the original event: London. Take a cruise from the UK to see some amazing fireworks at this time of year.

Cruise lines sometimes host their own celebrations, where fireworks are the main event, for example for special anniversaries. For example, back in 2015 Cunard put on a stunning show to commemorate their 175th anniversary:

In addition to these beautiful events, fireworks are seen in many other areas of the world. Why not consider seeing a display in Asia, where fireworks were created in the first place? Take a look at some of the most fantastic opportunities to see displays in Asia, with the best places to see in Chinese New Year, and even the magnificent fireworks festivals in Japan.

The Best of the Autumn 2017 Iglu Cruise Show

12th October 2017

Due to ever-increasing demand for our Iglu Cruise Holiday Show, we recently held our second and final show of the year at the beautiful Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Guests were greeted with spectacular views over the venue, where the sun was shining and our staff were smiling. With faultless transport links, complimentary parking, and welcome drinks on hand throughout the day, the atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful. Hundreds of cruise fans turned out to be a part of the event, to discuss their future cruising needs, and gain valuable advice from our experts.

An impressive array of cruise line representatives, travel agents, and other specialists were on hand to offer information and guidance, and to inspire cruisers with all possible cruising options. With six live talks taking place throughout the day, guests could find answers to all their holiday questions with ease.

A real highlight of the day was BBC presenter Nicholas Owen’s talk about his life experiences, and love for cruising with Cunard. With Cunard in attendance, guests were privy to an authentic and thorough insight into life onboard their ships. Other talks included ‘Why River Cruising Could be for You’, which explained the exciting versatility of cruising the world’s rivers, and ‘Handcrafted Cruise Holidays’, during which our very own experts detailed the possibilities of a tailor made cruise.

As well as making the most of the opportunity to learn more about all things cruise, guests also had the chance of winning a Luxury Hamper, courtesy of Holland America Line. We would like to thank all entrees, and are delighted to congratulate our winner - Jerry from Bognor Regis!

We at Iglu Cruise thoroughly enjoyed our day with all of those who attended, and can’t wait to see you at our 2018 shows, which are set to be even better!

What our customers say

"I booked a Fred Olsen cruise with IGLU last month and was so impressed by the service I received. The staff member I spoke to was Kimberley and she was exemplary. Capable, kind, professional, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. She went through every step of the way calmly and thoroughly. IGLU were recommended to me by friends and I have no hesitation in passing the recommendation along. Well done IGLU and thank you. "

"So easy to deal with, I studied the Cruise I wanted, did my research with different company's and returned to Iglu. I had three quotes matching Iglu’s cost, but with one phone call they beat the price themselves by £40 without me even asking, how easy was that! "
